Neither is Larry Lee (recent media reports say that he will be there through the opening of the Mexican exhibit this week, but he departed some ten days ago). At the moment, there is no collections manager. Tiffanie Bueschel has been moved out of the museum to a supervisory position over museum, library, education (and I believe conventions). Before simply shipping notes, make sure someone at ANA is prepared to receive them. At the moment I have no clue who that would be. More new reports from Beijing. A release 16 exists for the Manshu Chochiku saiken series. This will be SB166. Among the government guaranteed bonds, the North China Development bond has now been observed in 1944 releases denominated in FRB currency. This circumstance, together with the fact that the vignette is a Peking building, lead me to the conclusion that this issue should have been listed in the FRB pages. There is presently no space in the numbering system for such a move; Fred and I will have to discuss how this will be handled. The FRB-denominated issue has been given SB numbers 771-800. So far releases #1 and #3 have been seen, in 100 yuan denominations; the release #1 piece says that four denominations were produced (100, 500, 1000, 10000 yuan). That omits the 5000 step of the earlier (yen-denominated) bonds. Another new find is a 1945-dated Inner Mongolian note with a conversion clause specifying Central Bank of Manchou notes. This is reported to have been issued explicitly to redeem the CBM notes and remove them from circulation. If so, it is a strange way to make a currency reform. In light of the fact that CBM notes are referenced, I suppose this will also have to find its way into the next edition of SB. This will entail a new country entry: Inner Mongolia in the Allied section. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Sorry about missing last weekend. I was out of town. I had every intention of getting the Gram out, but just could not solve all of the electronic problems. I have to get wireless. I have my eyes on a solution. Will of course let you know. On a different electronic problem. This morning I blocked as spam an email address based primarily on the subject of the email. When I realized that I should not have blocked it, I went into the manager for blocked addresses. There I found that I had blocked (so far) 60 addresses. I was surprised to find that there is a limit (on Yahoo) of 100 addresses but I was more surprised to find that I had blocked several regular and important correspondents. Joe Boling and others had been blocked! Of course I was surprised and promptly fixed my earlier mistakes. Possibly some missing Grams have been caused by a similar problem. You might want to check your blocked list. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Is there any formal club or society for collectors of MPC, etc.? Thanks again, Little Lee Dear Lee, Club? Yes. Formal? No. The fraternity of MPC (and similar items) collectors has been one of the strongest for many years. We have M2C2 (Military Money Collectors Club), the Gram, the Fest and the Summer Seminar, not to mention mini Fests, an auction and other events. However, I hesitate to say that we have an organization (implying that we are organized) or that we have a club implying officers, dues and the like. We are different collectors so we go at it differently (like the Apple Corporation slogan). No dues, no rules. Editor Dear Esteeemed Editor, I just finished packing my suitcases but I still have to pack my carry-on bags with my numismatic purchases. One of the suitcases is going to be overweight and I will have to pay a charge again to get it on the plane. I will do that in the morning because it is midnight, I am the only one up in my house, and I am tired. The trip was pretty good concerning MPC. I think about 600 pieces were added to the database and about a dozen were purchased by Gramsters. My "military" purchases were limited and mostly in the RVN and NVA areas. But I did pick up two parts of a worn plate to print the Banque de l'Indochine 20 piastres note of WWII!!!!!! I will send the pieces to Joe Boling for evaluation once I am back in the USA. They were a surprise offer to me this morning at the stamp "club" meeting at the old Coffee Museum. Tomorrow morning I am headed for Singapore. I have confirmed four of six appointments but I would like to get the last two confirmed too so the trip will be very productive.
