From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1048--MPC w/matched SNs Date: Thursday, November 13, 2003 12:33 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1048 Thursday November 13, 2003 Matched Pairs By Doug Bell Another matching serial number pair has been found via the MPC database. This matching pair is a 481 50 cent and a 681 $20 note SN # 02851966. There have been two such discoveries made in the past month. I suspect that several more will be forthcoming as more notes are input. There are now 17871 notes in the database (radar number), as of 1300 central time 11/11/03. There have been more than 2000 notes input in the past week. It is very important to remember that when inputting your notes that the database will notify you of matches. This matchup can make a common note a very special one. Keep in mind that there will be more matches and some day even a triplicate. I think Bill McNease was the first one to point this out and he was the first to make a match from the database. Although there are several matches that were married before the database, one being Fred’s discovery in the replacement database he maintains. Also there was/is a matching pair of a replacement and regular issue same denomination and series. There is now a new emerging anomaly starting to appear with matches being made “What is the most desirable match?” With the known matches: 1. 2 replacements 661 20$ and 50 cents SNs 00768992 illustrated on page 55 of the MPC book. 2. 1 replacement and 1 regular issue same notes (Down South collection) http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams\images\matchds.jpg 3. A 651 5$ and a 651 50 cent same series not together yet just identified the 50 cent notes whereabouts is AWOL A01426884A 4. 471 and 681 Bill McNease http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/mcneasepar I feel that these 4 are of the upper echelon of matches. 3 more to mention: 5. 541 10 cent and a 692 50 cent Harold Kroll http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/MATCH%20PAR.jpg 6. 481 50 cent and 681 20 $ And last but not least: 7. An unreported triple match has been reported but not confirmed. Bill McNease has volunteered to head up a committee to input notes into the database. Envisioned are volunteers to input notes on a continuing basis in a coordinated effort. A person would input only his favorite series and possibly rotate this on a weekly or monthly cycle. Users would be given a separate account where their id can be kept separate from their personal id. If there is any one who would like to volunteer for this assignment the rewards could be great--ie finding a matched note. Your input is greatly appreciated. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I found an interesting little group of papers today. I am not sure when I purchased this group, but I believe that it was at a militaria show in the last year. The papers are from a World War II veteran who served overseas, but I cannot determine where he served based upon these paeprs. The first document (probably the one that attracted me to the group) is a 1942 Soldier’s Individual Pay Record, pay book. I always watch for these. This one is well worn and does not contain particularly interesting information. However, it did include a nice chit. The chit is for one ice cream. The issuing authority is A. A. C., presumably Army Air Corps. Another chit was in the group, but not in the pay book. It is a locally fabricated chit. The text is: SPECAIL DINNER PASS / FOR FIRST MEAL ONLY OF ALL / PERSONNEL RETURNING FROM OVERSEAS. The meal was to be served in mess hall number 3 and he initials GAC authenticate the chit. Unfortunately, I cannot find any way to estimate the location where the chit was issued. Of particular interest is a duplicate of Form 29-6 which is an authorization of class B allotment for purchase of war savings bonds. This is interesting enough in itself. However, this one is particularly nice because the buyer of the bond had signed up for Plan 12. The printed form allowed for plans 1 through 11. Plan 12 elections had to be typed on the form. Plan 12 called for a monthly bond purchase of $7.50—a $10 bond. Yes, this fellow had signed up for the $10, soldier, bond. Unfortunately, none of the bonds were included in the group. Almost certainly they were redeemed decades ago. Two blank forms were included. You will recognize the form number of these two forms—1040. Yes, these are tax forms for 1943 and 1944. The interesting part is the name of the form/tax. The forms were for filing “individual and victory tax.” Tomorrow I will tell you about the most significant item in the group. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, In response to "Scissors," any note that shows even a hint of having been trimmed, when examined under the right magnification by an experienced observer, will be detected as a doctored note. Editor Friends, Some who received my email last week thought that my night with Theatre Under the Influence was last Wednesday. I don't know what left that impression, but it is Friday the 14th running through into Saturday the 15th. My time up with "What is it Like to be Joe Boling?" is still 12:25am Saturday (a Friday late-night slot). I will also be doing Kipling in the Saturday 5:00am hour, and maybe even talking about counterfeit foreign paper money in the 6:00am hour. Come once and stay until breakfast! See the press release below for the names of other exciting performers who will be participating.
