Most of us would gladly make such a purchase without knowing anything else. A beginning MPC collector went to an estate sale recently. When faced with the above decision, he met the challenge and purchased the note. He did well, he got a Series 541 $10 certificate for his collection. When he got home and studied the note a little more, he discovered that he had found a replacement. The MPC book listed only 5 replacements! Five reported for five bucks. Sounds like a good deal. More study revealed that the replacement was from the first printing. The book listed no first printing replacements. The lucky collector called around inquiring about value and other aspects. It turns out that a first printing has been discovered since the publication of the book, but still for five bucks, not a bad deal. The collector sold the note for a few multiples of $5 to a replacement collector. He plans on attending a Fest where he will tell the story himself. See the note at this link. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/Side2.jpg =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== The last item that I bought at the militaria shop is a folded American Red Cross Guide to Calcutta for Servicemen. It is an 11x17 inch sheet folded in sixteenths. It is in two color (red and black) letterpress. I have found similar items for Shanghai, London and a few other places that had lots of American servicepersons during World War II. They are always interesting. The on that I found for Shanghai includes information on businesses (theaters, dance halls etc) for which emergency notes were issued. This is a great connection to make. I purchased this item without too much study. I noticed that there was no obvious way to date it to the war period, but I was confident that that was the period and that there would be a way. Often these items have information about foreign exchange which can be a good clue. This did not have the foreign exchange information, but it did give taxi and rickshaw prices in annas. I have studied the guide several times, but not seriously. Tonight I found the key information that I wanted. It was not at all hard since it is the very last line of the guide. It simply states: Pre-censored for mailing. So, just as I thought this is certainly from the war period. I have to admit that I do not know much about Americans in India during the war, but I hope to learn some more. You can expect to see an illustration of my new guide in the second edition of Remembered. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Just to add to the discussion, all US ration devices used during WWII whether they were coupons & stamps; tokens; certificates or checks, all were considered "currency" by the Office of Price Administration (OPA). Within the OPA, there was an Enforcement Division which included the Currency Protection Branch. They were charged with making available to certain select persons, specimens and data relating to the production and distribution of all genuine issues of Ration Currency by the Office of Price Administration. I have attached a copy of the 1st vebatium sheet of the Ration Currency Manual as well as a scan of an official OPA Bulletin mentioning "New Way to Handle Your Ration Currency." Happy collecting! Don Kolkman PS: If the files come zipped and you cannot open them, let me know and I'll send them seperately. Greetings Fred: I don't get to read the Gram on a daily basis and have just gotten caught up on 3 weeks worth. I have previously hinted at this, and will now be more specific and to the point. It would seem that it would be to every Gramsters benefit if there were two (2) Grams. The first version would be the complete version with all of the "boilerplate" items that one has to scroll through to see if one has missed anything ie: new donations, show schedule etc.....This version would run ONCE a week, or every forthnite or so. The frequency would be determined by the addition of "new mentions" The second version would be the daily version WITHOUT all the "boilerplate" items and just contain the "new stuff" ie: articles, editorial, letters etc. I believe that this type of change would be welcomed by most readers as a great time saver, and take a bit of pressure off. I realize that I have perhaps oversimplified things with my suggestion as I am not aware of the mechanics in getting the Gram out. Please give this thought or even invite others to put in their two cents scrip note worth. Mr. Doric Dear Gram, Just want to make you aware of a new book that has appeared in France. It covers the issues of the Vichy Government during the war years of 1939-1945. The author is M. Kleiber 54930 St. Firmin France (street address isn't available, but perhaps it is a small town and mail addressed to him will reach him) Title translated is: Seven years in the life of the French. "Sept annees de la vie des Francais" He covers all the "notes," good fors and documents issued during that trying time. It would appear that he goes into great detail in the listings as he does so in 200 pages!! I don't have a copy but naturally would welcome the chance to acquire same. Perhaps you can put one of your sleuths into tracking a couple of copies down. Please advise!! Best, Richard Dear Richard, Great news. Thanks for the tip. I sure would like a copy of this book. Can anyone help? Editor Dear Gram, I gave our club president and coin show organizer a challenge coin. Well, Monday evening we had our monthly meeting. And as I walked in, he had the audacity to challenge me!!!! Of course I rose to the occasion. I was extremely pleased that the gestrue had been appreciated and he had bought in to the culture. Who knows where this might lead. Warner =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== PCDA National and World Paper Money Convention.
