Doug Bell, who was to arrive 20 minutes later, was there at our scheduled time, and we arrived at his time 8:20 P.M. That night, Friday the 13th, was loud & absolutely crazy. Thousands of Festers were on the scene, something I could not recall ever happening before. Well it hasn't. Until we have a Fest on Bourbon Street in Naw'lins!! We spent the night there, & left early in the morning for Mr. Krolls Casa. From the back of the car, (I thought it was the radio station we were listening to), I heard about the wonders of coffee, the regions in the world grown, the fantastic aroma of a freshly brewed pot, the essence a little drop of cream & sugar will bring to such an outstanding brew. Then, I saw the sign, Waffle House. Man, I love when things just seem to come together! Best Waffle House I have ever been in, great food, and Doug even tipped the cook! [with a Fest coin/note?ed] We made it to Harold's within the next hour or so, about 2 hrs. from NO. We arrived, walked into his house, & was told he had gone to the P.O. He pulled up a couple minutes later, and damn, we should have challenged him with a Fest coin then, cause he didn't have one on him! We were just to happy to see him & him us I guess. (next yr.) Larry Ski arrived just shortly after. Now, after all this other crap, I will tell you about the best Mini-Fest I have ever attended, not to slight any of the others by any means. This Fest was as down home as you can ever imagine, a wonderful rural setting on 12 acres, that use to be a nursery, so there are trees & plants of all kinds, not to mention truck parts of every gender. The Fest was held on Harold's birthday, the 14th, so all of his family was also there. It was really terrific to meet them all, & this was by far, the best food of any Fest I have ever been to. Bonnie & the Kroll crew managed to put together one heck of a spread, I thank you for the hard work & time you put into everything. Now for the Fest activities! First, Harold, you have WAY to much stuff!! We spent hours going over all his note, bonds, & such, & even Ski managed to say, "I don't have that one" more than once. Ski's 39 collection is also remarkable, if not flat out outrageous. He's a sick puppy, (as most of us are), as he will add to his collection anything with 39 on it, including I.Q. scores! Do you want them slabbed? Anyway, that ole man showed us younger bucks how to throw the shoes in the horseshoe events. NEWS UPDATE! Upon further review, as Ski was the score keeper for the last round of the horseshoe events before the finals, there have been protests submitted by the all the remaining players. This is due to possible erasures in the scores, & also that Ski might have failed the pre-testing for Steroid's. Gee, I hope that's not true............. He needs to defend his title next year! ========================================== Editorial =========================================== Wow, Steve what a great idea! Mini Fests a Waffle Houses around the country. We can combine the idea with Bill McNease's idea below and Solo Waffle Fests! In fact Fester C. Tolek and I will start it today or tomorrow. Waffle Houses are a chess tournament tradition with us--24 hour service and lotsa fat--what more can you want? =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I just wanted you all to know that while the LA MiniFest was be held, I held a mini-miniFest in NA (North Alabama). I paid myself in my own Fest money, drank one beer with a toast facing North to PC (Mecca of MPC) and re-read some chapters of Fred's MPC bible. I even challeged myself with the challenge coin and lost so I now owe myself an adult beverage. I was the only one in attendance so it was truely a mini-or should I say micro-Fest. Another note-my college has annual reunions and they were having a hard time naming the event. It is now AvFest (Aviation) '05. I didn't check on the copyright so will you do that Fred? Bill McNease Gram, In response to Herb Friedman's request for Pick numbers of the leaflet with the US $100 on one side and the Iraqi 25,000 dinar on the other side: I just got my new SCWPM vol 3, 11th edition. The catalogers did not allow themselves room for the series 2003 $100, which is the one on the leaflet. They ran series 2003 only through $10, then started series 2004 with the $20 and $50, and have not listed the $100 at all. If they use the next available number, it will be P521, but it ought to be P518.5 to be listed in its correct place. Maybe they will put it after 518 under the series 2003 issues, but call it 521. The Iraqi piece is the back of P96, the high value in the AH1424/2003 series. I must say, Herb's article about current leaflet operations on the psywarrior web site is marvelous. Every gramster should check it out. http://www.psywarrior.com/361stPsyopIraq.html Joe Dear Gram, Greetings from Shanghai. I'm here studying physics but numismatics is ever present. I went to the Oriental Pearl Tower, which is over 350 m high. On the lower level is a wonerful museum of the history of the city of Shanghai. Sure enough there was a nice section on bank notes and banking -including some original parts of the HSBC building here as well as a display of banknotes. This was also some history of the wonderful bank note story of Shanhai. They also had an actual currency exchasnge booth from the pre World War II period.--will write this up for the IBNS journal when I return. I am spending many yuan...
