From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1020 Date: Tuesday, October 07, 2003 3:50 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1020 Tuesday October 7, 2003 More What Is it like to Be Joe? by Joe Boling Well, I have been run ragged for the past three weeks. I just tonight read grams 1016-1019 to see if there was going to be anything to comment on in tonight's column, and there was this tremendous trip report from Gail Baker. Now, if I could get her to write the commentaries on all those shows for me - I have not written them yet. No time. For one thing, I have had to be domestic for the past ten days. My plum tree bore a record or near record crop this year. I picked thirteen large plastic grocery bags full of plums (three varieties - it is a grafted tree). I have already made eight pies and two batches of jam, given three bags of plums to the PO and bank, and thrown away about three bags' worth that got too ripe (and moldy) to do anything with. I have two bags left to wash, cull, and cut up, plus enough processed plum meat for 3-4 pies. It takes about two hours to go through one bag, and I have been doing one a day. My apple tree had a record crop this year, too, but it only generated enough apples for seven pies (plus eating apples, as I am also doing with the plums). Bottom line - no time even for my mail and email, let alone any projects (like revising the ANA exhibit rules, which are now overdue at HQ). I will get to them this week. The issued PlayFest Currency Board notes went in a hurry - I could not fill all requests received. I still have a small number of the canceled pieces (seven or so). If you want two (no more than two to a customer), email to confirm availability, then send a SASE plus one loose stamp (that is the payment - it is close to forty cents). Tom, did you get the radar note among the pieces that you bought from the till? Today's mail brought a counterfeit series 681 $20 from Vietnam, an eBay lot that I won. It is not well preserved, and even in its heyday would have had to be passed at night without benefit of lights. But the colors are decent, especially the back, and it is printed by line lithography (at least five colors on the face, two on the back). It is position 14, SN C86801576C. It looks like the SNs were printed en bloc, not with a proper numbering machine (digits only - the digits are slightly doubled in both serials, but the blocks are put on in a separate operation and are not doubled). Does anyone else have an example of this fake with any documentation or other indication of where it was prepared and circulated? The Master Sergeant alerted me to this lot - thanks, Top. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I always wondered about the plum record. For you who have not seen Joe’s play, the agricultural aspects were completely ignored. I spent most of yesterday with Fester Cuneyd Tolek. He was in New Orleans on biz for the past few days. I picked him up at the airport. He was buzzing with excitement over his visit to the D-Day Museum in New Orleans. I have been wanting to go there for a long time. http://www.ddaymuseum.org/ Among other things Cuneyd demanded a copy of WWII Remembered from the museum book store. They promised to get a copy for him! Hopefully, Cuneyd will give a more detailed report. If anyone else has been there we could use your report too. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, I understand that a feature in the gram credited me with a new BAFSV book. This is wonderful news as I have neither received the gram (for over a year I think) nor have I published a new BAFSV edition. I'm sorry to have to burst this bubble! I did publish a new book on British Military Authority notes (Occupation Currency 1942-1956), however, which is probably at the heart of the confusion. Although nothing to do with BAFSVs it might be of interest as it debunks most of what is thought to be known about these notes. It also describes a new series (as yet unknown as far as I can make out) and a few other small tidbits. It also contains some (new?) info on Yellow Seal dollars as used in Europe. Hope nobody is too disappointed. Theo Dear Theo, Wow, your letter touches on just about everything dear to an editors heart! Instead of being disappointed, I am thrilled that your new book is on BMA notes. When last we met, you told me that you were working on it and I believe that I mentioned that exciting fact in the Gram. I can hardly wait to get my hands on a copy. The confusion would have been greatly reduced if we could have had a news release (hint, hint) or review (Marcus, hint, hint). We would still love to have those and expect that they would be headline items and that they would also sell some books! I am most disappointed that you have not been receiving your daily Gram. The aol addresses continue to cause problems. I have added your address to a supplemental list in the hope that the your Gram will get through. We continue to recommend to serious Gramsters that they create an additional address (yahoo or hotmail for example) to receive their Gram. We will even send a second Gram as a free bonus to your subscription (if you give us both addresses). Editor Dea Gram, Just thought you should know that Theo's new book is not an updated version of his BAFSV book. It's completely new and covers the issues of the British Military Authority. It's in full colour and as you'd expect from Theo, there is a lot of new information and like his other books will probably become THE book on the subject. Claire Lobel Dear Claire, Thanks. If you are selling the book, please give us detials! Editor Dear Editor, Saw this item on ebay that I just had to comment on. It is one of the 691/ $ 1 notes that has been "VOID" cancelled. As offered in the GRAM just a few months ago. Check it out @ ebay.com item # 3050226914. Originally offered for a $ 10.00 donation, at present, it is just over $ 100.00. Just goes to show, It pays to read the Gram!! Jack Hunter Dear Gram, I think that the Joe Boling play should be performed at Fest V. Ski Dear Ski, Great idea. What do you think, Joe?
