Pre Fest Activity
by Fred Schwan
Fest Thursday was a busy one for Festers and staff.
The day started with volunteers carry cases and other
equipment to the Camp May. Volunteers were abundant
from the many Festers who had arrived before noon.
The afternoon was mostly spent chatting, talking,
discussing, and otherwise having discourse about
notes, notes, notes, and then some notes.
The first semi official activity of the Fest weekend
is the bourse banquet (term used very liberally) held
at a high class joint called Big Boppers. This is the
third (or possibly fourth) year that the group has
gone there. An excellent meal was had by 36 Festers.
It is of particular interest that lake perch was part
of the bufet because the Fest staff had had huge perch
meals the preceeding two nights at another Port
Clinton quisine highlight called Jolly Roger.
For the first, but certainly not the last time, the
bourse banquet a bowling contest was held. This was
suggested by someone a few weeks ago who was trying to
get out of the 2 mile swim. Desipte the ill intent,
the concept was excellent.
Doug Bell and Steve Swoish were the ring leaders of
the event and Bill Myers was the (much needed)
battalion surgeon.
Before the contest started, a new award was
unveiled. It is certainly going to be called a Bell
something after the creator. Possibly Bell Ball will
work. Possibly the jargon will evolve that the winner
was Balled.
The award with goes to the highest single scorer of
the match is a clear 16 pound bowling ball with an
uncirculated MPC Series 541 $5 replacement serial
number F00000001. Most people were interested in how
Doug got the note into the Ball. No one seemed
particularly interested in the possiblity that the
note might be a fantasy.
I figured that I needed to sandbag or posture a bit.
In the five minute practice period I staged a
marvelous fall where my legs went out from under me on
the oily lane, I fell backward, and appeared to hit my
head very hard on the lane. I think that everyone was
convinced. The doc went along with my ploy pronouncing
me injured but fit for, er, well, duty.
You should have seen the boss. She smoked he first
game. I do not remember the score, but will try to
report it later when we get all of the stats. Anyway,
I held back as part of my plan started with the hean
knock.
Between games, Al Glaser and I complainted about the
terrible playing conditions. He noted that the pins
were very dead and it was unlikely that pros could get
striked. I pointed out that the lighting was terrible.
Not only was it low, but was lighitng there was
created a terrible glare. Then Al pointed out that the
footing in the run up was very uneaven with slippery
and sticky sports. The house ball (use required by
rules of the contest) were terrible. (I think that
most of them had the normal three holes, but I am not
certain.
Since the Boss had crushed both of us, Al and I
figured that we needed to save some ego and challenged
each other heads up on the second, and last of three
scheduled games. I figured that I had him because of
all of my acting and holding back in the first game.
We settled on a wager of $7 MFC. I quickly found out
that he was thinking the same thing. He went to a big
lead ripping four strikes in the middle frames.
I do not know if he was a better bowler than I, but
it looked like he was a better actor, but you intrepid
reporter fought back. However, he chocked a bit, but
Al finished with a score that looked untouchable to
me, something like 148 (final states available later
in the Gram or checkyour Friday sports pages).
Remarkably, I stuggled into the tenth where a strike
would put me in a good position to catch him. Then
there was an intervention of some kind. I must have
though that it was baseball, because I struck out
plucking victory from the jaws of defeat. The throng
cheered (well, Judy clapped).
The winner of the Bell Ball has not been determined.
In the finest tradition of Olympic figure skating
judging Doug and Steve have to calcualate the winner.
In addition to some innovative (crazy?) scoring called
9-pin no-tap AND a handicap the results require hand
tabulating.
We will probably make the award on Sunday with the
other awards and Doug can claim that the delay in
results was part of the plan.

Editorial
==========================================
Today was a wonderful day at the Fest and it was only
Thursday. There were some travel problems, but they
all seemed to work out. After midnight when we got
back from bowling, Carlson Chambliss was at the hotel.
I had the pleasure of presenting him with the first
copy of his new book. He had not seen it before now.
He seemed quite pleased.
The hit of the day was the hotel keys!? Doug Bell
in cooperation with the hotel staff arranged for the
hotel magnetic keys to feature pictures of MPC! On top
of that, they are all different! Everyone loves them.
The major activity Friday during the day is a (sort
of) traditional bourse. We have about 10 dealers as
mentioned earlier. There are indications of some good
attendance by visitors. I have had several calls from
people who saw the notice in Bank Note Reporter or
Numismatic News. They are always surprised that this
is a Friday only bourse. I cannot blame them, but then
again, the Fest is not a normal numismatic event.
The Fest proper starts Friday night. Hopefully, Joe
or someone will pick up with a report tomorrow. I
doubt if I will have the energy.

Mail Call

Dear Gram,
The Master Sergeant Daniel has arrived at the MPC
Fest at the Holiday
Inn Express and is in room 228.
Howard A. Daniel III
Dear Gram,
Thanks for clearing that up. I'd like to have an MPC
fivecenter for
every one of those that I've liberated by putting them
in the rectangular/round file over the years. I had
always assumed that some clerk someplace with time on
his hands was trying to justify his existence by
punching the holes. We live and learn.
Richard@doric
Dear Editor,
Re: MPCGram 1432 special auction issue.BAD IDEA !! I
can't open that file. I'm sure others are with me.
David Klinger,
Dear Editor,
I am sure you are busy with the Fest preparations. I
wanted to notify you that the list (attached in Gram
1432) did not come out legibly.
Could you sent it out as a pdf file or some other
commonly read format?
Thanks and wish you a great time at the Fest.
Ken
Dear Editor,
Please enter the following bids in the Fest
auction, whenever it is...
By the way I know you are not a coin person, but
grades like, "very little wear" and "nice" probably
don't do it.
