I was in Seattle when we last looked, about 1974-5. Somewhere in there, at one of those monthly Seattle Center coin shows that I mentioned previously, I picked a military yen note with two Canton stamps out of a junk box (SB2011b1). It was (still is) burned along the bottom edge. Some months later, in Portland, I picked up another Canton note with identical burn marks. Makes you wonder that kind of story they have to tell. That same day in Portland I also bought a Central Reserve Bank pale blue 10 yuan note with branch bank overprint (SB1217b). It is a real woofer - probably grades a weak fair (separated in the center and repaired with paper tape). Until 1998 it was the only one I had been able to acquire. At the Tokyo International that year I finally got a second one (different branch character, only slightly better grade). The first one cost me fifty cents; the second one $162.55. One thing about looking for varieties from early in a note's life cycle - you are likely to find then in low grades, because they were the first ones on the street, and being in low grades they are likely to be in junk boxes - thus cheap (and unappreciated). Incidentally, the SB listing was "only [the character] wa known." The second one bears the character ti (or chi). Probably that same day in Portland, but in a different store this time, I bought an Oceania 1 shilling with green blocks. In all other respects the note looks fine - no discoloration, fading, ink color shifts, or anything at all to explain the green (instead of red) blocks. I can't think of any treatment of red ink that will result in forest green. Since then I have seen one more with a similar color shift. Anyone know how to turn red into green? I have to assume that it is a color changeling, not a rare variety. I have a good excuse. Well, sort of. Mark Freehill from Sydney, Australia is here visiting. Mark is an old friend, and paper money legend. We have been chatting, looking, swapping, and otherwise enjoying our hobby. Yesterday we spent the day at Allen’s coin shop in Westerville, Ohio. Today we have some plans and tomorrow too. I hope to write more about his visit (this one and previous too) in the days to come. Possibly, I can get him to make his first direct Gram submission too. Mark is a non internet user, so also a nonGramster. You can be sure that I am trying to fix that. He does however know the Gram. He says that Trver Wilkin and Tony James and some others in Australia keep him somewhat informed. For the many tales that he has shared in the past few days, he now has a challenge coin so you can (should) challenge him when you next see him. He does not quite appreciate the embarrassment (and cost) of failing such a challenge! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, hile there is no smoking gun for German War Bonds (eg., a "Kriegs Bond") It seems to defy logic that every belligerent nation EXCEPT Germany had to resort to bonds to finance the war.  I understand that plunder made up for some of this, but the entire war effort???  Doesn't wash with me...the arguments vary and have been knocked down as they have been presented..."No Low Denomination Bonds...all sold to investors" - I have several 100 RM bonds issued during the war that clearly shoot that one down..."No organized effort to sell "war" bonds" -  clearly  little or no bond drive memorabilia is known to exist from Germany.  I don't know enough to know whether I buy that argument or not. I am unaware of any research which has been done to understand why various bonds were issued. With the sacking of Berlin by the Russians and destruction wrought by allied bombing, perhaps this is not surprising.  "It was all done through direct taxation" - How do we know that?  It would seem that taxing for both the war AND domestic purposes would be really draconian and unsustainable.  My personal believe is that, unlike the US and (I think) Japan, bonds were only part (and perhaps a minor part) of the solution, but they nonetheless played a part. Median collection auctioned by Lyn Knight at Dallas last weekend: 20 yen A series 100, this is the series used as trial MPC. This is a classic VF note (most would call EF, some AU, but I did not check to see what the auction called it). It has a modest stain on the right side. A nice, pleasing note: $150 1 yen B REAPLCEMENT SN H00186518A F-VF, no edge damage, it looks real nice, in demand [sold] 1 yen B AU-CU, A16316923A. There is no justification to include this note in such a listing, EXCEPT that it is from the Medina collection and therefore of interest. $4 1000 AM marks, Soviet printing. This is an average uncirculated example but is particularly desirable for two reasons 1) it is from the Medina collection 2) the first three characters (-31) of the serial number are offset UP in addition to laterally (a diagnostic of the Soviet printings).
