From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1014 Date: Tuesday, September 30, 2003 7:37 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1014 Tuesday September 30, 2003 Ski Home Larry Smulczenski was released from the hospital on Saturday. He reports still being a little soar, but is back on the trail of numismatic adventures. Fringe Fest Report by Joe Boling Well, I guess I had better get started on this, though I'd much rather go to bed. A succession of nights with 3-5 hours sleep is catching up with me. Sunday night was the closing performance of my one-man show (titled What is it Like to be Joe Boling?) in the USO tour of the Seattle Fringe Theatre Festival. Those of you who attended the summer seminar saw an earlier version of it. This was the night that fester Tom Koch proposed should be a minifest (called playFest in the gram calendar). For someone so keen to have a pay event, he sure did leave his fest-wits at home, arriving without a challenge coin or a show-and-tell item (he pleaded his grandkids as the reason for his lack of attention to detail). Gail Baker and I (the only other festers at the event) decided he should get extra duty, so he was made paymaster. Fringe Fest Certificates prepared by the PlayFest Currency Board in dollar denominations were issued. Lacking a graphic arts detachment or color presses, the board had to adapt existing notes to the Fringe Fest requirement. Fortunately, a supply of British Armed Forces Special Vouchers was available in the property disposal yard in Puyallup. These are 50 new pence notes of series 6, printed by BWCo. They were overprinted on the face as follows, with bars obliterating the original issuing authority statements between the large Xs (which covered the counters in the corners): AUTHORIZED FOR USE AT THEATER SCHMEATER FRINGE FEST CERTIFICATE TWO DOLLARS PLAYFEST CURRENCY BOARD The backs bear the following text: This Fringe Fest certificate is exchangeable in trade for the value overprinted on the face hereof at the Theater Schmeater canteen during the dates 19–28 September 2003, or on extended dates as may be promulgated by the PlayFest Currency Board. R. West R. Haney Director Manager Additional certificates in denominations of fifty cents, one dollar, and five dollars were prepared for pay purposes; each fester received pay of $15 consisting of one complete set and one set short the $2 note. This is because each person arriving in the theater received a $2 note. The Fringe Festival HQ had misprinted the landing fee in the master Festival program ($12 instead of $10), so each person arriving received a $2 refund in the form of a coupon valid for use at the canteen. Earlier arrivers (19-27 September) had received small blue cards with appropriate text (which did not identify the issuer as the PlayFest Currency Board). The newly overprinted notes were completed just in time for the final day's troops (work finished only hours before their arrival). One pack of 100 notes was overprinted, bearing serials B/2 410001 through 410100. Numbers 1-80 were prepared as $2 notes, anticipating the arrivals that day at about 75 troops (numbers 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8 being retained for archival purposes). The remaining twenty notes were overprinted as follows: fifty cents, numbers 81, 85, 88, 91, 94, 98. $1, numbers 82, 86, 89, 92, 95, 99. $2, numbers 83, 96. $5, numbers 84, 87, 90, 93, 97, 100. Actual distribution of $2 notes by the terminal management unit was as follows: 3,4,5,9-47,75-80. Notes 48-74 were not claimed by the troops authorized to receive them (there were indeed just about 75 processed through the terminal unit), and were turned over to Currency Board officials at the conclusion of the day. These were deemed to be remainders, since the dates of validity had expired and no extension had been proposed. They were subsequently punched with a single hole in the lower right portion (as seen from the face) of the note. During production of the overprints, some notes were observed to feed through the press at an angle, resulting in a skewed overprint on the face. Notes numbers 10-12 were particularly badly printed, but were left in the group delivered to the terminal management unit because the number of available notes was anticipated to be almost exactly the capacity of the port on that day. Those notes thus entered circulation. Notes redeemed by the canteen were subsequently bought by the three festers present. Approximately half of the issued notes were so recovered, including at least two of the error overprint notes. Thirteen circulated notes (plus one that was converted to a short snorter) are in the possession of this writer, together with the stock of cancelled remainders. The numbers of circulated notes recovered by Mr. Koch and Ms. Baker are not known to me. There is a radar note out there someplace (410014). I will offer pairs of issued and cancelled notes as follows, as far as the supply allows: $2 face for the issued note, $0.20 production cost for the cancelled note, $0.37 postage per order, not to exceed two pairs per respondent. Thus $2.57 for one pair, $4.77 for two pairs. This should be all the information Al Glaser needs for his research. I doubt any production by GLBNC has been so thoroughly documented. [GLBNC treats all information as confidental.--Ed]  =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Fringe Fest sounds like it was a real hoot. I particularly lik the way that the notes were used at the concession stand. This is something of a first. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor- First and foremost, our thoughts are with good friend Larry Smulczenski. We wish him a speedy recovery. Second, we want to thank the Gram (and you personally) for its constant and enthusiastic support of our auctions. Speaking for Lyn and myself, both of us have enjoyed writing articles in the Gram as well as participating in events such as the Dallas Fest. In reading your assessment of changes at Lyn Knight Currency Auctions, I would like to take this opportunity to respond as follows: 1) I would definitely agree that our firm "has taken a leadership position in selling military money in the past few years." The Leo May and current World War II collections were cited. As is well known, we also handled the Marvin Mericle collection earlier this year in Chicago. Finally, we have also sold important individual pieces. In short, the material offered, percentage of pieces sold, and prices realized all speak for themselves. 2) As far as this change goes in relation to the current World War II collection as well as all other holdings, current/future auctions will NOT be affected. 3) As far as Lyn's forays into MPC, it is important to remember that Lyn sold a variety of paper money PRIOR TO his involvement with Collectors Universe. Again, there will be no effect as far as the quantity and quality of material sold, whether it is MPC or anything else. 4) Collectors Universe did an admirable job in facilitating Lyn Knight auctions and sales. We expect to do at least as well, if not better, in continuing our catalogs and on-line product. We definitely appreciate your comment regarding serial numbers; this is something that can be addressed in future catalogs. 5) Finally, we expect changes to be minimal for customers. The biggest effect may well be the absence of sales tax issues for collectors NOT living in Kansas that get auction notes mailed to them. Sales tax will only be an issue for Kansas residents and individuals who want to pick notes up at the events or live in the state that the event takes place (unless that state does not tax our hobby). We look forward to seeing everyone in Saint Louis. As usual, I will be writing an article(s) regarding highlights in that sale. Sincerely, Joel Shafer-Managing Director, World Bank Note Division Lyn Knight Currency Auctions Dear Editor, Please have Harold pass on our best wishes to Larry. All Downunder wish him a speedy recovery. Cheers, Trevor =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== IBNS London Congress on October 4 and 5 at the Trade Union Congress hall, two blocks from the British Museum.
