From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1025 disregard gram labeled 1026 Date: Tuesday, October 14, 2003 10:37 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1025 Tuesday October 14, 2003 Exchange Notes Issued MPCFest 2003 Foreign Exchange notes were issued at the recently completed London IBNS paper money fair. The spectacular notes feature famous English military personnel. The notes were used to pay Festers who attended the event. Exact information on quantities issued is not available. Festers and others who have seen the notes have raved about the art and production quality. Photographs of the notes are available at the following links. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/Photo%20Front.jpg http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/Photos%20Back.jpg This n That by Joe Boling Well, again I have been plumb out of time all week (the plums are still being processed), so tonight I read grams 1020-24 in preparation for writing this column. In re the suggestion that I perform "What is it Like to Be Joe Boling" at the next fest, I might be able to do that if I can get all the props into a suitcase and stay under the weight limit. One issue would be that the boxes that hold the props during the show would not be shipable; I would have to improvise something on site after I arrive. Nor would one particular prop be easily shipable, a five-foot long climbing stick (and I would not want to risk having it broken; I have seen what airlines do to long items). Otherwise, I would be pleased to do it. Gail has already informed me that it will be on the Numismatic Theater program for Portland, but I can drive there with all the props. Further to Warner Talso's column in gram 1021/22, Britain continued to ration consumer goods into the 1950s, much longer than the US (the US, as I recall, essentially stopped rationing even before the war ended, in early 1945 - someone correct this if necessary). OK, so who sent in the item about the Benevolent Order of TS? Which I loved, by the way. Item received this week - lot 527 from the CAA Cincinnati sale, described as a hand-made pseudo-currency item. In addition to my interest in it as a "counterfeit," the legends on it convince me that it is actually trench art. Now, the fact that it is large-size currency dimensions means WWI. It was obviously prepared by a semi-literate person. Legends include the following (misspellings as shown on the note): face Will.Pay.to the Bearer.Five.Dollars.in.Coin.out of Fonda.Mounton.County.Bank.Montina.State No.29. UNITED STATES NATIONAL CURENCEY FONDA.N.Y.BANK.M.S.G.T.GLOARY. Bonds.Cartar FIVE.DOLLARS. 5.97.8.11.^.. back United.States.of Hollen.Gearmeny.Tearitory.A.Treasurey.Note.issued.on Gold.and Silver.Coin.^.. this Note.is A.Leagel.Tender.to.Five.Dollars The symbol ^ represents the Greek letter delta, used twice as a spacer. The piece is hand-drawn in brown and green on bond paper with the watermark ALEXIS BOND. OK, you numerologists - what does 5.97.8.11 mean? If it is WWI, and 97 is a birth year, that puts the artist at about 21 years old. There IS a Fonda NY, a burg of 1000 on the Mohawk River between Utica and Schenectady. But there are no mountains near – it is between the Adirondacks and the Catskills. (There are also Fondas in Iowa and North Dakota, but not Montana.) And note the MSGT - except for the periods (which he uses all over the note as word separators), it sure looks like a common military abbreviation. One final comment - the CAA description calls it "very fine with some splits." There is an oxymoron right off the bat - it cannot be VF with splits. But in fact, the note has been torn into two pieces (or separated along one of those "splits") and glued back together; plus, one of the other splits (extending half-way across the note) is also glue-repaired; plus, there are holes totaling over two cm in length along the internal splits. I would say the boys at CAA need to go to grading school. Forewarned is forearmed. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I still have not held (nor even seen in person) a new $20. However, I did see the first television commercial for it. The commercial was cute. A customer at check out was basically juggling a new $20 (juggling is another hobby of mine—check books and balls). The commercial was cute. I liked it, but that seems to be far from the point. Several sources (including Gramsters) have stated that there is a $30 million promotion campaign to introduce the public to the new money. A USA Today editorial blasted this expenditure. I have to agree with the criticism. I hope that we (the public institutions) can learn from this and next time spend $3000 instead of 10,000 times that. The USA Today editorial (and others) stated that the Bureau of Engraving and printing was responsible for this promotion. This seems to be a curious choice to me. Possibly the BEP was the agent for the Federal Reserve or Treasury, or possibly the reports were wrong. As always we invite opposing (or even supporting) views. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor: Coin World's Sept. 27 issue (to be mailed Tuesday Oct. 14) will feature images of the new Iraqi notes on Page 1.
