From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, November 29, 2005 2:08 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1380 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire field (vast and expanding) of military numismatics Vov 7, no 1380 Tuesday Nov 29, 2005 More counterfeits etc. by Joe Boling I have spent a lot of time this week working on a bond and share collection that I bought this summer - why does it take four months to find time to work on anything? Anyway, those interested in acquiring Japanese bonds and other non-banknote fiscal paper, see the PX section of this gram (if the editor gets my submission posted - if he doesn't, just email me). Nothing new popped up in that material - though there were a few dups of scarce pieces that I will not be offering for sale, so that I can assemble a type set to use for instruction after I sell the balance of my main Japanese scripophily collection. One item I picked up in Japan in August when Louise and I were there is a counterfeit of Federal Reserve Bank of China 100 yuan, SB1099. It is an amazing production - intaglio face and back, two colors of tint on the face, one color on the back, perfect serials, and even a watermark of sorts. The defects are that the watermark is not bold enough, and the two-color face tint should be a three-color tint. All the lines are there, but what on the genuine notes is green and brown is green only on the fake (and the wrong shade of green, but the tint is so light even on a genuine note that this difference in shade is not noticeable to the naked eye - neither is the fact that two tints have been combined into one). The vendor told me that this is a Nationalist product. It is the first time I have heard of the Nationalist government preparing counterfeits. The quality is so high that I really wonder if the OSS did not get involved in this emission, although we found no references to FRB notes in the "merchandise" files that Howard Daniel obtained for us. Even though this series was issued 1 October 1941, it was still in use when the OSS got involved in support of Col Eifler (early 1943). On the other hand, it is not QUITE the same quality engraving as the CRB fake I have from ABN that was apparently prepared for an OSS contract. Does any reader have information about this counterfeit? Dearborn Mini-Fest Report by Steve Jinks First off, I would like to thank Dan and Cathy Friedland for initiating this mini-fest. It gave me the opportunity to attend one where otherwise I would not be able. I finally got the chance to meet the Great Freditor. The program started a bit after 12:30 and a few latecomers arrived, ala Wendel Wolka and John Wilson. Besides those gentlemen and the Friedlands, there were Fred and John's Bosses, myself, and 3 other gentlemen, who will forgive me, I hope, for not knowing your names! We all had to show our challenge coins. Mine was in a flip -- bad form sez Fred. Counted just the same, ha, ha! We all, one way or another, had an item (s) for show and tell. Saw some cool stuff. Mine was a UN Emergency Force One Egyptian Pound booklet used during the Suez Crisis. One gentleman, who is new to miltary collecting, brought some great Canadian slabbed coins. Was not military related and Fred let him know! ;>) John passed out JIM notes to everyone - thanks again! He also had us sign a MFC short snorter. I felt honored, considering the only time I sign my name, I sign away money. I also received my firs (mini) Fest notes. I think a good time was had by all. *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner An X indicates replacements for what Allied military issues? Question 10, difficulty 2-3. Yesterday's Question(s). How many printing were there for MPC Series 481 $1 notes? Question 8. Difficulty 1. What is the denomination of the only Allied military coin? For bonus points, where was it minted? Question 9, Difficulty 2. The answer is: The answers are fairly straight forward. The Series 481 $1 had four printings. We have to be a little careful with this question because there is a mystery printing for the $10 denomination. It may be a fourth printing or a fifth printing or a mystery printing. Regarding the AM coin, this one is really straight forward. 2 francs. It was minted in Philadelphia. Comments from the field: Question #8 Only 4 printings of 481 $1.00, but this is bound to be a trick question! As Dick has mentioned a possible 5th. Sticking with 4 for now. #9 The only thing that comes to mind is the 1944 issue 2 franc coin for Belgium, minted in good old Philadelphia, PA on the same planchets used for the 1943 steel cent. (US). Probably wrong on both, but that's the best I can figure. I sure hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. And happy holidays to come! Jack [well, Jack, you did well on the MPC. The coin question is interesting. You had the anwer correct, 2 fr Philadellphia, but still you had it wrong because of your additional information. The Allied 2 franc coin is brass. See Remembered page 281. Sorry that the illustration is so poor.] From Joe Boling regarding American Taxi tickets: American Express IS correct. Read my column in gram 1340. Now you have at least three places they have to look for answers - SB, MPC-IV and the gram. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== We had a very pleasant trip to Dearborn for the Michigan State convention. I was fortunate to do some business and see lots of people. I did find two people who have not been receiving their Grams for quite a while. Hopefully, I can get them started again, but I worry about the others. I read in the e-sylum that there have been some delivery problems via AOL for that newsletter. I also learned from Harold Kroll that he often must look in the spam folder on AOL to find his Gram. I doubt if we will ever solve all of these issues. Do we have any Festers out there who are also stamp collectors? If so please give me a call about an interesting project. =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Editor, I am quite new to MPCgram, due to the effort of Kerry, and I was pleased to see a lot of people out there whom i know from the Maastricht/Valkenburg Bourse. And also, I was very happy about all the MPGrams I got, because there was a lot of useful information. I have just a question: i do have some rare Camp notes from WWI: not catalogued , and no way to find out (not in Campbell, Tieste, or any other catalogue) what they are: signed by US officers : Could you recommend someone to help me out? And could i send a scan of these notes to MPCgram? Kind regards, Dr. C.Schuddeboom Dear Sir, Welcome to the Gram! We are delighted to have you and look forward to more letters etc from you. Certainly Gramsters will be interested in learning about the notes that you have and might be able to help you with information on some of them. Gramsters never cease to amaze me. How many are you talking about? If the number is small you can send an image and it can be posted (send it/them to doug@papermoneyworld.net). If there is a large number, you will probably want to break it up. Of course any information that can supplement the images will also be very useful.
