From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 18, 2005 1:25 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1225 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / -----------------------=========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 006 - Number 1225, Tuesday January 18, 2004 FUN Report and Other things by Larry Smulczenski We just got back from FUN and I was happy to see that a number of gramsters had responded to my plea for FEST Auction lots. My sincere thanks to those of you that did, but the question begs to be asked--"How about the rest of you?" Dick Balbaton reminds me that I did not include my address, so here goes. Send lots to Larry Smulczenski, Box 263, Shalimar, Florida 32579. I got some great items or promises of the same for the auction at FUN from Leo May, Neil Shafer, Tim Kyzivat, Howard Daniel and Al Glaser. I feel we are back on the right track. The FUN show again was interesting and challenging. The Broward County Convention Center is located in a petrolium tank farm. With the fear of terrorists, there were a lot of police around and you were stopped everyday before going into the area. At the show, there were lots and lots of dealers, but most dealing in coins. Those of us with an interest in MPC or foreign notes had slim pickings. Except for Leo May, Jimmy Warmus, Leon Thornton Dave Amey and David Cieniewicz plus Tom Denly's stock of MPC, all you had was small groups that the coin dealers threw in their cases as a after thought. So there weren't too many exciting finds in our area of interest. The one that sticks out as far as we are concerned was a nice VF 591 dime. This one was not recorded but had a serial number slightly lower than any of the eight listed in the MPC book. I came up with two nice additions to the Florida collection. Found a nice $2 propaganda note like the one shown as number 406 on page 397 of World War II Remembered, but this one has a different message in Italian printed on the back. I found this one before the show opened as I was helping Leo set up. The note was in the next dealers case (not for long) and yelled at me as I wheeled Leo's cart by. The second item was in the Heritage Auction. There were about 18 MPC lots and 2 Foreign currency lots in the auction. But these are not what interested me. There was one lot that had current series low serial number Federal Reserve notes. You probably already guessed it. Included was one with serial number 00000039. However there were 23 other similar notes in the group. There was no way I could buy the lot. Fortunately it sold to a floor bidder who I had done business with previously. We concluded an agreement the next morning and this little gem came home with me. The best part of FUN is like most major shows. You get to see people that you have not seen for many months. I have mentioned many in the above paragraphs. Bill Yanchick, George Fitzgerald, John and Nancy Wilson are a couple more Festers that come to mind. If I forgot anyone, I apoligize and blame it on my Old-timers affliction. FUN was as usual a fun time. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== In a pile from who knows when, I just found a photocopy of a letter fromm Captain J. S. Holtwick, Jr. to Rear Admiral C. W. Wilkins dated 4 October 1952. The content is astonishing. Dear Admiral Wilkins: The enclosed samples, fresh off the press, of the five different denominations of Recreation Scrip being used for commerce on Japtan Island, might be an interesting souvenir. The natives accept it without demur, in exchange for such locally available examples of native craft as beer, ice cream, and pop. Your enthusiastic support of the project, and the fine backing you and your staff have given me and my people in establishing it, are sincerely appreciated. --end quote Wow. This seems to be saying that the Japtan notes that we know and have considered to be mostly souvenirs actually circulated in commerece. It also states FIVE different denominations were in use and finally, it was assumed that the admiral would be interested in these as souvenirs. I think that all of this is amazing (the most amazing part is that the letter still exists and has found its way into collectors' hands.) What are your thoughts on this? =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, I arrive into Toledo Thursday morning, and would like to have a non-smoking single from Thursday to Saturday night.
