They are cousins being the sons of my two oldest sisters. My family knew that Bens unit was headed overseas for the initial invasion. I was with his mother, my sister Rose, in Monterrey, Mexico when he called to let her know that he was going to Kuwait. I had thought about asking him to look for paper money for me. I did not do so because I figured that he had more important things to be concerned about during a war than satisfying his uncles quest for paper money. In the meantime, I bought a set of the first series of the AAFES pogs from Neil Shafer. I did not really consider collecting them any further; I just wanted them as a curiosity. At Fest V, I saw some of the later series and considered pursuing them. Despite this, I did not do so and concentrated on other things. Ben was home on leave in July and August 2004. I asked him about the Iraqi currency that he encountered. He said that he had kept a couple pieces as souvenirs, but really did not pay much attention to it. He indicated that the Iraqis preferred U.S. dollars when dealing with U.S. military personnel. I explained short snorters to him and asked if he would make one for me with the signatures of the others in his unit. He said that he would see what he could do. In August, I received an email from Ben asking for some of the comforts of home to be sent to him. He was especially fond of a cream cheese dessert that my wife made and wanted to know if there was a way that we could get some to him. I told him that it probably would not keep during the long journey from Wisconsin to Iraq. He suggested that we try packing it in dry ice. I remarked that I did not think the post office would be too happy to handle a package that had smoke coming from it (especially one going to Iraq through the military postal channels) and the plan was abandoned. I continued to get occasional emails from him. He complained a lot about operational matters. I am a veteran of Army Intelligence and he often kidded me about the poor intelligence they were receiving. One day a thick envelope arrived in the mail from Iraq with Bens return address. The contents were oddly packaged and I could not figure out what he had sent me. He used an inordinate amount of tape in securing it and it took a while for me to get it open. I got a little frustrated and the package split open, spilling about 200 of the pogs onto the floor of my kitchen. He included a short note with the pogs. He said that he did not know whether I would be interested in them but he was able to collect them up because the Marines in his unit did not like them. They thought they were some sort of scam that someone in the government was making money off of. I had seen them on Ebay and told him that the only people who were making money off them were the servicemen who were selling them. He finished by telling me that since he was getting them for nothing, he would send me as many as he could get his hands on. That initial package contained a pretty wide assortment. There were 43 different varieties in the envelope and plenty of duplicates. Each series was represented with only the first series being complete. I emailed him to thank him for sending them. A few days later, another envelope with 50 more arrived. I emailed him the URL of the papermoneyworld.net webpage devoted to the pogs and he said that he would keep an eye out for all of the different varieties. At this point, I need to tell you a little more about Ben. This story is really about him. Ben was born in 1980, the second son of my sister Rose. He graduated from high school in 1989 and spent a year at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He grew restless there and enlisted in the Marines in 2000. He was originally a computer operator and was stationed in Okinawa. This was not enough of a challenge for him and he asked to be reclassified to reconnaissance. As I said earlier, he took part in the initial invasion of Iraq. He was on his second tour when he began sending the pogs. He expressed a little trepidation about going back for the second tour. He was scheduled to get out of the Marines in October 2005 and in the letter that accompanied the pogs, he told me of his desire to attend the University of Wisconsin in the fall and was intending to walk-on to the football team. On November 24, 2004, Ben died of complications from wounds he received as a result of a roadside bombing in Al-Anbar Province. On November 13, 2004, his platoon was ambushed while on their way to assist another platoon that had come under attack. He received extensive injuries to his neck and chest. He had been evacuated to Bethesda Naval Hospital through Landstuhl, Germany. His condition was improving and his death was a shock to all including the medical staff. Ben was buried with military honors at Fort Howard Cemetery in Green Bay on December 4, 2004. Aside from the usual cluster of service medals, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. The citation for the Bronze Star is posted on a website. Those who are interested will find it at http://www.blackfive.net/main/2004/12/a_rifleman_firs.html Although I could certainly complete my collection from other sources, I have lost the desire to pursue the remainder of the pogs. I will retain a set of those that he sent me. Most of the duplicates were given out to family and friends. My collection of AAFES pogs, like the life of the man who collected them for me, will remain incomplete and unfinished. =========================================== Editorial/opinion ========================================== There have been a few Grams that have been hard to send. This is one of those. Many of us have made and experienced scarifices as military personnel and families. Our collection speciality is quite unique I think to be so closely associated with military operattions and personnel. To some extent numismatists collecting Confederate notes are similar, but that cofilict is so far removed that it is easy to shrug off the human tragedies involved. Certainly we give great cridit to the sacrifices of the current military personnel and their families, but, still, it is usually somewhat removed. Jim's story brings it home. Thank you, Jim, for sharing the story. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor- A couple of changes to the training schedule - 1. The Boling wedding is Friday, 3/11 at 0915, at St. Thomas Church - all Festers are invited; directions to the church will be made available to interested parties at time of check-in. 2. We will actually begin gathering for the reception/chow at 1730 Friday evening. Attendees will receive a numismatic souvenir to assure that the event lives on in memory. Louise Dear Gram, Thanks for the reply, sorry that my emails look so illiterate, it is my computer keyboard, I need to change out my computer, bought a real expensive one, but so used to the Win98 that I am a bit intimidated by xp pro, Thanks for the answer to the duplicate MPC serial numbers and Position Numbers, some of these bills I paid a fair amount for. As far as the Fest is going, I will not be able to attend this year, I am 100% disabled Vet and saving my money for a chance to cop a 701 series issue if one ever come with in my range, never know. I collect MPC and Bluejackets Manuals, coped a 1902 BJM, and one of my 1946 Bluejackets Manuals had an 481 $1.00 MPC in it used as a book marker, which was a nice find, hope every one has a great time, look forward to the message traffic on the Fest. Warm Regards to all. Bosun Tom Dorsher Dear Bosun, Ok, sorry to say that you got me there. I have no idea what a bluejackets manual is. I do however appreciate the fact that you combined two passions by obtaining a MPC in one. Editor Dear Editor, It's good that this is still a draft. Today's gram starts off with a plea from Ski to notify us all of again of his email change and then you follow up in the gram with this draff where at the end you have Larry's old email address again. Perhaps if you did a 'Replace' in the boilerplate(s) from 'Prodigy' to 'Cox' it may correct all occurrences of Ski's email address. This Gram has Two bad email addresses for Larry that I see, maybe more I overlooked. Dick Freyser Dear Editor, What a Surprise!! while carefully reading February's Numismatist issue and coming to page 93 and seeing the warm and friendly face of our leader. WOW Rod 27 Hardy... Dear "Freditor"! WOW Not only did the article about you in the February 2005 edition of the "Numismatist" make it appear that you really have something on the ball but the picture is suitable for framing. Congratulations! You really owe Gail Baker for the very well deserved plug. rusty =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== 2005 March 11-13, MPCFest VI, reservations now being accepted.
