From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: Gram Newsletter 1055 Date: Monday, November 24, 2003 10:55 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1055 Monday November 24, 2003 BNR MPC Special Issue The leading paper money publication—Bank Note Reporter (BNR)—is honoring the military money hobby with a special edition again in 2004. The February issue of the paper will have editorial material and advertising featuring MPC and military money. This is the third year that the paper has honored military money collectors in this way. The string started with an underground special issue in 2002. Without fanfare, but with cooperation from deep editor in Iola, Gramsters kidnapped an issue and made it into a special MPC issue. In 2003 the status was elevated to an official special issue, but coordination was minimal. This year all parties plan to make it a very special issue indeed. You can help. If you are a dealer, run an advertisement for MPC and military money (advertising deadline 6 February, see Gram calendar). If you are a collector, you can help in several ways. You can write an article (see below) or letter to the editor. At a minimum, you can buy something from one of the advertisements. There is nothing like reinforcing an appropriate behavior! To coordinate your efforts for the special issue contact David Kranz (dkranz@krause.com) for editorial matters and Mary Roloff (mroloff@krause.com) for advertising matters. St. Louis Report By David Seelye While the time I spent at the PCDA show was short, about 3 1/5 hours, it was an excellent investment of time. I was able to sell a rare replacement to a collector (report to follow in a few days). I traded another to a longtime collector. And I attended the Lyn Knight auction with some success there too. I did acquire for my MFC collection a set of MFC from Baltimore. Prior to this I had only seen scans of the notes. I also acquired a set of WestFest specimen notes. In addition, I also acquired a type set of MFC from MPCFest IV, Memphis, ANA Summer Seminar, and Dallas. These will be prime trading material for the Wonderful notes I expect at MPCFest V. At the Lyn Knight auction I found another piece for my UNESCO collection. While I have many Specimen notes I only had three issued pieces. I acquired a $3.00 from 1970 issued in Ghana. A prize for sure. While the MPC section was not as strong as the CPMX or Dallas offerings, I did manage to spend some money. Arguably the "best" piece was an elusive Series 692 $20.00 Second printing in GEM UNC. But the main reason I wanted to attend the auction was for the collection of POW chits. While I tried to buy them all, I was not successful due to persistent bidding of Neil Shafer, who was representing a collector. Neil won several lots at record, or close to it for POW chits. But I will try and identify him in the February issue of Bank Note Reporter. I will be running a 3 page ad in the MPC issue (It deadlines on January 9, 2004, so plan for any ads or articles accordingly) that will feature the largest listing at fixed prices in recent time, of POW chits. The completing of Larry Ski's new book should spur even more interest in this field. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== We are excited about the announcement of the BNR special MPC issue. We have entered the advertising deadline in the Gram calendar and are planning on writing a special article for that issue. We are considering other ways of supporting the issue, but we need your ideas too. If you have ideas you can write the Krause folks or to us here at the Gram. In any case, we should work together on this. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gramsters, Received the I.S.Wright (in Australia) Postal Bid Sale #153 catalog the other day and it has 6 Australian War Savings Certificates up for bid. There are 3 one pound and 3 fifty pound certificates. Lots 8165 thru 8169. The sale closes 17 Dec 2003. For specifics email ausnumis@netconnect.com.au. These are SB-535 or 541 and SB-538 or 544. Steve Jinks Dear Editor, Was "Gram 1052 St. Louis report" actually supposed to be #1053?? Just wondering... Jay in Garrison, TX Dear Gramsters, In a rare occurrence, the MPCGram gave out a bonus issue to subscribers on Friday by sending out a second Gram 1052. The first Gram 1052 dealt with new matches in the MPC database while the second one gave a report on the Lyn Knight auction. When asked by reporters about this generosity, the Editor was speechless. Sparky Watson Dear Jay and Sparky, You guys are just too sharp. I just cannot get anything past you. Would you believe that it was just a test to see if you were paying attention. No, ok, so I got confused when publishing the Gram from our St Louis office. Editor Dear Editor, The St Louis report was my first gram in months....thanks bunches! Cheers, Colin Dear Colin, I guess that only duplicate numbers get through to you. Seriously, I cannot explain it, but please complain if your Grams stop again.
