======================================================= MPC Gram ====================================================== Vol 1 Number 44 June 12, 2000 News and Views Wow, what a weekend I had! As you know I visited Mrs. Kesselman. I was able to arrange to buy the balance of Alex's collection. It includes a wide range of wonderful material. I will have some of it at Memphis but I expect to sell most of it here in the gram and on ebay. Stay tuned to both. We can also use it as a vehicle to discuss many other issues. After visiting with Mrs. Kesselman, I visited Doug (Wiz) Bell. Boy what a great trip. Of course you already know that the Wiz is a great collector, so we just had a great time. He and his bride greeted me while sporting MPC Fest tee shirts! Made me wish that I had mine! We studied Doug and Alex's collection as well as told lots of lies. For the first time I got to see the now-famous 691 and 701 MPC. I certainly have some comments only some of which I will share now. First, I am not sure that I have adequately described how exciting I think that all of this is. By the time that I have made it to the keyboard, I have possbily gotten too analytical and not expressed the emotions. THIS IS GREAT STUFF. THIS IS A GREAT TIME FOR MPC COLLECTING. THIS IS FUN. THIS IS EXCITING. I LOVE it!!! The release of these sets is a dream come true. Most of us have dreamed about this for a long time! I have no idea how it will all work out, but it is wonderful. Now back to earth. As Marcus mentions in his BNR article, it is possible to differentiate between the first and second prinitng for series 691 by inspection. However, I am not as confident as he seems that this is a perfectly reliable system. The notes DO look different, but there are many factors. The most obvious is that one prinitng was manufactured in 1970, the other in 1984. Obviously one has aged more than the other, but that is not likely to be the answer. Probably different printing presses were used in 1984 than 1970. This could make a difference. There is always the possibility of differences throughout the course of manufacturing. We know that there were differences throughout the manufacturing of Series 681 $20s so similar situations could have developed here. Without having samples spread throughout both prinitngs, we probably will not be able to rule this out. However, there is still something else. Doug and Marcus had reported from the beginning the amazing way that the serial numbers react under ultraviolet light for the 691 and 701. Well, Doug and I studied this. It is even better than indicated. Yes, there is a significant reaction around the serial numbers under UV. It is almost as though a serial number window had been created with some special UV ink. However, under incandescent and sunlight, I could not find any evidence of such a printed window. Then we discovered that this phenonemna is only on the second printing notes! It is not found on the first prinintgs! I think that this is an important observation. I believe that this was an enhanced security feature about which we have more to learn. It also proves that there were some "deliberate" differences in the manufacturing of the two printings so it should not be surprising that there are apparant differences. Wow. I certainly look forward to more study on my own and especially by you and other collectors as the sets get spread around. There is no telling what we might learn--or at least observe! ======================================================= Letters We need your letters for publication in this section.
