====================================================== MPC Gram ======================================================= Series 001 Number 84 Aug 11, 2000 News and Views Activity at ANA conventions intensifies on Friday and Saturday. Much of it is not directly related to finding and aquiring, but it is still a very busy time. Crowds might be down a little today from yesterday (big crowd, reportedly approaching 10K), but will pick up again on Saturday. Bill Y from Pa was at the show Tursday. He is a great new MPC collector (but veteran numismatist in spite of his young years). He turned a lot of rocks looking for notes and added some pieces to his collection. Took home a lot of reading material too. His coin club has arranged a bus to come to the show on Saturday, but he could not wait. He and his girlfriend had the day off on Thursday (probably not by chance) so he drove the 2.5 hours to the show. In his own words, he "could not wait." Now do not get me wrong, they are both coming back on the bus. Well, let me clarrify that. I am CERTAIN that he is coming back and she has a spot resreved. She is an unmarried MPC widow! Wed a fellow holding a bundle of 100 681 50c notes stopped at my table and asked where he could find David Seelye. I saw the notes and volunteered that I would be happy to help him (take the burned off him), but he said that he had allready made the deal with David. Ouch. I was jealous, but happy for Dave. Turns out that it is a bundle of 99 only, but it did have the band. The next major show is the American Numismatic Association Convention (August 9-13). This year the convention will be in Philadelphia. 25 years ago the ANA convention was one of the major events for paper money. Now with the development of so many successful paper money shows (and of course the MPC Fest), its importance has diminished, but it is still an important show. Because it is such a big and important show, you cannot help but find some good paper there. Marv Mericle's great MPC collection will NOT be on display as promissed because of family and administration problems. We are certainly sorry to hear about that, but hope that all goes well with Marv and that we will see the exhibit again soon.
