From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1049 (back to the presses!) Date: Monday, November 17, 2003 3:59 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1049 Monday November 17, 2003 Italian AMC error By David Seelye At the Dallas 2003 Lyn Knight auction of segment of R.A. Medina's extensive MPC-AMC and related collection, I outbid a prominent Ohioan collector sitting in my row for a lot of two Series 1943A 10 Lira notes in UNC. The most interesting note was what I would call an eye bender. The black printing was prominently doubled, lending an eye-catching appeal to me. Errors have always called my name when the opportunity to acquire the notes has occurred. And this was no exception. While I buy and sell MPC and AMC, I do collect/hoard notes of interest. I collect MFC especially serial #1's, errors, and replacements, specimen traveler's checks, UNESCO coupons, Series 641 $10.00 replacement by position number. This note fell into the realm of, "I do not want to keep it, but I wanted to have it pass through my hands." You know, I don't have it now, but I did at one time syndrome. The serial number A43553450A has no great significance other than to say in the middle of the run an error slipped past the inspectors. Now AMC errors are in general quite scarce. How many sheets of this error made it past is open to interpretation. I have been "doing" MPC/AMC and related for about 4 years. I look at a lot of notes here and in Europe. Fred Schwan, Richard Medina, Leo May just to name some of the more prominent dealer/collectors have been looking for this type of error for many, many years. With just one note showing up, the conclusion is that just one sheet slipped past. I felt very comfortable in knowing I had a unique note. One note from a sheet that has survived. That in and of itself is interesting, but for me to take time to write a MPCGram article you know there must be more. And there is. Yesterday I received in the mail from Great Britain a Italy AMC series 1943A 10 Lira A51540612A in EF. The note looks like an UNC from the face, but you can see two folds where it was saved for a while in someone's wallet. It is another similar black print shift error! By comparison the RAM piece has the light image shifted to the left. The new piece has the light image shifted to the right. It is an interesting pair for sure! http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/italyerror.jpg =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== To my surprise a small piece of paper in the group under discussion turned out to be very significant. It is about one fifth of a standard sheet of typing paper. The text was duplicated onto the sheet as many times as it would fit. Then the sheet was cut making 5-6 messages. Here is the complete test of the sheet. FINANCE OFFICE, U. S. ARMY FORT BENJAMIN HARRISON, INDIANA This is to acknowledge receipt of your claim for unused leave, and to advise you that payment should be forthcoming within the next 60 days; however, it is anticipated that the initial supply of bonds will not be received by this office until 1 October 1946. It is requested that no further communication regarding you claim be sent to this office, except to correct your claim or to report a change of address. Your discharge papers are returned herewith, as they have served the needs of this office. Your check and/or bond will be mailed under separate cover at a later date. Finance officer, U.S. Army Wow, what a cool item. This notice was sent to our veteran in response to his claim for payment for unused leave. It points out that bonds (Armed Forces Leave Bonds) were be issued for this purpose. AFLBs were first reported in WWII Remembered. They have been discussed in the Gram from time to time since then, but this is the first document from the period about the bonds that I have heard of except for the bonds themselves. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, The recently found Series 471 10 Cent is now residing in it's new home in the collection of a prominent West Coast MPC collector ( who should take the time to drive to the MPCFest V next year). After several express mail shipping's, many email messages and telephone calls, a trade was agreed to. A key part of the trade was the inclusion of several LOGIX notes as well as MFC from the recent WestFest. David Dear David, I am sorry that I delayed your letter. The proud new owner of the note has already reported the acquisition. Congratulations on obtaining some MFC!
