From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1008 Date: Tuesday, September 16, 2003 9:34 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1008 Tuesday September 16, 2003 Theater Anyone? by Joe Boling When Bill M referred to me as an actor, I do not think he realized that I have a one-man show opening this Friday and running seven performances over ten days in the Seattle Fringe Theatre Festival. The theater company that is producing the show has been running email quizzes today offering free tickets to people who can answer their questions - one being, who is the first US president to appear on a silver dollar, with an extra ticket if you can include the year. Only one person has provided the correct response (besides me - I replied as if I were an ordinary reader of the message when it arrived). If any reader is going to be in the area between 19-28 September, email me at joeboling@aol.com and I will provide the performance schedule. My guest room will be available for some days during the run - I already have some reservations for it. This is the same show I did at the ANA summer seminar, spiffed up with additional material based on feedback from viewers there, and with music, and the hat that I bought at the YN auction has been integrated. Remember that visit to Bill Henderson a few weeks ago that resulted in my completing my first series of MPC in a quest for the 90-note set in position #8? Another item I picked up that day is a presumably British parody of a German RM10 note, P180 (22 Jan 1929). Accompanying it was a copy of part of an article describing it, with no citation to show where the article appeared originally. In going through the long list of articles about propaganda notes published by Herb Friedman in the IBNS Journal, I found one cited that seemed to be this note's home. Sure enough, the fragmentary explanation in the note holder is lifted from Herb's article on British-prepared propaganda notes in IBNS Journal 24:3. Unfortunately, he says that we know relatively little about this piece, and it seems we still know only a little about it. One problem with researching items like this is that the IBNS Journal index runs through volume 30; we are now in volume 42. Herb, if you are reading, has any more information about this piece surfaced since your article almost twenty years ago? It is on most interesting paper. It is soft green paper, possibly 24 pound stock or heavier (not quite index card thickness), with a pronounced laid pattern resembling burlap, very coarse. The paper does not feel nearly as rough as the laid pattern (looking like a watermark) suggests, but it does not look or feel like it would hold up at all in circulation. The note lacks a serial number, even in the reproduced bill (it was removed from the photographic source of the image, which appears in dull green on the green paper). It also lacks the underprinted light gray letters that this series had for most of its life. The message on the back is in seven lines of pica type in black, and talks about the 10,000 year Reich having lasted merely ten years. It is a nice addition to my WWII note-based propaganda pieces. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Break a leg, Joe. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Howdy, Freditor! I'm glad to hear you are feeling better. My letter is prompted by tour comments in 'Gram #1007 about the 'skips' in issues. First, you must know that I very much appreciate your efforts and the efforts of all contributors to the 'Gram. This diffusion of knowledge, freely given, is at the core of what makes this such an enjoyable pass-time. However, (isn't there always a "However") we humans have an unfortunate trait. We always want MORE!! I include myself in that statement. Thus, when we get a steady input about our hobby, we grinch and gripe at interruptions. I, for one, am grateful for what I have received so far and do want more. But, I can not see that it would do to 'kill the Golden Goose' by working you to death. I personally would not be offended if the 'Gram was cut back to two or three issues a week. I know many will squawk over that last comment, let'em. Do what is necessary to keep the 'Gram coming, even if the publication schedule has to be changed. Just my 2-cents worth... Jay in Garrison, T P. S. Edit this and/or publish as you see fit... Dear Readers, I am sorry that I complained in the editorial of 1007. Perhaps I was feeling a little sorry for myself. I also was having a little bit of a keyboard cramp and could not think of anything to write about (rare, I know). I am sorry to have to inform you that you are stuck with the Gram. It may change, and will certainly evolve, but it is here to stay. Editor Dear Gram, Per the editor’s request, here is the schedule for Joe Boling’s performances in the Seattle Fringe Theatre Festival is: 9/19 - 9pm 9/20 - 2:30 pm 9/21 - 10:30pm 9/22 - 7pm 9/26 - 6pm 9/27 - 3:30pm 9/28 - 8pm I plan on attending the performance on 9/28. Can we make it a miniFest? Gail Baker Dear Gram, I will be in London on Sat Oct 4th. at the IBNS. Any special place or person to report to with my paybook? Gary (Who has Fours) Hicks Dear Esteeemed Editor, On July 5, I bought an issue of The Washington Times because The Washington Post was sold out at my usual source, so I could solve my daily crossword puzzle addiction. There was an article in it on page E3; "Aussie's efforts honor Death Railway POWs by Denis D. Gray of the Associated Press. Rod Beattie has built the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre to gather together in one place all of the information and names associated with this WWII tragedy. I tried to find an email address and/or website for him and/or his centre but I could not anything. So I started looking around and found "Never Forgotten", The Newsletter of the Taiwan P.O.W. Camps Memorial Society describing Rod's work. Their website is at http://www.powtaiwan.org/sprgsummer01/page8.htm . But they also had a complete address for Rod's museum and an email address as follows; The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre 65/6 Moo Ban Jirakan Kanchanaburi, 71000, Thailand Tel. 034 620050 Fax. 034 622975 Email: railway@access.inet.co.th I have photographs in my files of POW scrip that I found in the British Museum made by British officers in one of their camps and maybe this Centre has some too. So both of these places could be of much interest to Gramsters who collect POW "stuff" and I hope this is useful to them. The notes are lithographed on bank note paper with heavy threads. AU $35. I also bought some tokens after the negotiations were complete on the training notes above. One of the cool things about the tokens is that they are in two by two envelopes on which Mark and I commemorated the AmAus MicroFest with the date, title and signatures so you get a souvenir along with the token.
