From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1021 Date: Thursday, October 09, 2003 10:17 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1021 Thursday October 9, 2003 On the Road Again by The Master Sergeant Daniel Yesterday, I did not think I would get everything done on my list of things to do, and my wife's honey-do list. But somehow I completed everything and had 15 minutes to catch my breath before the taxi took me to Reagan National Airport. It was a smooth and quick Delta Airlines flight to JFK International Airport and I checked in at Singapore Airlines. I am in the Business Class lounge for Swiss Air and just finished a nice baked chicken dinner with a great glass of Swiss red wine. Did you know that the keyboard on a German-language PC has a different layout for some of the letters and other keys? I am going to keep this shorter than usual because it is starting to drive me nuts! One thing I would like to mention is that I mailed a photocopy of a photograph of the main gate sign at the Free Military Forces compound in Saigon to Harold Kroll. There are MANY more countries on it than I remember and if all were given PX/Commissary privileges, there were a lot more "foreigners" using MPC! Harold can tell you about it after he receives it. That is all for now. I am going to find a place here in the terminal where I can watch some nice looking young ladies walk by me. This lounge is full of old geezers and their mates. Exhibit on Iowa rescuers of Jewish refugees during WWII opens November 9th on the Caspe Terrace in Des Moines, Iowa. On display until January 11th 2004 and then to tour statewide through summer 2005. WWII Exhibit Iowa Jewish Historical Society, Humanities Iowa and TRACES present an exhibit on the Quaker-run Scattergood Hostel at West Branch, Iowa. Far from Hitler: The Scattergood Hostel for European Refugees, 1939-43 Iowa Jewish Historical Society Caspe Heritage Gallery The Caspe Terrace 3320 Ute Avenue, Waukee (suburban Des Moines, Iowa) November 9th 2003 through January 11th 2004 Opening – Sunday, November 9th, 2:30pm (the 64th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Nazis’ “Night of Broken Glass”) Robbie Winick, Iowa Jewish Historical Society President Michael Luick-Thrams, TRACES Executive Director Former Scattergood Hostel staff and refugees or their family members will include: Robert Berquist (staff, pending), Phil Clampitt (husband of refugee, brother of staff, son of Scattergood committee), Camilla Hewson-Flintermann (staff), Doris Peters (widow of refugee) and her daughter; others pending Governor Vilsack has been invited to attend. From April 1939 to March 1943 about 185 refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe found an unexpected safe haven at Scattergood, a temporary hostel in what had been a Quaker boarding school near West Branch, Iowa. Among them were a large percentage of Jews, as well as political opponents of Hitler’s regime, Christian religious leaders, artists and others endangered in the “New Germany.” (The Quaker staff didn’t note which of their “guests” were Jews and which were not. A review of the refugees’ names plus information gathered during research, however, suggest that approximately 85% of those individuals seeking refuge at Scattergood were either self-identified Jews or identified as Jews by others.) With the help of the Quaker farmers and idealistic college students who took them in, the refugees (referred to as “guests” by staff) sought to overcome the trauma of their experiences in Europe, find a niche for themselves and build new lives in the New World. Far from Hitler is sponsored by the Iowa Jewish Historical Society and TRACES and supported by a major grant from Humanities Iowa, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. TRACES executive director Michael Luick-Thrams conceptualized the exhibit and oversaw its creation. Former refugees and staff donated documents, photographs, artifacts and interviews. The Iowa Jewish Historical Society and TRACES will bring this story to life through artifacts and audio-visual materials. Never before has an exhibit made this little-known story accessible to the public. Join us for the opening event on Sunday, November 9, or visit the exhibit during museum hours. For more information on the event contact the Iowa Jewish Historical Society at (515) 987-0899. Camilla Hewson-Flintermann, staff member of Scattergood will be available for interviews in Des Moines from Friday, November 7 through Monday November 10. For additional information on Scattergood contact www.TRACES.org Contact Person for this event: Jody Hramits, Iowa Jewish Historical Society (515)277-6321. www.iajhs@hotmail.com =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Today was the release of the new US $20 notes. I tried every bank in a two county area to find just a single example. No luck. It seems to me that we should have had special consideration since MFC was the inspiration for the new designs. There just is no justice I guess. It is hard to make a clear connection of these new notes to our primary mandate of studying military money, but still, we will be happy to have reports and observations of early uses of the notes. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Received 2 grams sent 36 seconds apart. Ken Berger Dear Gram, Believe it or not I was in Chievely which is outside of Newberry which is outside of Reading which was outside of London about 40 miles. The trip into London would have taken a bus and three rail connections. I instead went metal detecting and found a nice lead papal seal (medieval) and quite a few nice George the 1st II and III coins. I was truly thinking of you guys but again I just couldn't make it. My apologies and thanks for looking out for me Marcus. I am now in Berlin and I will see if there is any stray MPC still floating around. Take Care All..... Gary( Who has Fours) Hicks Dear Gram, I also agree that Joe should perform his play at the Fest, and I would also like to ask that both Joe & Fred do a reenactment of the 1985 ANA auction purchase of the 651 fractionals. How about it guys? Dick Freyser Dear Dick, Hm, if Joe does his play, we can consider that for 2005. Thanks for the vote of confidence. Possibly we should not have done it at the seminar. Editor Dear Editor, This is NOT FOR PUBLICATION Gram 1019 finally came in at 3:49 PM today. It was accompanied by two copies of 1020 at exactly the same time--3:49 PM. That is wierd isn't? Name Withheld Dear Name, I liked your letter and thought that withholding your name was about the same as not publishing it.
