From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1043 Date: Friday, November 07, 2003 12:26 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1043 Thursday November 6, 2003 UK WWII Chits and Other Things By David Klinger Regarding the club chit booklet with the cover text reading: US Army Officer's Club A.B.A. 10/- . It is logical to expect that the chits were used somewhere in the UK. I did an Internet search, and found many sites related to US forces stationed in the UK during WW II. One thing struck me was that the Brits really believed in the concept of dispersing their facilities. One site states that there were over 900 locations/bases used by the US in the UK. On one site related to the US 8th Army Air Force, was a bulletin board on which I asked what the A.B.A stood for. The answer came back that the base was an RAF installation at Abbots Bromley Airfield (A.B.A.) . During WW II The US 8th Army Air Corps was co-located there with the RAF, as was the case at many bases throughout the UK. The small town of Abbots Bromley is located near Stafford (about 35 miles North of Birmingham). The airstrip was a small grass strip, often referred to by the Brits as a farmstrip. Nothing remains of the RAF base today, although there is still a grass airstrip there. About 30 miles West of Stafford, near the Welsh border, is the somewhat larger town of Shrewsbury where the chits were printed by Wilding & Sons Ltd. In the course of this research, I found a list of the primary printers which were used by the British military during the WW II period. The abbrevations may be of some use to others, because often the printers name is only shown in abbreviated form on these club chits and other printed material. The primary [WW II] British military printers: A.P.& S. Ltd. Alabaster, Pasmore & Sons Ltd. G.C. Ltd. Greycaine Ltd. H.M.S.O. His Majesty's Stationery Office H & S Ltd. Harrison & Sons Ltd. K.H.K. Keliner, Hudson & Kearns P.L.H. & Co. Percy Lund, Humphries & Co. W.C.& S Ltd. William Clowes & Sons Ltd. W.O.P. War Office Press W.& S. Ltd. Wilding & Sons Ltd. The web page I found most useful is cited below. Included is an extensive list of the UK bases used by the US 8th and 9th Air Forces. It also includes links to history, pictures, videos, and even music of the WW II era - a very good web site. Maybe Major Glenn Miller performed at A.B.A. and used the club chits you found? And, maybe it was in one of the five pubs in the small hamlet of Abbots Bromley where a local man came up with the saying about what's wrong with the Americans: "they are overpaid, oversexed, and over here." http://www.455th.ukpc.net/tomfeise/8thusaaf/bases2.htm =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Sorry about the late and missing Grams. Judy and I made a short vacation trip about which I will tell you more tomorrow and probably the days to follow. I had expected to be able to publish the Gram while on the road, but internet access was more difficult than I had anticipated. Between Monday morning and Thursday morning, I was not able to reasonably get on line. Thursday morning I got a little time at the Pigeon Forge, TN library (nice place but no MPC books). I had over 150 spams filling my boxes which contributed to the problem of publishing a Gram. I am sure that many of you sent messages that were bounced for lack of space. Please send them again! Just today we visited the Tennessee aviation museum in (I think) Severeville, TN. It is a nice museum with more numismatic material than usually found in such places. One item about which I am skeptical is a Medal of Honor purported to be Jimmy Doolittle’s. I was particularly interested to see the award certificate. I like the certificates (a lot). They are much more rare than the medals. I am hesitant to pass judgement without being able to examine the piece closely, but through the glass the certificate looks to be a copy at best or a fantasy at worst. I could not believe that neither the signature of the secretary of war or president were manuscript signatures. Instead they were both written in the same style as the balance of the certificate (meaning the part that is not printed). I know that I am sticking my neck out here. I do this in the hope that someone more knowledgeable than I on such things will comment (Colin, are you there?) =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, As I suggested a LONG time ago, if you want more people to use the for sale & wanted sections of the gram, you have to move them closer to the beginning of the gram. I (& I'm sure others) never bother reading past the column, editorial & letters.
