From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: Thanksgiving Greetings from MPC Gram staff and Gram 1058 Date: Thursday, November 27, 2003 9:44 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1058 Thurday November 27, 2003 Italian AMC error By David Seelye At the Dallas 2003 Lyn Knight auction of segment of R.A. Medina's extensive MPC-AMC and related collection, I outbid a prominent Ohioan collector sitting in my row for a lot of two Series 1943A 10 Lira notes in UNC. The most interesting note was what I would call an eye bender. The black printing was prominently doubled, lending an eye catching appeal to me. Errors have always called my name when the opportunity to acquire the notes has occurred. And this was no exception. While I buy and sell MPC and AMC, I do collect/hoard notes of interest. I collect MFC especially serial #1's, errors, and replacements, specimen traveler's checks, UNESCO coupons, Series 641 $10.00 replacement by position number. This note fell into the realm of, "I do not want to keep it, but I wanted to have it pass through my hands." You know, I don't have it now, but I did at one time syndrome. The serial number A43553450A has no great significance other than to say in the middle of the run an error slipped past the inspectors. Now AMC errors are in general quite scarce. How many sheets of this error made it past is open to interpretation. I have been "doing" MPC/AMC and related for about 4 years. I look at a lot of notes here and in Europe. Fred Schwan, Richard Medina, Leo May just to name some of the more prominent dealer/collectors have been looking for this type of error for many, many years. With just one note showing up, the conclusion is that just one sheet slipped past. I felt very comfortable in knowing I had a unique note. One note from a sheet that has survived. That in and of itself is interesting, but for me to take time to write a MPCGram article you know there must be more. And there is. Yesterday I received in the mail from Great Britain an Italy AMC series 1943A 10 Lira A51540612A in EF. The note looks like an UNC from the front, but you can see two folds where it was saved for a while in someone's wallet. It's another similar black print shift error! By comparison the RAM piece has the light image shifted to the left. The new piece has the light image shifted to the right. It is an interesting pair for sure! =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== First let me use my exalted position here at the Gram to wish all of you, your families and friends and very happy Thanksgiving. It is a wonderful holiday that can be enjoyed by all. I do have a few more comments on the St Louis auction. These things should have been said promptly, but then look who you have as editor. Most of you know from reading Lyn’s comment in the auction catalog that Eric Knight has joined the firm full time. The first thing that he did was to go to auctioneer school. He called his first auction at St Louis and the very first item that he sold was a lot of MPC (Series 461 to be exact). If I had had half a brain, I would have bought that lot. Eric could have autographed one or more of the notes or at least the holders. I do not know who bought it other than it was bidder 611 (I think). If you bought that lot (#1 of course) will you sell me the 5 center? The entire lot? At least the serial numbers are recorded so the notes might be found again! I should mention that Eric did a good job too. He tried to bail out after 100 or so lots, but Lyn made him do a full hour and 100 lots. Congratulations to the Knight family. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!!!..... Gary Lee Dear Editor and Mr. Doric, While I do not have plans on which note will be number 30,000 in the data base (yet), by the number of notes currently listed (22,096) it should not be long until it is revealed. Like you, I am working on listing my current inventory on the database. While I had planned on issuing a massive fixed price list #25 with everything in my inventory listed just after the PCDA Show, I decided to input my data. The new listing will go to my mailing list before the FUN show, then to the Bank Note Reporter as a 3 page ad in the MPC/Military Money issue. So far I have 3266 notes listed. I would like to finish up listing this weekend, but that may be a bit optimistic. Now I must admit I was interested in the number of serial number matches found in relationship to notes in the database. And I did find a few matches. But at what point will the 3 serial number match be found is an interesting question. It seemed like when the count went from 18k to 22k there were 4 new matches So anybody care to guess at what number of notes entered in the MPC data base will the triple match be found? David Dear Steamed Freditor, Nice Gram- Joel's auction coverage was just dandy (am I prejudiced?) and glad to see you mentioned Lyn Knight's "girls." In fact, they are the reason I am writing, because they not only help show lots before auction sessions, they stay up after the end of each auction session way past any of us reconciling, gathering for pickup and everything else needed for the next morning's activities, at times to 3 a.m. It's a fine idea to give them challenge coins and include them in the fun, but we should realize that they do work hard and well to facilitate all we do there, so let's not forget it. Kudos to them all!!
