From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Saturday, December 24, 2005 9:54 AM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1395 the 1396 was obviously an error ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1395 Friday December 23, 2005 Navy Paymasters by David Klinger Fred asked me several questions about "paymasters" and "pay clerks" in the Navy. This is what I found. Originally the paymaster role in the Navy was filled by warrant officers, called Pursers, just as in the Royal Navy. Their duties centered around shipboard supply, disbursement, and administration. They became commissioned officers in 1812. On June 22, 1860 their title was changed to "Paymaster." On July 11, 1919 Paymasters became "Supply Officers", the designation they retain today. Their insignia is a split oak leaf (not to be confused with the oak leaf used for rank). In the 1860 time frame an enlisted "pay clerk" was established. They were first called Paymaster's Stewards. That was changed to Paymaster's Writer in 1870 and changed again to Paymaster's Yeoman in 1878. In 1919, when Paymasters became Supply Officers, their enlisted assistants were renamed Storekeeper (D). The (D) designation stands for Dispursing Clerk. The insignia for all storekeepers was the crossed keys. That name lasted through WWII, until 1948 when as part of a major overhaul of the Navy enlisted rating structure, the new rating became Dispursing Clerk (DK). The DK insignia is a IBM punch card with one key. The DK rating was just combined (Sept 2005) with the Personnelman (PN). The PN insignia is used for the new combined rating. The PN insignia is the book and quill. [sounds like some good March Madness questions there--Ed] Clip art pictures: http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/ranks/ratings/admin.html *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What denomination Allied military francs was printed but not issued? Question 24, difficulty 2. Bonus question. What did Len Buckley design? Question 25, difficulty 2. Yesterday's Question(s). Charles Vyner Brooke is on an emergency note of what colony? Question 23, difficulty 2. Bonus who question: Who painted the lighthouse illustrated on $1 MFC? The answer is: See comments below. Comments from the field and from the champ (Jack Hunter): (repeated from yesterday) Charles Vyner Brooke, was the last "white rajah" and is pictured on an emergency note of Sarawak S/B # 4801 pg 249 in WW II Rem. Although the entry is very brief, turns out that this could be a long read also. Who knew that history could be so fun? Looks like I might be spending a few nights a the library to read up on this guy too. I am still in doubt about your rating scale though, difficulty 2 ? If it wasn't for the inter-net, this could have been much harder! For the bonus, I am guessing on the faint memory of Fest VI (?) that it was your nephew David (?) Schwan. But that would be in another book altogether. (MFC III Rem.) but I honestly could not locate any mention in that reference. [Yes, David Schwan is the artist who created the lighthouse on various of the MFC. He is also the artist who has been at the Fest doing caricatures of Festers some of which have then appeared on Fest bonds. He is a brilliant artist, obviously the product of good genes. --Ed.] ========================================== Editorial ========================================== Carlson Chambliss was here again for two days working on his book. Actually, this time I can say that he was here finishing his book. (His actually means his and Gene Hessler's.) I have bragged about it before, but I must say that they are taking paper money catalogs to a new level. At least that is my opinion. Of course the book includes MPC as all previous six editions have and there are a few surprises in that section too. I am sad to report that Carlson failed the challenge coin test upon arrival. Of course that made him an easy target for the rest of the visit too. I figured that Wendy at the desk would have her way this him when he failed the text, but she did too! The only way to be sure that you have your challenge coin when you need it is to carry it all of the time. You can sew a special pocket into your pajamas if you must. I may have gotten a little commercial in this space when the current MPC book came out so I will slip a little bit and do it again. No, I have a better idea. I will include the offer that I was typing here in the Exchange section. Furthermore, we have been getting a few more listings for this section, so you should start checking it if you had gotten lazy and stopped. =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gramsters, What some very sad news for all of us regarding the health condition of our Paymaster and great friend Leo May. All of our prayers and thoughts are with Val and the family during these very hard and trying times. Love and prayers, John and Nancy Wilson Dear Esteeemed Editor, During 2005, I made two trips to see a Vietnam War comrade of mine and an uncle who are in bad health to say goodbye to them and how much I enjoyed their friendship and companionship over many, many years. I really, really hate reading about one of the good guys in numismatics like Leo being in a condition where I cannot have that last talk with him. There are some people who cannot handle face to face, man to man, talks about the end, but Leo is not one of them, and I especially like men like him. So I will have to go out on the end of my pier and say something to him over a great deal of space, and hope my words reach him. If there is anyone out there who wants to have something for Leo at the FUN Show, please contact me at HADaniel3@msn.com, and also please tell me who to contact in the FUN organization to arrange it. My best to Leo and Val, and to his family and many friends. The Master Sergeant Daniel Dear Howard, Looks like the answer is to write to Johnancyw@aol.com. Editor, I was saddened by the news of Leo's situation. I feel fortunate that I had talked with Leo and Val at the St. Louis show in November. I was able to personally present his set of ANA MFC that I had held for him as he was unable to attend due to his prior hospital stay. He was happy to be back on the road attending shows and chatting with all of his friends. My thoughts and prayers are certainly with Val and their family. On aside note, put me down for Fest VII. I arrive early Thursday morning and will be available to help with any last minute details. If possible, first floor single room with an additional day. I am looking forward to seeing everyone Fest VII, "LeoFEST." Al Dear Editor, So why were the replies to the Sarawak and the lighthouse artist questions printed in the same gram as the initial posing of the questions? Are you passing the questions to Hunter ahead of time? Sounds like a replay of the quiz game scandals of the 60s. Joe Dear Joe, Hm. Charles Vyner Brook was the leader of the Free India Movement! Not buying that? Well, we want to keep everyone thinking fast? Not that either? Ok, well, it is confusing creating questions for tomorrow, publishing todays, and answering yesterdays.
