From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2005 5:03 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1336 corrected, read this one ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 006 - Number 1336 Saturday September 3, 2005 A Mystery Find by Roger Urce About a week prior to the ANA show in San Francisco, two interesting looking receipts were offered on Ebay, and after some back and forth bidding, I was able to acquire the items shown in the attached scan. The dates indicate the period of the Sino-Japanese War. Apparently, during that time, there were a group of Chinese in the Albany, NY area supporting the Chinese Embassy in their effort to resist the Japanese who were overrunning China. The characters vertically on the left indicate the Bank of China and the donation was made, in both cases, by the same individual as the handwritten character on the far right is Chinese for a form of the word "mister." (I was not able to get a translation for the proper name). The receipts, which are 9x4.5 inches in size, are printed on a lightweight paper (possibly a rice paper) and are similar except for the date area: as shown, the 1938 form has three preprinted numerals, whereas the form for the following year utilizes only the 1 and the nine. In 1938, the authorized signature is a handstamp while in 39 the signature is hand written. A Google search failed to provide any information for the Anti -Japanese Supporters Alliance at the Albany, NY address and the Chinese Embassy Relief Fund also yielded no results. I did ask the seller for added information but he only replied he obtained the receipts about fifteen years ago in a lot of "Chinese Paper." Perhaps these receipts can be included in the "Financing the War" category since they represent funds collected to resist an invading enemy. If anyone can provided any additional information, please do so. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/EMBASSY_RELIEF_FUND_RECEIPTS.jpg ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Carlson Chambliss stopped by Gram HQ on his way home from Lyn Knight's auction and grand opening. He had lots to report. Lots, but not much of interest to the Gram. Cuneyd Tolek was also scheduled to stop by so I postponed challening Carlson until Cuneyd arrived and it paid dividends. It was a mini Fest: Carlson, Cuneyd, Judy and I. It was also an embarrassement for the visitors. Neither Carlson nor Cuneyd had their challenge coins. Carlson made a break for the door but I blocked him out. Cuneyd tried to take advantage off the situation by flashing something--decidedly NOT a Fest challenge coin (or any other challenge coin for that matter). Carlson did produce a challenge coin from his car, but faced another embarrassement. It was in a coin holder! Gad. I have suggested before that the only way to have a challenge coin when you need it is to always carry it. =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Fred, Instead of "souvenir," how about "memento" or [ugh!] "relic"? Thanks for the info from Harold that he is safe. I haven't heard anyone mention Graham Ton, a paper dealer from Gulfport, Mississippi, has any one heard from him? Also Bob Reed is from the New Orleans area and I haven't heard about him either. We have a bunch of evacuees here in Nacogdoches County. I concur with your call for assistance/donations tothe major relief agencies. Beware of con-artists, though, there's always a bunch of'em around ready to suck resources from the needy. Jay in Garrison, TX P.S. Regular Gas here in Garrison is $2.999/gallon today, a rise of 60 cents this week. Dear Jay, Thank you very much for writing. You are soooo right. Bob Reid (or is it Reed, I think Reid) is indeed a paper money guy form New Orelans area. Indeed, he is a Gramster. Judy and I were trying to think of others and I knew that I was not doing a good job (of remembering and therefore of reporting). Graham Ton is not a Gramster (that I know of), but I have known him casually for at least 25 years so you are right on the money there. Now that you have me thinking, Richie Self is from somewhere down there and there were several coin shops in New Orelans. I one time attended a coin show in Biloxi. It was an active show so there were must have been lots of collectors in the area. It is just a little aside in this case to tell why I was at the show in Biloxi. Joe and I were just getting to work on World War II Military Currrency (Schwan-Boling 1, ca 1976). I believe that it was at that show that we worked out the basic framework for the organization (sic?) of the book. I think that Joe was stationed in Germany at the time, but had to do some army business in Biloxi area (I think that there is an air force base near by). I took the opportuinty to have an editorial meeting (and attend the show). I now remember more about the show. John Pittman, Grover Criswel, and Paul Garland were all there. They have all passed now. Paul Garland had some military notes and some stories. I bought some of the former and listened to a few of the latter. Possibly Joe remembers something of the meeting/show too. I am sorry that I got distracted from the most important matters. I offer my own private prayers and solicit yours again for all those who have suffered so much and continue to. I also solicit reports on other numismatists who need our prayers. Editor Dear Editor, Memento. Joe Dear Editor, Regarding Murray Hanewich's story in Gram 1330 << I was very pleased to see our small Post office here in Oyen (population 950) flying the Maple Leaf at half-mast already! Our local Legion Hall and Cenotaph had already lowered the flag to half-mast as well. >> I understand that the Queen's English as spoken in Canada has many instances of spelling or meaning being different than the American English that we speak. That being said however, the flagpoles flying the flags at town hall and the veteran's hall are called STAFFS. Were these poles on a ship they would be called masts.
