We practically did not know about lend lease up to 1989 -1990. This was not politically expedient to disclose such information. Due to glasnost we found out the enormous amount of the US material aid of which we did not suspect! In Soviet time there were only known few episodes connected somehow to land lease. E.g. two soldiers are hungry at the front (in the trenches) - one of them says - let us open the second front - meaning simultaneously - a can with American meat and the fact that the second front was opened much later than expected. And one more episode - as the ships with aid were escorted by the English ships moving to Murmasnk in the North on half way they were met by the Soviet protection ships. There were some women on the Soviet ships - if somebody fell thru this or that reason into the cold water - there was only one way of saving the life - the heat of woman's body. There was also one known fact here - when the US government asked for the repayment of the land lease Stalin answered - we have paid with our blood. New Iraqi Dinar By David Klinger Here is a summary of the primary vignettes used on the new Iraqi currency. They are virtually the same as those used on the older "Swiss dinars,” with the exception of the 25000 note. I suppose that is why De La Rue was able to produce & deliver so quickly. 50 Dinar Note FACE The grain silo at Basrah. Working at full capacity the facility can off-load and process 60,000 tonnes of grain per hour. BACK Date palms. Iraq used to be the world’s largest producer and exporter of dates. Over 600 varieties are grown in-country. 250 Dinar Note FACE The astrolabe. One of the earliest scientific instruments - able to measure the time of day or night and altitude and latitude - conceived by the Greeks it was further developed by medieval Arab astronomers, who used it to help determine the time for fasting during the month of Ramadan. BACK The Spiral Minaret in Samarra, built 848-849 A.D. Samarra was then the Abbasid Empire’s capital city. 1000 Dinar Note FACE A gold dinar coin, used in this region until superseded by more modern coins and notes. BACK Al-Mustansirya University, Baghdad. Built in the mid-thirteenth century it was the most prominent university in the Islamic world in the Middle Ages. 5000 Dinar Note FACE Gully Ali Beg and its 800m waterfall. The 10km gully passes between Mount Kork and Mount Nwathnin, some 60km away from Shaqlawa. BACK The second century desert fortress of Al-Ukhether, Hejira. 10,000 Dinar Note FACE Abu Ali Hasan Ibn al-Haitham born Basrah in 965 A.D. His most important work is held to be a seven volume series on optics. He is said to have ‘invented’ the camera obscura. Also, an eminent physicist and mathematician he developed analytical geometry by establishing linkage between algebra and geometry. BACK Hadba Minaret, at the Great Nurid Mosque, Mosul, built 1172 A.D by Nurridin Zangi, the then Turkish ruler. The 59m-high minaret leans 8 feet off the perpendicular. Credited with writing the first code of law in human history he founded the First Dynasty of Babylon in 1700 BC, leading Babylonia into a period of great prosperity. While this is considered a new design, the Hammurabi vignette was used previously on the 1971, 5 dinar note. Sure would be nice to get a hold of one of those sets. It has a nice color photo of the new $20s on the front page, not to mention a David Harper editorial on the same subject. I was fully absorbed by the issue when I noticed that there was a story on the front page about 50 cent pieces (coins). I was offended and started mentally composing a protest letter to David Harper. Only then did I realize that this was not my Bank Note Reporter, but a Numismatic News. David, you are forgiven. I did fine a least a little military numismatics in the issue. A story reports that a Victoria Cross (earned by Lance Corp F. W. Holmes on August 26, 1914) was sold at auction in London for $133,900. Based on that I went to google where I thought that I would find a story about the sale. I am equally sure that if your friend only found two stars, that he wanted to keep on. Drat. Editor Dear Gram, The other day, I was able to get one of the new twenties from my bank. A customer had brought it in. The most disconcerting part about them, in my opinion, are the tiny yellow 20s on the back of the notes. When the teller took the note from the cash drawer (before I had a chance to examine it up close), I said to myself "How in the world did a new note in San Diego get TS (tropical stain) on it?" From a distance, this is exactly what the little yellow 20s look like. For those of you who have not spent any time in SE Asia, TS affects all types of paper and puts little brown or yellow spots on it; stamp collectors are quite familiar with TS. (When I moved back to the U.S. after 5 years in Asia, all my books had TS. Thankfully, I left my currency collection in the U.S.). Anyway, I just thought I would add my 2 cents.
