Lower Alabama, finally had power restored so we are up and running and have the AC running wide open. We suffered some damage but it is all livable, compared to what we are seeing on the television. I am very familiar with the Gulf Coast area and just from the pictures you can tell the devastation is unreal. If you have never been through a hurricane it would be hard to imagine what takes place, Ivan put a 4 foot diameter Oak tree through the backside of our house, this memory will be forever. Katrina was the fourth one to hit land in our area so far this year and there is mention of another 5 or 6 possible before the hurricane season ends. I do not wish bad things on anyone but anymore can head for another direction away from our area. Fuel and gasoline are in very short supply and there have been reports of fights and arrests at the stations, lines for gas are extending over one mile in length with many running out of gas trying to get more. Temperatures are running in the 90 plus degrees and people are acting in a frenzy and in most cases just stupid. We are eating very well as things thaw out in the freezers, you cook it all. We all are very appreciative for the e-mails and phone calls concerning our situation, thank you. All MPC and other material made it through OK, I'm very happy for that. There are thousands upon thousands of families that have lost everything they owned, please take some time to check out you local area for donation centers that will be sending needed items to the people in need, clean out your closets, attics, garages of unwanted clothing, shoes, or anything that could help some person, of course any unwanted MPC should be sent to L.A. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== As part of my visit to the Eisenhower museum in the 1970s, I donated North African and Hawaii notes to the museum. Shortly thereafter they used the notes in an exhibit. They might have even displayed the Morgenthau-Eisenhower sheets. I do not remember that part exactly. On my most recent trip (August 2005), I did notice that not only were none of those notes on display, but hardly any notes were displayed. This is not to say that there was not plenty of numismatic material, but notes, not many. The few that were there were short snorters. The only one of those that comes to mind was made and carried by a nurse. It is a shame that no Allied francs are on display. Afterall, they were not only issued on D-Day, but were issued on General Eisenhower's personal authority. I wrote a little essay about this for a D-Day anniversary, possibly this year. Essentially, the Allied 2 franc note is my absolute favorite note. The fact that it is very common adds to its interst to me. Indeed, I believe that it is in more collections than any other note! That is because it fits into many numismatic collections AND examples were sent home to thousands (tens of thousands or more?) of loved ones as a souvenir (there must be a better word) of the events in France. Many of those notes are in scrap books and photo albums today. Many of those albums are prized family treasures, tragically others have lost their identity or meaning and are floating out there for collectors to find and preserve. That is the silver lining. Anyway, the museum should realize all of this. I am putting it on my short list of things to do to work on that. =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== His Royal Highness, his Royal Fredness, grovel, grovel etc. etc.: I see in your last Graham that Ski is in TEXAS!!!
