In the last week I had a similar, wonderful, experience. At my local show I first bought a more or less routine MPC replacement not attributed as such. It was a Series 472 5 center (first printing). Then I looked around some more and found another dealer with some MPC for sale. He had a nice uncirculated pair of 5 and 10 cent 471s. You know, the red ones. Did I mention that the notes were real nice unc? Anyway, as you can imagine by now one of them (the 10 cent) was a replacement. I asked the price and paid what was asked. Replacements have gotten terribly cheap or the fellow did not know replacements. The note now belongs to a dealer in New York. I suspect that it is on its way to a discerning collector. I sure learned that it pays to go to local shows. Analysis of the Vietnam Foreign Trade Bank Certificates Trung T. Nguyen I have this note for a while but had never thought of its meanings, significances, or uses. Its appearance is almost non-noticeable. The front is printed Ngân Hà ng Ngoại ThÆ°Æ¡ng Việt Nam (Ngân Hà ng = bank, Ngoại ThÆ°Æ¡ng = foreign commercial or foreign trading, Việt Nam = how the country name really is). The denomination is mÆ°á»?i đồng (10 đồng). There is a letter “Bâ€? with unknown significance right after the word “đồng.â€? The back appears blank at first glance, but close examination shows a building, probably a picture of the foreign trade bank, and its logo. At the present currency exchange rate (15,570 đồng = $US1 reference: official exchange rate posted by the Nhân Dân Daily Newspaper, the official publication of the Vietnamese Communist Party on October 25, 2003), the certificate is not worth 1/10 of a US penny. Why would any foreign trade banks accept the seemingly worthless pieces of paper? Was the certificates actually used in foreign trade? In addition, the serial number only has seven digits. The maximum number of certificates of this type is 9,999,999. That would make all ten millions certificates (minus one) collectively worth US$6422.60 at the current exchange rate. The amount above sure can buy a nice set of MPCs, but for foreign trading it is totally insignificant. Perhaps this was a hoax or a mistake of the government. It is interesting to know that the amount of US dollars paid for my certificate is worth 62,280 actual certificates. Well, we all paid hundreds of dollars for a 5 cent piece before. Any thoughts from any one? =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I am feeling more than a little guilty for not extending editorial concerns to Gramsters in California who may be battling the fires. We have heard from David Klinger that he is fine and not in jeopardy. I believe that with confidence I can offer the best hopes for any Gramsters caught in this terrible situation. I do not want to diminish the main concern which is the life and well-being of Gramsters (and everyone else for that matter), but the fires also bring to mind the medium on which most of our attention is directed—paper. Our paper friends are certainly the most fragile thing possible (well not quite) when thinking about fire. Many notes and collections have been lost to fires large and small. Therefore it is not a bad idea to consider the fire situation regarding you collection. I just thought of one brief story that I may have told before. The branch bank where I have my safe deposit boxes burned to the ground about three years ago. To the ground in about 12 minutes. It was amazing. Pictures of the blaze are in the lobby. You can go see them if you arrive early for the Fest (it is a two minute walk from Fest HQ).
