From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1028 Date: Friday, October 17, 2003 5:52 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1028 Friday October 17, 2003 Excerpts from a DOD news briefing held today (15 Oct) in Bagdad related to the C Day in Iraq Submitted by David Klinger The exchange is a major logistical operation involving, among the elements, printing in six countries -- Sri Lanka, Kenya, Spain, the U.K., Malta and Germany; flying the 2,200 tons of new currency in 747s into Baghdad; three distribution hubs throughout the country; a battalion of Fijian soldiers to move the new currency to the banks and pick up the old currency; a fleet of Russian aircraft to move the currency in country; over 100 convoys that have delivered over 700 tons of currency around the country to date; over 10,000 bank staff and thousands of Iraqi police and bank guards providing security; a destruction site, where the verified notes are incinerated at a rate of up to 500 50-kilo sacks a day -- that's about 25 tons per day -- an information campaign that has distributed thousand of posters, millions of handbills, and a road show that has been to every region of the country; a major training and support program, which has trained 900 Iraqi bankers and provided counting machines, generators, ultraviolet lights and information packs to support the exchange locations. The full briefing can be read at: http://www.defenselink.mil/transcripts/2003/tr20031015-0781.html In related news, according to JAMES ASHTON, reported The Scotsman (9/20/03) DE LA Rue told shareholders yesterday it would be in the money in the first half of the year after the world’s biggest commercial printer of banknotes said it was shipping deliveries of the new Iraqi dinar ahead of schedule. Underlying trading remains in line with earlier guidance but early deliveries to Iraq means the group expects to report interim figures "significantly ahead of expectations." For security reasons, De La Rue does not usually disclose details of individual contracts, but its Iraq involvement was revealed in July by Paul Bremer, the US civil administrator in the country. Finally, I think that our President put the introduction of the new Iraqi Dinars into perspective in his weekend radio address. President Bush hailed the introduction of the dinars, noting that West Germany did not have a new currency until three years after World War II. "In Iraq, it has taken only six months," he said. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Wow. The news reported by David Klinger above about the extent of the allied participation in the conversion is astonishing. Can the notes really have been printed (in part) is six different countries? Assuming that that is correct, was it all by De La Rue? Will we be able to identify the work of the various countries? Then topping the operation by having a battalion of Fijian soldiers deliver the notes. Truly amazing. Possibly Joe Boling should put his play writing talents to this operation! You will recall that we compared this new issue of notes to the 1948 conversion in Germany. Then President Bush used our analysis, but I am not so sure about his statement.
