From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1023 Date: Sunday, October 12, 2003 12:03 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1023 Sunday October 12, 2003 First Full Day in Saigon by The Master Sergeant Daniel I flew in yesterday on Singapore Airlines flight 172 from Singapore. My seatmate was a Dutchman who works for International SOS. He made a ton of money on Wall Street a few years ago and went back home and is doing volunteer or low-pay work. Great guy and I hope to meet him and his family some day in Amsterdam. The flight landed at 11AM, but it took almost an hour to come through immigrations! There were two Vietnamese in front of me with screwed up visas and it took forever to get them out of the way. My bags were waiting for me and customs was quick because I was carrying a lot of cash and went through a "special" line. About six of my relatives were waiting for me and I was stuck in a taxi with two of my 20 and 22-year old nieces. Yes, I do have hardships once in awhile. My townhouse is still here and looking real good. I hung out with the family for three hours then took a taxi downtown to Van Dung Shop at 15 Le Loi. Dung is my brother here in old Saigon and he is my primary numismatic and philatelic dealer here. The first news he had for me was not good. He had fewer than 6 pieces of MPC and it is not coming in like previous years. I had that strong feeling last year that the majority of the MPC here has been soaked up and sent to the USA. I will keep looking and you guys need to send me a want list via email at Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com so I buy what you are looking for. My 20 year old niece, who is also my adopted daughter, is nicknamed Tu. She is going to work with me for the month and one-half I am here to produce a Socialist Viet Nam coins and paper money book. I am also going to try to have it printed here in color. We shall see how things work out. That is all for now. I will write more when I have some numismatic news. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Well, I seem to have made my counting errors even worse by trying to fix them. I only hope that I have this one correct! I still have not seen a new US $20 note, but I heard on the news tonight that the new Iraq notes will be introduced on October 15. Has anyone heard anything about this? Seen the notes? We have discussed the matter of Iraq currency (paper money AND coins) in the past, but the subject seemed to fade away. I for one am very interested to see the notes. I assume that the printer will be obvious by examination, but possibly it will not be. Denominations and exchange rates will be interesting. Your comments before and after will certainly be welcome. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, I received one copy of GRAM 1021 but when the corrected number line issue (GRAM 1022) was sent out, I received two copies 13 seconds apart. Did you send it out twice? Ken Dear Gram, Even with all those grams (3 of them), you still never corrected the number in the actual Gram heading. Sparky Hello Gramsters, Just thinking of something that might be fun! An MPC crossword puzzle! Although my grammer leaves something to be desired, I figured you "educated gramsters" (I.E. Joe B. or Fred or?) could "make up" a pretty cool one. I will give it a try. Believe or not, I never play crossword puzzles, but and MPC one would be FUN?? Well it is up to you fellow gramsters to start it up?? monthly? ((Doug-- the wizard! may be good at setting this up?)) Just a thought.! Guy! P.S. My best wishes and prayers to a great recovery for Larry "SKI" Smulczenski. I always enjoy his columns! Guy! Dear Guy, What a great idea! I will get to it as soon as I finish with Middle East Peace and world famine. I guess this is my way of saying that this is not a project for me…, but I would not be surprised if someone can meet the challenge. Bill Murray wrote a poem for kilogram, Ed Beaman has created stunning verbal and visual MPC items, and Russ Walsh has created great MFC art. Gramsters are indeed talented. I think that there might even be software to help build cross word puzzles. If someone can create a good one, we might even put it in the next MPC book. Thanks for the idea.
