From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1033 Date: Wednesday, October 22, 2003 12:31 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1033 Wednesday October 22, 2003 National Museum of the U.S. Army (NMUSA) by The Master Sergeant Daniel The October 1, 2003 “The Washington Post” has an item; “Army Museum Effort Launched at Belvoir.” The item describes a ceremony on Fort Belvoir to activate that post as the host for the future NMUSA. A Project Development Center, to include staff, was also announced and the museum should be ready for the public in 2009. The planned site is on the northern end of the post and along U.S. Route 1. This will allow easy access to the museum without the public having to enter the main post and they are expecting one million visitors per year. The Army said the museum would not only inform but entertain and they are consulting with Universal Studios and Walt Disney Company for ideas. The Army’s Vice Chief of Staff, General John M. Keane said “We intend to set a new standard for museum design.” Starting over a year ago, I have written to the Army’s Center for Military History and the Army History Foundation (of which I am a member) volunteering myself and several Gramsters to assist, but I have unbelievably been ignored except for a brief email from someone at the Army History Foundation that I would be contacted. This has not happened, but I am not giving up. I do not want to go into political channels, but if I have to, I will contacts my Senators Allen and Warner, and Representative Davis, who probably has more influence on Northern Virginia matters. My proposal to the museum is that they have an area devoted to numismatics and it will include a complete set of MPC, military tokens, other military numismatic pieces, an old finance office with teller cages, medals and decorations, crests, etc. I want to also see an APO with many samples of military mail, to include military postal orders and other financial instruments, besides regular postal items. If I ever can get us in the door of this project, is there anyone interested in working on it? And if you have any ideas on how to get us in on the project, please contact me about them. If so, my email is Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== We strongly support Howard’s proposal. Beside our obvious bias, military numismatic items deserve recognition in military museums on their own merit. The strongest argument is that these items were there and used by virtually every participant in the campaign, operation, occupation, or exercise. The items served silently like so many who used them. Furthermore, these items were of great interest to the participants as demonstrated by the relatively large quantities that were brought home as souvenirs—often the only souvenirs. Finally, these items are relatively unrecognized in other museums. Howard, if you can get something started, the Gram supports you, and I am sure that Gramsters will jump on board. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Mr. Editor, What a FANTASTIC move by the ANA to change the exhibiting categories! Let's hope that the regional and state numismatic organizations catch on to this. Marcus Turner Dear Esteeemed Editor, Someone was asking for Iraqi contacts. There are several Iraqi members of IBNS and one or more of them has been sending me emails to buy the notes. I have just deleted them because they are of no interest to me, but an IBNS member can go to the web site at www.ibns.it and log in and see the membership list with email addresses. My wife is leaving me alone in Viet Nam in about 1 hour. I will be starting numismatics in the morning, and planning to be in Hanoi next week. I will be seeing one dealer there and several collectors, plus a UN worker friend from Australia and a couple of other folks if I can squeeze them in. The Master Sergeant Daniel Dear Gram: I received my first new $20s today, EA-A block, from an Engraver's and Printers Credit Union in DC. These were the only two they had-you would think if any place would have them it would be there, but in my week and a half of persistent inquires, this is it. The supposedly color-shifting ink, like Larry said, appears to be anything but. It looks copper colored to me as well, and does not shift. Matthew J. Friday Dear Gram, I cannot make it to Fest V, but please put me down for Fest VI. Danny Bingham Dear Gram, NOW are they war bonds?? I have acquired several bonds from the Junkers (JU88 +) and Henschel (some planes, Tiger Tank) Companies issued during the war. The Henschel bond was issued just as the Tiger was going into production. Do I hear a cracking sound in the "They Issued No War Bonds" Dike?
