It adds some details to the Newfoundland discussion. The personal touch is always exciting. Says Larry: this reminded me of a long forgotten item I picked up in a little show in Florida almost 10 years ago. It was a check issued to two gentlemen for what I am pretty sure was work building an air base in Newfoundland. I have attached two scans showing the face and back of this check. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/Newfoundland%20Check%20Back.jpg http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/Newfoundland%20Check%20Front.jpg Notice the heading that says Department of Public Works, Army Base Sub-Account and it is dated Aug 15, 1942. (St. Johns is the capital of Newfoundland.) The real clue here is the light stamp on the back which is dated Sep 28 1942 which is earlier than the darker stamp which is dated Oct 2 1942 or the green stamp dated Oct 3 1942 (notice upside-down 3). To me that means that the check was cashed on Sep 28 1942 at Stephenville, Newfoundland. Stephenville is the location of a very famous U.S. base that construction was started on in April 1941 and turned over to the Air Transport Command on Sep 1, 1943. So the dates fit. This base was originally called Stephenville Air Base, but on June 23, 1948, was renamed Ernest Harmon Air Force Base after Captain Ernest Emery Harmon, a U.S, Army Air Corps ace who was killed in an air crash in 1933. Many of us old SAC pilots that flew across the pond in the 60s remember that our tankers came out of Harmon and of course Harmon was our divert base if we missed a refueling. I remember spending a couple of days there in 1961(?) when our tanker lost an engine and we had to land and refuel our B-47 before heading for England. Unfortunately the weather closed in on us and we had to spend almost two full days there. Thanks, Larry! =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I did not get much numismatic done on turkey day and the prospects for the rest of the weekend are not great. I do have some research books in a briefcase that I am going to take with me when I take Judy shopping. I hope that I get an opportunity between toting packages to study them (the books). I have been spending a lot of time recently studying Das Papiergeld im besetszen Deutscland 1945 bis 1949 (the Paper Money of the German Occupation 1945-1949) by Michael H. Schöne. There is a tremendous amount of information in this book. You should expect to see some reports generated by this book. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor: I am a member of a military reunion organization called the POVA which means Psychological Operations Veterans Association. We are primarily a reunion organization. We have reunion every two years (the next will be at Ft. Brag, NC). Anyone who in any way was connected to PSYOPS Psychological Operations is welcome including wives, widows, former and current active duty and Reserve or Guard members. By the way we have many good displays of PSYOPS propaganda and the like at the reunion. I plan to display some MPC next reunion. Now to the point. We have under consideration merging our organization and two other organizations into a "regimental" organization. If any of our MPC members have had this experience, and would like to share it, their experience would be helpful to me.
