Hello MPC fans, The distribution of the 691/701 certificates raises a few cataloging questions. Currently they are in the MPC book after series 692. They are sort of an afterthought. It was nice to have them at all and it did not make much difference because basically they were not available. Now that collectors will have them, I wonder if they belong there (where they are) or should be integrated in numerical order. Of course, there is a good argument to just leave them where they are. The best argument is that if it "ain't broke, don't fix it." So, I guess the real question is "Is it broke?" Well, if the reason is that they are at the end because they are unissued, well, they are still that. However, if that is the argument, they should have gone after the coupons because they were issued. If they come after 692 because chronological instead of numerical order is used there is another problem. Series 661 was issued before 651 yet we list them in numerical order. I can remember pondering this weighty question in the 1970s. I guess that I hoped that I would have to fret about the problem again for a reason like this one. I figured that there was no perfect solution. At that time it seemed to me that the overriding consideration was making the series easy to find in the book for collectors (and others) who were not specialists. I am inclined toward reordering the listings and putting them in series order, but I certainly look forward to your thoughts and ideas on this. Of course I always look forward to your thoughts and ideas! Have a great one!
