This makes the second match found by the database and the first pictures of the matched notes in the gram. The ability of matching sn numbers has be greatly improved by the mpc database. It has programmed in it the ability to match the numeral part of the sn# (excluding the suffix and prefix.) Doug was entering notes and matched a note Harold entered 1.5 years ago. When a match is found, the database notifies both parties (the second person interactively and the first via email.) Doug and Harold promptly got together on the phone. Negotiations are underway. Berlin Barter Store By Warner Talso I thought of you Gramsters the other night. We had friends for dinner Thursday evening. He is a retired Ordnance Corps colonel and his wife was a military brat whose father retired as an Infantry colonel. Anyway, she spent 1946-1949 in Berlin while her father was assigned there as a major. She was 10 to 12 years old. She remembers going to the barter store with her mother. They took cigarettes and food. I had not thought about the details of barter operations until this conversation. (It seems logical that there were fixed prices for routine commodities like a pack of cigarettes or a loaf of bread, but she does not remember.) It was fascinating. She also remembers her father coming home one night and announcing that they had to get all their money together because there was going to be a surprise conversion the next day. I assume that was the currency reform of 1948 (or the introduction of MPC in September 1946). She does not remember what the currency looked like and is fuzzy on the details. It was still exciting to talk to someone who had "been there." BTW, this couple went back to Berlin last year. Their daughter and son-in-law (major, JAG) are stationed in Germany. They went to Berlin and this lady tried to find where her family had lived and the school she went to. They spent two days looking with no luck. Not surprising - it had been 45 years and a lot has changed. Then on the way to the airport to leave she shouted "stop" and "turn left." She had recognized the street they had lived on. She then found her old family quarters. Very emotional experience. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== The database serial number match reported above is great news. Such matches are a bonus for the people who put in the effort to enter notes in the database. Such entry provides many other benefits, but this one alone is enough to encourage the effort. This is an ideal case because the notes are otherwise unremarkable pieces. However, paired with it mate both become very desirable. The problem comes in getting the notes into one collection. The first pair put together (to my knowledge) without access to unissued stocks (some pairs of Series 541 and 691 were put together by people with general access to the stocks) were identified at Fest I(!). In that case both pieces were replacements (Series 661 50c and $20.) From the first moment, the owner of the $20 indicated that it would be impossible to get that note away from him(on top of being a replacement, it was one of only two known second printing replacements). The two collectors set out to make a deal and one was struck. I think that both parties felt that they had given too much so it was probably an equitable deal. Doug Bell suggested that some sort of protocol might be introduced to help make deals possible (the first pair identified by the database has not been brought together). I do not think that it will be possible, but a discussion might be interesting or even fun and you just never know. One concept is as with the 661s above. The priority might go to the person with the more rare basic note (disregarding the match). The idea here is that that one would be harder to replace if taken from a collection. The priority might also go to the one who entered his/her note first. Then of course, possibly the first opportunity to obtain the pairs should go to the Gram editor! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear All, Quite lovely to report from London IBNS. Visited the Show on Saturday afternoon and had the opportunity to say hello to Ian Marshall, Tom Warburton and Mel Steinberg. There were approximately 60 dealers at the Bourse but I must say that most were selling modern issues and MPC was a foreign word. I do agree with the Steamed Editor and say it is a most interesting show to visit as I met again several friends from the Maastricht shows. I did not attend the auction so cannot say anything about prices realized etc.etc. I did receive my MFC pay as I had my Pay Book along and am willing to make trades for this issue??
