====================================================== MPC Gram ======================================================= Series 001 Number 71 Aug 1, 2000 News and Views Was just looking at the 1961 [approximately, it is not dated] supplement to Military Currency W. W. II by Alfred Swails. The Swails book (pamphlet) was the first stand alone publication on military money. Swails published this supplement shortly after the basic item was published. I think that we might have looked at this before, but it is always fun to do. When the supplement was published, MPC Series 591 had just been released and was added to the listings. The Swails evaluation of some of the earliers series are very interesting. He evaluated the Series 541 $5 at $7.50 in unc! Yes, you read that right, $7.50. Perhaps even more interesting, he also remarks that it is rare! This sort of relates to some of my comments about the 691/701 fancy numbers etc. At and near the time of "release" many items do not get much "respect." Normally, but not always, time "fixes" this situation. I am sure that it would not have been easy to find a CU 541 $5 after Series 591 had been issued. Freeman Craig imported three of these. Their history has been documented in the BNR, but I need to recreate that for inclucion here and in the next MPC book. Yes, there were three consecutive 541 5s in the Craig collection. He sold one to Ruth Hill in 61 or 62. He then sold the other "duplicate" to me in about 1974. Hey guys, where are your reports of Series letters for Konversionskasse notes? The next major show is the American Numismatic Association Convention (August 9-13). This year the convention will be in Philadelphia. 25 years ago the ANA convention was one of the major events for paper money. Now with the development of so many successful paper money shows (and of course the MPC Fest), its importance has diminished, but it is still an important show. Because it is such a big and important show, you cannot help but find some good paper there. Marv Mericle's great MPC collection will NOT be on display as promissed because of family and administration problems. We are certainly sorry to hear about that, but hope that all goes well with Marv and that we will see the exhibit again soon.
