======================================================= MPC Gram ====================================================== Vol 1 Number 45 June 13, 2000 News and Views Preliminary news in from Long Beach is that 691 and 701s were there and a big hit. Some of the information is conflicting about the sets that were there. We need a report from someone who was there. I will ask Ed B. to give us a report. [Aside to Ed B, can you PLEASE give us a report on MPC at Long Beach? Thanks.] Chat was very interesting last night. We had some first time chatters as well as many of the old timers so that was good. Also had some good content. Some of the discussion was about the designs of the 691/701s and which were liked the best. My own favorite and that of many is the 701 $10. It is certainly a beauty, but so are the others. Some copies of MPC Series 692 are being sold on ebay as counterfeits. I have not looked at these, but it brings up the subject of counterfeits. It seems that the pieces being offerred are probably very modern computer products. As such they are worthless, but there are lots of intersting points to consider. Contemporary counterfiets made to bilk servicemen etc during the time of issue. These are as opposed to counterfeits made to bilk collectors. I guess that a third category is fantasies like these that are simple copies [probably] not intended to bilk anyone. The quality of these is so poor that they could not fool any experienced collector. However, the line between collector counterfiets and modern fantasies is getting closer because of current technology. Contemporary conterfiets are justifiably of interest to collectors. Indeed, they are an unofficial part of the MPC system. I like them and have some in my collection. However, as with many things, the quesstion comes down to "what is it worth?" I have a somewhat controversial opinion on this. I believe that even the best conemporary counterfeits can only be worth a small price. These days that might be as much as $30. There is danger in paying more. If counterfiets are worth say $100, then we are encouraging someone to create counterfeits and sell them as counterfeits. Few laws would be broken in this case. Sure this might be a violation of the Hobby Protection Act, but getting enforcement using that would be difficult at best.
