From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1030 Date: Sunday, October 19, 2003 6:16 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1030 Sunday October 19, 2003 Joe, Tell Us what You Really Think By Joe Boling I examined a new $20 at the Seattle Numismatic Society meeting Thursday night (several members had brought them in, responding to a contest announced by the society president). As I already reported, all were block ED-A. What I confirmed (and had already discussed with BEP folks in Baltimore) is that there is no see-through registration element in the lithographed design, even though we now have the presses needed to print that kind of security feature. Maybe the later notes will finally take advantage of the technology that we have been so late in acquiring. I also found that the lithographed underprint severely interferes with the watermark - the watermark is very hard to make out through all the underprint colors (face AND back have lithography over the watermark). Why did they not leave a window? For starters, applying lithography over a watermark is a chancy operation, because the surface of the paper is disrupted by the watermark and the litho blanket wants a smooth surface to print on. Second, what is the point of having a security feature (the watermark) that nobody can discern? Just who is coordinating these design changes? It does not seem to be anyone who actually knows something about note printing and security. Dr. Paul D Walters of Landrum SC is an IBNS director. New PC in My Townhouse by The Master Sergeant Daniel This is my first email out of Viet Nam that was not done in an Internet cafe. I now have a new Toshiba Satellite notebook in my townhouse that is better and faster than my IBM ThinkPad notebook, and it better be because it cost more than the IBM! With the computer in the house, I can now go to my bank account and pay my bills online. This means I can stay overseas forever with direct deposit of my incoming monies. Isn't technology wonderful? Well, every once in awhile it is. My wife is still here with me so we have been doing "her" things rather than mine, so I cannot yet report anything good to you guys, but I did see a sign yesterday that might bring back some memories for some of you. It had "Vietnam Tea Company," and then "Saigon Tea Company" as its sub-company here in Ho Chi Minh City. I wonder if they know what "Saigon Tea" means to some of us? That is all for now from across the Big Pond. Hang in there for awhile longer and I will start reporting my finds over here. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Well, I finally received a new $20 (thanks to Sam Feeback). I like it a lot—not that that matters much. I may be imagining things (probably am), but the itaglio printing seems sharper than we had been accustomed to. Now, I am most anxious for reports of stars. This reminds me of a cute little Fred story. When the current $100 came out, I was very interested in finding some stars. A few days before I departed for Memphis I found one. I took it along and was showing it off to anyone who would look. Of course at Memphis is was not such a novelty, but still many collectors had not yet seen a star. During the course of the show, I stuck the note in a copy of Doug Murrays book on large size star notes (I guess I figured that a star hundred was a large size star note. Afterall, it was the largest denomination star available). Anyway, I was having fun with it. In a bit of a busy time at the table, I sold the Murray book for the full retail price of $25. I tried to remember who had bought it and Mike Crabb even made an announcement about the large size star note, but it did not show up. Someone got a real bonus! Without question, it was my fault. At least I got a story out of my stupidity. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Received a new $20 here in my store on 10/14. It is also Richmond FRB. Don't know if this is a flaw, but the color shifting ink on the #20 in the lower right on the face doesn't seem to shift. It appears to be copper colored from all angles, no green. Larry Gibbs Dear Gram; Please put me down for MPCFest V in Ohio for March 5-7. In a single room, but might come down where a day early, like I did last year because of the weather. I will drive down there from northeastern Wisconsin. Also I learned a lot last time and brought six notes in Hawaii and North African notes and they tried to sell them all as CCU. Three of them were a good AU. and send them back for replacements and two of them where sent back to me in Gem to keep my business. Also I would like to thank nowhere it was about telling people on the Gram about Heritage internet auction. I won six MPC notes in that auction and two of them I been waiting two years or longer to buy. thank you Bob Olson =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== PCDA National and World Paper Money Convention.
