From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1015 Date: Thursday, October 02, 2003 11:31 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1015 Thursday October 2, 2003 War Bond Auction Results by Mark "Sparky" Watson Last Friday, 26 Sep 03, Currency Auctions of America (CAA) had a sale in Cincinnati. In addition to some Military Payment Certificates (MPCs), CAA had four lots of U.S. bonds associated with World War II. The following is a summary of the bonds offered along with the prices realized which include the buyer’s premium. All of the bonds were issued to Andrew Owens of Mount Dora, Florida. They also are not redeemed or cancelled. This probably means that Owens (or his heirs) was deprived of the value of the bonds—but not absolutely. It is also possible that these are bonds that had been lost by the rightful owner and replaced making these simply the collectors items that they are represented to be in the auction. Obviously they came to the market as a group. This is a routine occurrence. The first bond auctioned off was lot 522, a $25 Large Size Series E War Savings Bond (Schwan-Boling [SB] number 226), issued Nov 1942. The bond had a vertical fold down the middle along with staining on the bottom two corners. CAA graded the bond as About New with an estimate of $200 to $300; SB has a price of $75. The item sold for $322, rather high in my opinion considering I have seen similar bonds, in better condition, go for lower amounts. In the next lot, CAA put up for bid a $1000 Series E Defense Savings Bond (SB 225) issued March 1943. The bond was in a similar condition as the previous lot with a vertical fold and staining in the bottom two corners – obviously stored in the same place. CAA again graded the bound as About New with an estimate of $900 to $1400; SB lists it at a rather low $450. The bond sold for $1495, a good buy according to the MPCGram editor. The third item, lot 524, was a $50 Reduced Size Series E War Savings Bond (SB 233) with a fold horizontally about 1/3 up from the bottom. CAA graded the bond Extremely Fine with a high estimate of $250 to $350; SB lists it at $95. Like the $25 bond, the bond sold high at $345 as examples with no folds are available at lower prices. In lot 526, CAA offered a $100 Series F Defense Savings Bond issued March 1943. This bond is mentioned in SB and would be SB 252, but SB did not list the Series F and G bonds but just reserved a block of numbers for them. Coming from the same location as the first two items, and in like condition with a vertical fold and staining in the lower corners, CAA graded it as extremely fine with an estimate of $400 to $700. The bond sold well over the estimate and closed at $2415. I have never seen this bond before (a similar comment was made by the cataloger) This seems to be an important research for WWIIRemembered2 as it confirms that Series F (and Series G?) were issued as defense (and probably war) bonds. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Mark Watson is certainly correct that the $100 Series F bond is significant for research. Possibly you have not paid attention to the US World War II bonds. Take a look at page 291-3 in Remembered. We had some good information on the Series E bonds, but really knew nothing about the Series F and G issues. I feel lucky that we at least mentioned them, speculated about the war relationship, and even saved catalog numbers for them. We are very interested in hearing of other F and G bonds in collections. I must also comment that the prices realized (and other observations) support the idea that the bonds are catching on as the important historic artifacts that they are. On the other hand, the wide range of prices realized (in the CAA auction and elsewhere as indicated by Sparky) also indicate that the market is immature at best and crazy at worst. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, I have been getting email on the new grading lights just a note that anyone who knows about MPC knows the rules! Rule #1 Buy the Book! Rule #2 Buy the book! Rule #3 READ YOUR BOOK! Now for a new rule #4 Buy the light! and the reasons as Guy Araby noted earlier that this light is magnificent! It shows every little flaw in every note! It shows hidden corner folds, hidden center folds and even note doctoring! This light is not just for Grading and buying notes it is good to 150 ft deep of water and is used in many many other applications in every day life but it is a must for the MPC buyer for many reasons, as our notes get increasingly more valuable more and more people that you wouldn't suspect are doing things like pressing and doctoring notes! This light exposes them when used right every time! It takes the guess work out of is it a fold or is it a crease all the time, every time by showing you in great detail the flaws of the note. It shows you more then 50% of what a natural light can expose and will save you time and money. Every one has that story of I did not see it when I bought it scenario! This is your defense and insurance policy against those that want to take advantage of you by selling you a processed or pressed note that could cost you thousands of dollars, and yes it has happened to me? This light is a compact LED light source that has 5 individual bulbs that aluminates a very intense ray of high tech, optically delivered intense light source and for every light ordered from a gramster the Company is going to donate $5 to the scholarship fund in your name for a short period of time, you can get these and our donation by emailing me at kevinn517@hotmail.com for more information. It will pay for itself mine has. Sincerely Kevin Dear Gram, The first WestFest has come and gone, and a fine time it was. Al put on a great meeting, and the pay currency was exceptional. Likewise, Ed's souvenir card was a keeper as well. As reported by Guy Araby, the meeting consisted of show and tell followed by a pay call. After that, there was a voluntary report to the mess hall over in the marina where Steve S, Kevin N, Al G, Ed B, my son, and myself all had some dinner. My son, Chris "Make him pay till he bleeds" Watson made the deal of the evening by selling one of his Fest notes to Kevin N for $50. The next day, Chris promptly spent the money by buying a Gameboy cartridge and a Bionicle DVD. Also, certain serial numbered Fest notes are headed to Joe B and David S for future trades. Cheers, Sparky Dear Sparky, Thanks for the report. You and your family must have been everywhere. I saw your pictures in Numismatic News.
