From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 22, 2005 1:53 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1299 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 006 - Number 1299, Wednesday, June 22, 2005 Memphis report (supplemental) by Joe Boling The MPC lots in the Smythe auction (that I discussed in last week's column) sold as follows: lot 2423, 591 $10 described as unimprovable gem uncirculated, but actually showing many signs of handling and perhaps some moisture absorption (but no folds) - $3000 on an estimate of $3000-4000. lot 2424, 692 $20 that really was gem uncirc for condition (though not perfectly centered) - $1100 on an estimate of $1000-1250. lot 2425, 21 sets (107 pieces each) of Carlson Chambliss' MPC reprints - $150. The speaker at the IBNS meeting was George Cuhaj, of KP Books, who described his experience attending Banknote 2005, a biannual meeting of paper money manufacturers, central banks, law enforcement agencies (with an interest in money), and others involved in security printing, note distribution, and protection of the money supply. He showed 35mm slides of many of the sample notes distributed at the meeting, incorporating advanced and innovative security features (he also offered the notes for physical inspection after the talk). Intaglio seems to be making a comeback, after falling out of favor as a primary security feature for several years. [In my own experience, I was surprised a couple of years ago to learn how many nations are using the intaglio latent image again - a feature that cannot be replicated on a color copier] George did not mention Eurion constellations (see my column in gram 1294). On the other hand, I was surprised at how few of the samples that he had showed any response to long-wave or short-wave UV light (at least as visible in the relatively well-lit lecture room). Even features that looked like prime candidates for brilliant UV response were dead to that stimulation. Ink manufacturers seem to be putting their stock in color-shifting and metallic properties now. Winner of the IBNS Amon Carter exhibit award for world paper money was Mark Tomasko, for an exhibit titled "American Banknote Picture Engraving Department, c.1910." Mark had a group photograph of the members of the department, and then showed one example of each member's work, including the original photograph or art that composed the design, a proof engraving, and a fiscal document incorporating that engraving. The fidelity with which a skilled engraver can copy a photograph is amazing. This exhibit also won the SPMC best-in-show award. ========================================== Editorial =========================================== I was wrong two Grams ago when I told you that the tape Gallant Lady had only one numismatic scene. I was wrong. I had not quite finished the book at that point and, frankly, I was not at all sure that I was going to finish it. Well, near the end it mentions the crew of the Archerfish being introduced to MPC in Japan in the early 1960s. Not much was said, but still it was fun to hear MPC mentioned in such a book. In the brief passage MPC was called script (incorrectly with a t). =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== SECOND IN A SERIES - 2005 MEMPHIS NOTE ISSUED As reported by Dan Freeland, the M2C2 Meeting at the 2005 Memphis show featured the second in a series of Memphis FMC notes. This year's note featured Admiral David Farragut, a Tennessee native and the first Admiral of the Navy in US history (that's 5 stars) on the blue and black face of the note. The back, printed in green, shows the USS Memphis CL 13, a light cruiser, the image having been taken from a 1934 photo. The notes measure approximately 6.5 by 3.0 inches, somewhat smaller than the 2004 Memphis Belle issue. One hundred notes, numbered 001 through 100 were printed along with four specimens with the 000 serial number. The notes were sold at the five dollar face value with the proceeds going to the scholarship fund. One of the specimens was sent to Leo May, leaving three remaining which will be held for the Fest auction. The remainder of the notes not sold at Memphis are available via mail at a cost of five dollars, plus one dollar shipping and handling. Requests can be made via emal to stjasele@optonline.net. Specific number requests will be honored on a first come fist served basis. The following serial numbers are currently available: 027 - 028 - 030 - 031 - 032 - 035 - 036 - 037 - 038 - 040 - 041 - 042 - 043 - 048 - 049 - 053 - 054 - 056 - 057 - 059 - 060 - 061 - 062 - 064 - 067 - 068 - 071 - 073 074 - 075 - 076 - 078 - 081 - 082 - 083 - 084 - 085 - 086 - 087 - 089 - 090 - 091 - 092 - 094 - 095 - 097 - 098 The notes will be available at the ANA World's Fair of Money in San Francisco in July and at the FUN show in Orlando in January 2006. Any remaining notes will be available at the FEST in 2006 after which any unsold notes will be destroyed.
