From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Sunday, December 18, 2005 12:37 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1391 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1391 Sunday Dec 18, 2005 Fest Auction by Larry "Ski" Smulczenski Christmas is upon us and Fest is not far after that. Therefore we have to start planning for one of the events that Festers always enjoy and look forward to. Of course I am referring to the Fest Auction. But there can be no auction without consignments to bid on. So I am making my annual plea for both donations for items that will support our scholarship fund and also for items that you want to sell and make a few bucks on. Cut off for lot acceptance of consignments will be 31 January and that is a hard and fast date. No exceptions. Last year I spent two days trying to reconcile the proceeds from the auction and then after two months, I get a call informing me that I hadn't settled for a lot that was handed to me the morning of the event. That is too much of a strain on my ulcers so please, let me know what you have to offer and send it to me --Larry Smulczenski, Box 2271, Georgetown, TX 78627 or email me at skitex@cox.net . As last year, you put a minimum on your item and we will not sell it for less. If the item is large you can describe it for me , we will include it and you can bring it to the Fest. The main thing is to get started now and let me know what you have. *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What American colonel ordered counterfeits of Malayan JIM? Question 21, difficulty 3. Yesterday's Question(s). Elephants are on issues for what two colonies during World War II. Question 20, difficulty 3. The answer is: See comments below. Comments from the field and from the champ (Jack Hunter): Well I thought I would be up all night on this one. The to (sic) colonies that have elephants, might be three. You did not specify if they were on paper money or a coin, so it could be three. Hell, it could be more than that if I found the wrong ones!! I came up with French Indochina 10 cent notes S/B # 510 and the 1 & 2 franc notes of the Ivory Coast S/B # 1421-23. But because you did not say just paper money, the following (10 gram bonus?) applies. Belgian Congo emergency issues with S/B #'s 4001- 4004 also have elephants as the main device. I still have not received gram 1388, after several attempts, and several different sources, it has been sucked into the abyss of cyber-space never to be seen again :( [Very good, Jack. This makes up for the JIEA coupon question! The question as it was written on the card was "WWII Ivory Coast notes have the head of what animal?" That was way too (not to or two) easy for the open book contest, so I changed it. The two colonies that I had in mind when I composed it were Belgin Congo and Ivory Coast. After it went out I thought of the FIC notes. I was afraid that Burma or India might also have elephants that I had not thought of, but I do not see any in looking at the book. Possibly there is an elephant burried in one of the crests on the back of some of the Malayan notes. The bottom line is that it was not a good question as published in the Gram. You should expect it more like the original question at the Fest although I could put in some more variants (and probably will)--Ed.] ========================================== Editorial ========================================== I really liked Jim Downey's article on idle tires. It was new and interesting even if not earth shaking. The bonus for me was the responses that it generated. I can tell what kind of response a Gram article will receive with exactly the same accuracy that I can predict the stock market! It frequently happens that some article that I think should generate lots of mail is greeted with a great yawn, and others that I think will bomb generate lots of mail. I think that that is a strength of the Gram. Actually, I think that it makes the Gram just like the print publications, which helps validate the concept. =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Editor, Here is possibly another correction. The FUN Show is being held in the new section of the Convention Center and that address is 9400 Intl Dr. It is on the other side of the street even though the address is still an even number. I have heard that it is a little further South. Some of us will be getting a bit more exercise than planned. See the Fun Topics Link. http://www.funtopics.com/coin_show.html Mark Wm Clark Dear Mark, Exercise! That is something that moe than a few Gramsters and Festers can use! We must thank the FUN organizers for having the health of Festers in mind. In spite of the open lakes swims at the Fest, Festers do not show much improvement in this area. Editor Dear Editor,  I think the article by Jim Downey in the latest MPC Gram entitled "Defense Supplies Corporation" would be of interest to members of the Society of Ration Token Collectors.  I hereby ask for permission to reprint it in a future issue of The Ration Board.  Credit would, of course, be given to the original source.    Sincerely,   Michael Florer editor, The Ration Board Dear Michael, We would be flattered, but you must also receive permission from the author. Jim, speak up now or forever hold your piece. By the way, I just received my ration Board and enjoyed it as always. I wish that I had joined the society many years before I did. On the other hand, with Don Kolkman's salesmanship, I still would not be a member. Editor Dear Editor, An original DSC "Idle Tire Surrender" form used to receive as a gift or to buy the idle tires referred to in Jim Downey's article in Gram 1390 was lot #4 in the SRTC fall auction and sold for $15.75.   Don Dear Don, The text that Jim sent AND the scan that you sent of the blank form have been entered into the draft of WWII2. Thanks so much. You really should come to the Fest. I think that you would have a good time.
