=========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1001 Tuesday September 2, 2003 A milestone (Not more kiloGram) by Joe Boling Last week I completed the first series in my quest to collect the MPC basic 90-note set in position 8. For quite a while I have had only one note missing from each of six series, and also one note missing from two denomination sets. This piece was not on an intersection, a note that would fill both a series and a denomination, but at least now I have one row filled. A 611 quarter did the trick. Who'd 'ave thunk that 611 would be the first series filled? I was expecting to fill series 481 or 641 first, both of which I used, once upon a decade. I was at Bill Henderson's place, looking for notes to use as stage props in a play set in 19th century Germany, and was going through his junk boxes. This VG note was in his $5 box (that's right - junk boxes aren't what they used to be). I now have 67 of the ninety basic notes (fortunately, no position 8 in the 651 fractionals is known to me). The toughest series for me has been 661 (another series I used), with four notes missing. The toughest denominations have been 25c (a surprise) and 50c (not a surprise). The cost of the first 67 notes has been $5449.03 (almost half of that, $2505.50, was for one note - the 541 $5 in VF+). I am now looking for the following to complete my position 8 set: 461 $10; 471 5c, 25c, 50c; 472 50c; 481 50c (no preference as to printing, for any series); 521 $5; 541 50c, $1, $10; 591 10c, $1; 641 25c; 651 $5, $10; 661 25c, 50c, $10, $20; 681 25c, $20; 692 25c, $10. I have a token replacement, and an example of an evidence note. All I need in the way of special pieces is a counterfeit in position 8. If a reader has a position 8 that I need, I offer to replace it with an equivalent piece from one of the several dealers who support our obsession. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I guess that I must have gotten a little smug with kiloGram, because right after publishing that, Gram plans started to fall apart. This Gram was mostly prepared last Friday to be published on Saturday morning before I went out of town on a social event. I figured that I would miss Sunday, but put out a Monday Gram when I got home late on Monday. So here we are on Tuesday sending out what should have been the Saturday Gram. Computer time was the biggest problem, but other factors got in the way too. The worst part of all is that Joe Bolings column for last Tuesday was delayed till Saturday because of the kiloGram brouhaha then until today. That means that Joe feels (I assume) that he can skip his column for this week. Drat. I am working hard on solving the wi-fi nut so that the Gram can be delivered from most anywhere. Are there any wi-fi expert Gramsters? If so please hold my hand! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, After Joe Boling graciously got me going on the MPCGrams, I thought it time that I contribute once instead of just reading and digesting all the interesting info that each gram brings. In 1949, my wife and I landed in Yokohama, Japan to begin what would be 40 years of missionary work in the Tokyo-Yokohama-Yokosuka area (with a 9-month stint in Korea giving out Scripture portions to American and Korean soldiers all across the front lines just after the hostilities ceased). (As a further aside, in Scripture distribution at MacArthur's request in Japan in the 50s, I worked side by side on one occasion with none other than the converted-to-Christianity Mitsuo Fuchida, leader of the attack on Pearl Harbor - I have a photo as proof) I had just come out of what was then the "Organized Reserve" of the navy. But till 1960 I was inactive, when I got the word, "Get active or get out." So I started meeting with a navy reserve unit in, I think, Tokyo. I also started taking my annual two weeks training duty, and remember getting paid with lots of nice fresh MPC. How I wish I had saved some! I also remembering jumping out of my car to pick up a bill that was blowing around just inside the gate of the Yokosuka Navy Base. It was a $5.00 MPC note. Could it have been the series 591 $5.00? I will never know, because (sigh!) I spent it! But this letter is really about the years of shopping we did at the "OSS (Overseas Supply Store?) on what was then Ginza Street near Y Avenue. As foreigners we were given permission to use FTPC (see WWII Remembered, pgs 326 ff). Many were the books that we bought for our food shopping there, and I can not believe now that of all the books we bought I spent every chit. My recollection is that there were also $25.00 books of the stuff; but I am probably more likely to be wrong than Freditor. Before leaving Japan I recall having learned the value of those chits and books; so I went back to that very building in hopes that they could find me an old chit book buried in the archives. I still wonder today if offering them a 1964 Olympic silver 1000 yen coin might have helped me attain my goal. Oh well, at least I know that a lot of great collector stuff passed through my hands. That is it for now; but maybe more will follow if desired, and if I get around to it. Just call me "Vic" Dear Gram, I read that Fred won the Dallas poker games. Can that be right? Notwithstanding the amazing feats in Ripleys Believe it or Not, this report is not credible. The editor should not be allowed to publish such self serving comments. Please give use the correct results. Most of you know that Fred likes books. A copy of Poker for Kids was seen in his car. I think that better indicates his level of skill, or if the report was correct, the level of the competition. Median collection auctioned by Lyn Knight at Dallas last weekend: 20 yen A series 100, this is the series used as trial MPC. This is a classic VF note (most would call EF, some AU, but I did not check to see what the auction called it). It has a modest stain on the right side. A nice, pleasing note: $150 1 yen B REAPLCEMENT SN H00186518A F-VF, no edge damage, it looks real nice, in demand [sold] 1 yen B AU-CU, A16316923A. There is no justification to include this note in such a listing, EXCEPT that it is from the Medina collection and therefore of interest. $4 1000 AM marks, Soviet printing. This is an average uncirculated example but is particularly desirable for two reasons 1) it is from the Medina collection 2) the first three characters (-31) of the serial number are offset UP in addition to laterally (a diagnostic of the Soviet printings). [sold] 100 AM marks, Soviet printing. A routine unc note, but once again from the Medina collection: [sold]. Contact fred@papermoneyworld.net or fredschwan@yahoo.com WANTED SECTION: Collectors may submit lists of items wanted for their collections for listing here.
