From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1011 Date: Thursday, September 25, 2003 11:19 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1011 Thursday September 25, 2003 West Fest Report by Al Glaser The first mini-fest west of the Pecos has come and gone. Twelve brave individuals battled Southern California traffic, parking problems and a bourse floor flood which caused a 3 1/2 delay in opening the show on Saturday to take part in the first WestFEST. All who came had a wonderful show and tell item or story for the group. At the close of show and tell there was a call to pay. British Military Authority Lire which were used in the Tripolitania area of North Africa were overprinted by the WestFEST Currency Board for use in California. Each attendee was paid 168 lire for their participation. The 1, 2, 5, 10, 50 and 100 Lire denominations were distributed. Serial numbers were random in each envelope which immediately began the hunt for specific numbers. While searching for numbers, varieties were being discovered. Replacements, inverts, uniface, missing printings, second printings and double denominations were found. A special 1 pound presentation piece commemorating the event was observed with the overprint "LONG BEACH." This note looks remarkably similar to the BMA 1 pound note overprinted with "BULGARIA," "GREECE" and "FRANCE" SB 306c-e. A small guerilla group formed at the end of the proceedings and met for chow. Colonel Mark Watson managed to sneak his son Corporal Chris Watson into the mess hall alongside the rest of the salty lot. It became apparent Chris was not there for the camaraderie, he had in his possession a 1 Lire note with serial number 1, and he wanted to deal. After a heated exchange with prices being barked back and forth across the table, the anonymous buyer (Kevin Neidy) hit $50.00 when the shrewd Corporal Chris decided to accept (Kevin was begging by this time). After the gavel fell, a smile from ear to ear was noticed on Steve Swoish's face as he is the holder of the serial #1 100 lire replacement note! A fabulous souvenir card for the event was prepared by Ed Beaman, these were just incredible! Ya shouda been there!!! Maybe WestFEST II. The Portland, Oregon, ANA is March 26-28 and it is sponsored by the Willamette Coin Club with Larry Gaye as the show chairman. Howard Sarg Daniel will be manning a NI/NBS/IBNS club table at this show, and moderating meetings for NI and IBNS. As always, Gramsters are welcome at the NI and IBNS meetings and at the club table. Good Reviews by Joe Boling I received my Toy Horse currency crate from ANA on Monday. I had forgotten to bring my bicycle helmet home from the theater last night (it is a prop in my one-man show), and I could not ride to the PO today. Good thing - the crate would have been too large to bring home on the bike. I wonder what the postal people thought about the magic marker TOY HORSE markings on the cardboard wrapper? Tom Koch suggested a minifest in conjunction with my show in the Seattle Fringe Theatre Festival. That would be delightful, but there is little time to organize it. There are three more performances: Friday-Sat-Sunday 26-28 September, at 1800, 1530, and 2000 hours respectively. A lot of the Theater Schmeater regulars (that is the producing company) are planning to come on closing night, the 28th, so I suggest Friday night or Saturday afternoon if Tom wants to put this together. On Saturday there will be at least two festers there - me and Gail Baker (she arrives Saturday in time for the 1530 show). So far (first four performances) audiences have been light - 12-15 per night. That seems to be common across the Fringe Festival this year, at least for this first weekend. We are all hoping for better houses on closing weekend. I have had three numismatists attend that I know of - Steve Cox (president of the Seattle Numismatic Society) and his wife (she is also a collector - of sewing machines) came opening night. His review (and four more by theater people) can be found at http://www.seattlefringe.org/cgi/shows_view.cgi?Show=What%20Does%20it%20Mean%20to%20be%20Joe%20Boling?#review. Larry and Kathy Rowe of Vancouver, Washington, came Sunday night after working a shift at the Puyallup Fair for the PNNA [Pacific NW Numismatic Association--Ed.]. Other reviews can be found at www.theatreseattle.com and http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/theater/140739_fringe22.html. My own comments about the opening night experience are at http://www.tpsonline.org/discus/index.html (click on . There was a server corruption on that board Sunday, and the original thread with my show name was lost. When restored, it had only test messages appended to it. So, if any of you readers think you might drop by for a show this weekend, let's set a day and make sure that you get tickets (available online from that same Fringe Festival web page I cited above where the Steve Cox review is). And as for pay - - - Tom, do you have something in mind? I am sure we could scare something up from Bill Henderson that could be overprinted in a hurry. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Well, I found a new way to get behind on the Gram. Basically, this Gram has been finishes since Tue., but I had a problem. Joe mentions his Toy Horse box in his column. I could not send out the Gram without getting into this and just could not get around to it. He is talking about the replica wooden boxes used in the ANA WWII numismatics exhibition. These crates simulated those used to ship the various Allied military currency issues to the respective theaters. Larry Lee of the ANA museum has arranged that we collectors can have some of these boxes at nominal fees. That is GREAT, but I could not just let it go at that. I figured that I could make a good thing better and in trying to do that I have delayed everything. Basically, I figured that we might be able to have all or most of the boxes shipped to Fest headquarters at a savings over individual shipping charges. Festers could then take them home. Of course the added twist would be that we could pile them up in the Fest room for photos etc. Well, I still have not called Larry to talk about this. (Larry, are you there?) I really will try to get that coordination done on Fri. I guess that there is a silver lining in that now I should be able to fill two editorials on the same subject! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, You should check out the reviews on Joe's play! Go to www.seattlefringe.org and click on "Write a Review." Then scroll down to "What Does It Mean to be Joe Boling" and click to read the reviews. ( http://www.seattlefringe.org/cgi/shows_view.cgi?Show=What%20Does%20it%20Mean%20to%20be%20Joe%20Boling?#review ) You might want to reprint one or two in the Gram -- or just list the link. I am looking forward to seeing the play again this weekend. BTW, the WestFest at Long Beach was great. I enjoyed meeting some of the people whose names I see in the Gram. Gail Dear Gail, Yes, I agree, the reviews are a hoot. Did you do any recruiting for the military seminar at the Fest? Want to sell your pay? This note has the following test: Royal Australian Army Pay Corps/Facsimile Currency for Training Purposes Only. The denomination is 10 (units?). The notes are lithographed on bank note paper with heavy threads. AU $35. I also bought some tokens after the negotiations were complete on the training notes above.
