From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: Disney Certificates your Gram 1069 Date: Friday, December 12, 2003 8:58 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1069 Friday December 12, 2003 Financing War - WWII Walt Disney Certificates Warner Talso David Klinger has called our attention to a contribution to the war bond effort by the Walt Disney Company. I want to digress and discuss this in more detail. Recall the discussion of defining war bonds and my observation that characteristics include volunteerism and patriotism. I submit this falls into that category (except of course that they fail to meet the most basic requirement of being a financial instrument). Walt Disney prepared a certificate of appreciation for purchasers of U.S. war bonds. An example can be seen in SB on page 395 and at: http://www.scripophily.net/discharwarbo.html At the time, Walt Disney was arguably the biggest name in the entertainment industry. These certificates featured 22 different Disney characters as a border, including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Pinocchio, Pluto, Sleeping Beauty, Porky Pig, etc. The Walt Disney copyright symbol is in the lower left-hand corner. (There is a second version of a certificate of appreciation that illustrates other cartoon characters.) The Disney certificates were prepared under the auspices of the United States Treasury War Finance Committee and printed in 1944. They were distributed by banks and state war finance committees. There were three different printers: US Government Printing Office; Homer H. Boelter; and for the Minnesota Committee, by Colwell Press (4/24/44 imprint date, 5500 printed). There were different types - one in multi-color; one in black and white, where dots and line patterns were used in place of colors; and the Colwell Press version printed with black ink on blue green paper. There are many replicas and facsimiles for sale on Ebay. If you are interested in an authentic original, look for an Eagle and Shield watermark. R. M. Smythe Company auctions frequently offers the Disney certificates (genuine of course) and even sometimes has varieties. They are available in the collectors' market in both issued and unissued form. There are some interesting collecting options. The Disney certificates were distributed by state and prepared for the signatures of the State Chairs of the War Finance Committees. For collectors this creates the goal of collecting signed certificates representing all issuing authorities. A basic set of 48 representing the United States and perhaps an expanded set of 54 representing the States plus territories. Who will be the first? =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== We did not have the snow that hit the Northeast, but it has been cold for several days. This makes me think about Orlando and the FUN convention. Many Gramsters and Festers will be there. Of course we will probably talk much more about that in the next two weeks, but just in case you are on the fence about this, you have some time to make arrangements. I received an interesting letter from Ray Bows today. He has written another book! This one is about his personal experiences in Vietnam. I do not know if it even mentions MPC or money, but I expect that it does. I also expect that Ray will be at FUN because he usually is. Hopefully, we can all order copies of his book and have a nice chat with him at FUN. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, OK, so Toledo is the closest airport to FEST HQ and $ 21 or $ 42 for the extra night at the motel. So $ 148 + $ 21 = $ 169, right? And that covers room and board or just the room? I checked on flights out of Omaha and was quite surprised that I will not even have to go through Chicago (bonus). Also, when is payment due to you? Assuming that the math is correct. Please let me know ASAP. Thanks Fred. Jack H. Jack, Looks like you have the math correct. Payment is due by the end of January. Editor Dear Gram, Just to make sure that I understand the new/revised policy on want lists, am I correct in saying that I can no longer advertise in the Gram that I have started collecting MPC that contain my birth year (1947) in the serial number? Moe Letlow Dear Moe, I do not know of a new advertising policy. Yes, you may make such an advertisement, but it will not include your contact information. From the Gram’s point of view, we want to encourage people to advertise things for sale.
