Yes, SIX! We are also approaching 20,000 notes, yes TWENTY THOUSAND MPC recorded by serial number by the collecting community. This is a great achievement. The new pairs seem to be the direct result of one dealer entering a large number of notes. Many notes remain in many collections to be entered. Every entry is important and might lead to another match and ultimately to a triple pairing. Some enhancements are being developed both in software and in procedures by project coordinators Bill McNease and Robert Drew. If you have ideas, please sent them to me or to the Gram, but in any event, enter your notes! What three step rule? Bill McNease I had an opportunity to visit a noted (in his mind anyway) MPC collector recently. Upon entering his home/office I noted that he was wearing a T-shirt and gym shorts (with no pockets). I knew that I had scored on a free drink via the challenge coin. Or so I thought. He (the challengee) said, "I invoke the three step rule," took three steps and picked up his challenge coin. He did have a challenge coin on his key ring on his desk that was hidden under a stack of books and papers but he didn't know it. It appeared that he had his own "Black Hole of Port Clinton" or at least a close replica of it. I did not get my drink even though I did question the "Three Step Rule." My question is this--who dreamed up this "Three Step Rule" anyway? Since the rules for the challenge coin are that there are no rules, this is notice to all readers of the Gram that if you do not physically have your coin on your person, you owe me a drink. If you are not a Gram reader then you owe me a drink for not being a Gram reader. You will be challenged. Beware. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I just wrote a story for the IBNS journal where I talked about the success of the MPC database for research and fun. I believe that this is just the start of good things from computer and Internet technology. They will continue to change our hobby. It is certainly hard to predict the extent or even direction of the changes, but I believe that they will be for the good. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, This is an open letter to all Gramsters especially the "Young Ones," I have always favored and recommended that you should retire as early as you can. DO NOT wait for the BIG MONEY or that BIG PROMOTION. Once you get where you CAN retire DO IT. Every year you wait you are giving that year to SOMEONE else. We all have made lists of 'things I'll do after I retire'. For most of us who have lead a 'normal' life let me warn you that as you get older things like physical ability and health have a habit of going down hill at an alarming pace. Editor Dear Editor, Thanks for your Gram #1048. The first one since #1025. I hope they will keep coming, I have been missing them for a month. When I wrote to Doug he asked me to contact hotmail, because he thought it was a hotmail error, that I did not get any Grams. I did so, but Hotmail has never responded, so I do not know more than I did. I have a question for you relating to the MPC database. Do you only want notes entered, that is owned by a known person, or do you also accept entry of notes seen at shows and/or in auction rooms? So far I have not entered any notes, but I have a list of MPCs, that I have seen at these places. Flemming Dear Flemming, The timing on your question is perfect. You do not need to be the owner of a MPC to enter it in the database. If you have seen it, please enter it. Indeed, a few collectors who dislike (hate) computers have sent list of the data to friends who have entered it. It is helpful to enter something in the remarks about the location. This is especially true if the note was seen in a public place like an auction or even a dealer’s inventory. I sure hope that your grams are getting through now.
