From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPC newsletter for Tuesday (#1056) Date: Tuesday, November 25, 2003 10:33 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1056 Tuesday November 25, 2003 Research and Finds By Joe Boling Regarding Mark Watson's report of new serial numbers for Indian war savings certificates (gram 1054), four of the five data points he reported are new information. Do not assume that just because it has been nine or ten years since we wrote some page of SB (such as the Indian pages), that we have seen lots of new material for that page and that your holdings will be stale news. In many cases the listings in SB were based on very limited observations (you will find only one SN listed for a catalog entry, or a range consisting of two SN close together). Yes, we have seen lots of new material, and we have many new data points for the next edition, but think of how many collectable items are covered by the book, and remember that, despite our reputations, we do not really own everything that is listed. We NEED your assistance, and, as Fred said, I am going to Ohio in three weeks to do some serious work on the next edition (as serious as THE BOSS's Christmas plans will allow). Let us have your observations before we get together, please. Not much new to report this week. I bought five notes in the St Louis sale - two genuine Brazilian notes to go with fakes I already have, two new fakes (one Czech, one German), and one note for my Seattle nationals collection. I am trying to get one of each charter number and title for Seattle, nineteen items - this one puts me nicely over the 50% mark, at eleven pieces. I actually have thirteen, but that is because I have large- and small-sized notes for two banks. I was tantalized by the idea of building a short type set (at least one of each national design series, without regard to denomination). That is not technically feasible, because Seattle had no banks that issued original charter notes (the brown backs are the earliest - eight banks issued them). But every series since then is represented by at least two banks. Unfortunately, many of these are impossible to find - they issued only $50 and $100 notes after the brown backs, or had outstanding circulations like $630 in 1916 or $530 in 1910. One wonders about the utility of having only high-denomination notes in the period 1890-1925. Several of these banks are "unreported" in the major national catalogs (including the bank I just bought, though Lyn hints that another has been seen, but not by him). I am going to be interested in the grade, since I have not seen the back (Lyn's new web site does not show backs yet), and the grade is described as VG-fine, with "several internal tears and an edge split" (which looks to be about a one-inch tear into the portrait, in the catalog illustration). Even though I will no doubt fuss about the grade, this is one of those cases where grade is not a consideration - it may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. On the other hand, why is it important that I have one of each charter and title for Seattle? Why do collectors collect? Corrections to BNR special edition story The story about the special MPC/military money issue of the Bank Note Reporter had several mistakes. The deadline for the issue is January 6 (not February). To coordinate your efforts for the special issue contact David Kranz (kranzd@krause.com) for editorial matters and Mary Roloff (roloffm@krause.com) for advertising matters. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== There were plenty of good challenge opportunities in St. Louis, but I am not aware of any drinks delivered. Neil Shafer demonstrated the best challenge coin technique. When challenged he promptly and smoothly pulled out his change holder that he carries all of the time and withdrew his coin. Joel did not do as well. He had to fumble in at least twenty pockets, bags, boxes and assorted container, but ultimately did produce it. Now I wonder if there should be a time limit on producing the coin. David Seelye and Lyn Knight met the challenge although Lyn is hiding a secret embarrassment. Mel Steinberg seemed a little ill at ease while challenges were going on in his presence. I did not know that he is the possessor of a challenge coin so I did not challenge him and felt that his body language was from being left out. Actually, that pleased me a little because I would like to see him come to the Fest and earn a challenge coin. Later in the hotel restaurant where, much to my chagrin, he trounced me in a game of chess he told a different story. He does have a challenge coin. Furthermore, he was confident that he had it because he had deposited it in the bag that he carries to shows. He the proceeded to demonstrate, but he had to really dig in the bag complete with mutterings that he was sure that it was there. Finally, he produced it which I took as a challenge and produced mine. On Friday I awarded Jim Downey a challenge coin for all of his good work on the Gram and as a way of suggesting (pressuring) that he should come to the Fest. You can never tell when you will see a Fester/challenge coin holder. The only solution is to carry yours all of the time. If you do not have one yet, well, come to the Fest! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Is this strictly an MPC issue or does it include other aspects of military numismatics? Marcus Dear Marcus, Well, there are no rules. To me it is like MPCGram and MPCFest, we really mean all military money. Editor Dear Editor: Please make your readers aware of a note that I have for sale on eBay. It is a Seamen's Overseas Service $1. Series 3, item #2205757520 with a closing date of 12/03. Thank you. Mr. Doric Dear Mr. Doric, I do not think that I can allow such crass commercialism sneak into the hi-brow letters section. Sorry. Editor Dear Editor, The ad deadline for the February issue of the Bank Note Reporter cannot be 6 February. THIMK. Joe Dear Editor, There is a good reason to enter your serial numbers into the MPC data base located at www.papermoneyworld.net. I just received the automatic email notification from the database indicating that I had both notes! Series 461 5 Cents Serial number A05576472A Position 26 Choice UNC and a Series 471 10 Cents B05576472B Position 26 in Fine. You can see them at: http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/matched.jpg David Dear David, Way cool. Now I suggest that you put them up for sale in the Gram! Alternatively, you can put a price on the pair in the database itself. That is one of the big features of this system.
