Last Saturday, Lee was at John Albright's coin shop in the Gables, when he thought he was having a heart attack. The EMT guys were called and took him to Doctor's Hospital (the closest place) immediately. Fortunately, after all the testing was done, he was told that he had not had a heart attack, but an Angina attack instead. However, they decided to admit him over night for further observation. Along with the tests for the heart, they had, of course, taken mucho blood to test and that showed that his hemoglobin was extremely low (7.8 or 8.0) when it should be between 10 - 13, I think it is. He had been feeling really tired and had noticed several other things that made him go in to see his regular G.P. on the Thursday before, and he, too had taken blood for a complete panel and had told him to contact him Monday for the results. Since this all happened over the weekend, and none of his doctors were on call, they assigned him a doctor from the hospital who said he needed to have a transfusion to bring up the count. The kids came in to give blood and were told that it would take at least 3 days to get it checked and back from the blood bank. He said that he wouldn't have it until he saw his own doctor on Monday. I called Dr. Levine the first thing Monday morning and he stopped in to see Lee and said that if he hadn't landed there on Saturday, he would have put him there that day as his count was much too low. Based on that, and things Lee had told him at the office visit on Thursday, he ordered a colonoscopy, and endoscopy (which they decided was not necessary) and then later an CT of the abdominal area. Being Lee, he stayed awake and watched the entire colonoscopy, and so kept asking the doctor who was doing it questions. Long story short, they are sure that he has colon cancer. The pathology reports should have been back yesterday, but he hadn't heard the official results. However, all the pre tests for surgery have been done except one, and he hopes that the surgery will bee Monday or Tuesday. Since he has had blood work done over the past year fairly regularly by several of his doctors and no one has notice a particularly low blood count, we are hoping and praying that they have caught this in its early stages. His surgeon is in the same office practice as the doctor who performed the Gastric banding, ant his GP says that he is anb excellent surgeon and that it is best to have someone who understands the banding does the surgery to prevent complications. Apparently, it will be done laproscopicly, which will make his healing and recovery much faster. Lee is in pretty good spirits and in no pain at this time. He asked his regular doctor about his chances of being able to travel by mid June (Memphis show), and he said if all was OK and there were no added treatments needed, that that might be possible. Even if it isn't, he is aiming for San Francisco in late July for the ANA. So hopefully we will see you paper money folks then. Also to Jan and Kit: We'll keep you posted and still hope to see you as planned around the 4th of July. Anne, Bill and John, we hope to see you all in Bellevue around July 12-or so. Mike, if get to do all that and make it to the ANA show, we will be in the Vallejo area around the 20th or so, and would love to see you all. I imagine we will be traveling slower than originally planned but will plan it so that we will arrive in San Francisco on the 25 or 26 of July. If you use e mail, please send it to me at abcteach64@aol.com and I'll print it out and take it to him. He is at Doctor's Hospital, 5000 University Drive, Coral Gables, Fl. 33124 if you want to mail him anything. We ask for your positive thoughts and lots of prayers to be sent his way! I know that I don't have the addresses of many of his FEST friends etc., so if you all could pass this message on to any that you have who will want to know, we will both appreciate it! Thank you! Love, Val ========================================== Editorial =========================================== The bad news about paymaster came like a lightening bolt. I resonded to Val on behalf of the community (sorry if I sound presumptive) that our hopes and prayers go out to Leo and the entire May family. I am sure that I do not need to encourage you to say such a prayer in the way that suits your personal faith and beliefs. It just did ot seem right to include the normal (?) Gram items on an occasion like this. We certainly hope to see Leo and Val at San Francisco if not Memphis too and even if they cannot make those events, then at the next one. Of course we will pass on information that we receive and in the meatime encourage you to send a message of friendshop to Val's email address as given above. =========================================== MPC Gram Staff: Publisher, editor: Fred Schwan ?fred@papermoneyworld.net; Subscription Manager:Doug Bell- doug@papermoneyworld.net Tuesday Columnist : JoeBoling- JoeBoling@aol.com Friday Columnist: Warner Talso: wtalso@aol.com Fest Auctioneer: Larry "Ski"Smulczenski - skifla@cox.net, Critic:Harold Kroll - HARBONS@aol.com Scholarship Coordinator: Marcus Turner- marucs@papermoneyworld.net; Webmaster and Technical Advisors:Doug Bell "Wiz" - doug@papermoneyworld.net Russ Walsh - russ.walsh@gte.net Fact Checker: Warner Talso -Calendar Coordinator: John and Nancy Wilson -The Boss: Judy Schwan MPC Gram is published by BNR Press and papermoneyworld.com as a free service to the community of military money collectors.
