======================================================= MPC Gram ====================================================== Vol 1 Number 63 July 11, 2000 News and Views A collector named Rusy sent the following letter to Phil G. with a copy to the gram. It includes lots of interesting stuff we we are sharing it here. Since he sent this letter he has sent a few more so it looks like Rusty may become a regular gram correspondent. [Rusty, PLEASE do not quit your day job.] I have a Series 681 .25-cent, sheet pos. no. 80 with SN; C 08701946C, in ch cu condition. I received it direct from our unit paymaster on "C-day" and put it away immediately (as I did with most of three sets--except for some stupid reason I did not keep 5's, 10's or 20's -- it was not 'cause I needed the money; I was a collector then). I think it was because the bulk of my pay went as an allotment to my wife, the rest went direct to a bank account drawing 10% interest (remember those) and I got about $50 in cash to run my life for the month. Actually that was more than I needed. So, I received a few big bills which were spent, not saved. Oh well! Thank you for a very complete web site. It has helped fill in some information gaps. Rusty's experiences are not much different from many others, mine included. I was in Vietnam for Series 692 and did not bring back a piece although I was a numismatist. Subscribed to Coin World throughout the time that I was there. I have lots more stories on this that I will share as time goes on. We would love to have your stories too. ======================================================== Letters Dear Gram, Mr. 880's counterfeits were not very good, though I would have liked to see one printed from the plate that was brought (a 1928B plate--the note that came was a 1935x). The agent said that 880 had more than one plate. Joe ======================================================== Calendar In this section we will highlight MPC chat, MPC Fest, and MPC gram events. Other events will be mentioned as they get close. For planning purposes see the papermoneyworld.com calendar of events. The next major show is the American Numismatic Association Convention (August 9-13). This year the convention will be in Philadelphia. 25 years ago the ANA convention was one of the major events for paper money. Now with the development of so many successful paper money shows (and of course the MPC Fest), its importance has diminished, but it is still an important show. Because it is such a big and important show, you cannot help but find some good paper there. Marv Mericle's great MPC collection will NOT be on display as promissed because of family and administration problems. We are certainly sorry to hear about that, but hope that all goes well with Marv and that we will see the exhibit again soon. I will be there the entire time and will be pleased to chat MPC with you! Chat was not operating Sunday night. I do not know what the problem was, but it should be "fixed" for Monday night. ==================================================== Trading post Your classified advertisement for items for sale will be run here for free.
