====================================================== MPC Gram ======================================================= Series 001 Number 74 July 27, 2000 News and Views Happy birthday Wiz, I missed it by a few days, but I finally remembered. Have a great one! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Some new names were discussed for the gram on chat Thur night. Brad P. suggested The Bullet and Incoming. MPC Kid suggested Mail Call but thought that the suffix gram was good even if a different root is adopted. Additional discussions centered around how many military money collectors there are and what is the difference between a collector and a numismatist. Dave S. is working on an article to address the matter of how many fellow collectors we have. It will appear here soon. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// The Thursday USA Today had an article about Swiss payments to be made to Holocaust victims. According to the article, Swiss banks are going to pay $1.25 billion dollars compensation to holocaust survivors in addition to the $4.8 billion being paid by the German government. In my opinion, documents relating to claims and payments are WWII numismatic items. Perhaps the best would be an actual check (from the banks or the government). Of course, the checks are likely to be so large than no one would want to keep one, but perhaps someday the cancelled checks will find their way back into collectors' hands. Of course, a photograph of one of the checks would also be good. I was particularly pleased to add the section on neutral nations to World War II Remembered. This was a concept that had not been explored in the past. Of course the classic neutral nation is Switzerland and there were a few important items to list for Switzerland. Now we have another. It relates to the compensation issue above. Throughout the war, various Swiss banks held assets for people from many nations. At the end of the war, when assets could be distributed, there was concern that that banks not aid war criminals and the like so some controls were instituted. These controls are little known nor understood. Few numismatic artifacts have been found relating to this situation, but there is at least one. Some stock certificates have been found that were held by Swiss banks throughout the war. The backs of the certificates are stamped indicating that dividends were paid throughout the war. That is interesting, but hardly significant. The interesting part is the certificate attached to the stock certificate. The text is as follows: Swiss compensation office Zurich [serial number] CERTIFICATE The Swiss Compensation Office, acting upon instructions of the Swiss Government certifies that no national of Germany or Japan as defined in paragraph 6 of the letter of November 22, 1946, from the Secretary of the Treasury to Federal Councillor Detitpierre, has or has had an interest in the following securities since the respective dates on which the Swiss freezing regulations were extended to Germany and Japan. [identification of the security] [date stamp and signature, illegible (unfortunately)] I think that these certificates are important and interesting items. Of course they raise lots of questions that we never even thought of before! Wow, what a great hobby we have! Of course these certificates will be listed in the next WWII Remembered. Your thoughts on the above are certainly welcome. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Wiz is working on a new chat program. Hope your return from paradise isn't too traumatic. rusty Dear Rusty, Paradise is a junk box, a long forgotten envelope of notes, a new variety, or a new serial number for the replacement survey! Yes, there certainly is interest in "reverse" numbers. I should have mentioned this in the ladder discussion, but as you say, there are no real reverse MPC ladders but even 00654321 would be a nice find. One of my own favorites in this area is the idea of finding the very LAST number for a note, the inverse of serial number one. This is MUCH harder to find. There was little motivation at the time of issue to save this note (compared to the number 1) and it is not recognizable to collectors without a book. Phil Goldstein has started a survey to find the highest reported SN for each issue of MPC. I think that this is important research, first because it might help us find some discrepancies or give us some insight to number of notes ISSUED as opposed to printed. The other thing is that it may help us find a last note. Editor How about Mil-Gram? Covers all military, MPC and everything in between. Or Mil-Mail? Nah! I like Mil-Gram better but you will most likely come up with something better. Neil S. Dear Mr. S., Perhaps mil E gram, or mil-graEm? More thoughts and ideas are still needed. Thanks for writing. This year the convention will be in Philadelphia. 25 years ago the ANA convention was one of the major events for paper money. Hey Fred,

If we didn't have to come back from paradise sometime, we'd never know
there was something to look forward to.

The MPC Gram name sounds just fine. It is readily identifiable and
nice & short.

Question/comment. there any reverse order collecting going on - like
76543210? Now, I realize that some of the numbers are too high for feasibility.
