From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 07, 2006 9:20 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1436 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1436 Tuesday March 9, 2006 Fest Report Roger Urce Friday evening began with the introductions after which the Fest Post Office was introduced and opened for the first time. Envelopes had been prepared with an imprinting of a War Bonds poster and a newly designed fifty cent Fest postage stamp featuring Leo May. Click the link for an image of the stamp. Stamped "First Day of Issue" and cancelled with a Port Clinton "postsmark" the envelopes were offered at two dollars MFC each. Also available were serialized sheets of 24 stamps at $12 MFC. The position of Fest Postal Officer was also created to continue with future stamp projects. (Look for another issue, this time with serialized envelopes, at the Memphis m2c2 meeting in June). The first round of March Madness began with Al Glaser offering a listing of questions and answers from previous grams at a cost of $6 MFC each. His offer came back to bite him when he missed a previously answered Gram question, but he did redeem himself (see madness results later on). Saturday's educational forum had a number of speakers on varied and interesting topics starting with Ski's photographs and lecture on his trip to Fanning Island. He explained that the island is now used just as a tourist stop for the cruise lines, but duing WW2 in was an important base that had to be defended from the enemy to prevent the destruction of the cable line that passed over the island on its route between Australia and Canada. At that time there was also a plantation on the island but over time all the buildings, save the concrete walls, had been destroyed by termites. The theatre which used one half of the original Fanning Island notes as tickets was no longer there, but a trip to the men's room put you in the same "position" as movie goers during the war. Alas, no notes were found. Steve Feller, assisted by daughter Rachael, presented photos and commentary on the German occupation of the islands of Guernsey and Jersey located just off the French coast of Normandy. The islands, which are self governing, endured a stern occupation force forcing the residents to turn in their existing notes in favor of occupation notes issued by Germany. The notes, prior to being surrendered, were counterstamped to avoid their use after the war. Notes were then issued by both Jersey and Guernsey for use during the occupation. Steve was able to visit museums on both islands and to talk with local residents at length about the notes and occupation. He did manage to bring back some occupation notes along with some current issues. His photographs of current conditions was show in conjunction with propaganda photos from the wartime occupation. Other presenters included Pat Bethe who spoke of Chief Ouray and passed around an intaglio print featuring the chief along with a post office cancellation of a fantasy Ouray stamp; Steve Swoish delivered custom made pages and binders to hold AFEES Pogs which had been previously ordered. The two binder set, which is expandable, will hold all current and an upcoming Pogs issued; new fester Jim Crowe had with him a binder containing a number of Christmas and holiday menus from various military units and said he had just purchased the 1941 Thanksgiving day menu for the USS Arizona BB39. Ray Bows, who along with his wife Pia are also first time festers, had displayed his colection of unit pins and patches along with various tokens and chits not only from Viet Nam, but from earlier conflicts. His education presentation dealt with a number of series of gasoline coupons used by SHAPE personnel in Europe. Ray had copies and photos of the coupons and related items used during his assignments to that command. An indepth discussion regarding the court cases both in the Philippines and the United States concerning the post war status of Japanese Philippine JIM was presented by Jim Downey. He explained how the courts had upheld the use of JIM as legal tender during the Japanese occupation and why the currency could not be redeemed after the war despite the suits brought by JAWANCAP. We are winding down at Fest HQ, but still not done. Five out of town Festers are still here. They are all waiting to go to Chicago in a few days. That too should be a good time. Jim Downey displayed a Leo May commemorative for distribution by him at CPMX. I am not sure at what meeting it will be distributed, but receiving one of them should make a trip to the show worthwhile. At the Fest he offered these to people who were not going to Chicago at $5 each for the scholarship fund. I expect that he will honor that same offer now. Roger Urce is one of the stay behind Chicago bound Festers. We are thankful for his wonderful report and look forward to part two tomorrow. Other reports are coming in. We appreciate each and every one and expect to publish them all so send us your thoughts. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I had an amazing time at the MPC Fest held at Port Clinton, Ohio. I had never dreamed that I would be able to find a group of such amazing people that also had the same interests as I do. When Bill Yanchick told me about it last year I wanted to go, but due to lack of funding and worried parrents I did not have the chance. This year, three days before the Fest Bill said to me, "While I'm gone I want you to keep an eye on the place." I told him that I wish that I would could go along with him one of these days. He told me to go this year, I had believed that it was too late. Now that it is over and I am aware of the amazing experiences that I can have with a group of people that I have never met before in my life, I know that I will return for many years to come. I really hope that this message can get passed on to everyone that attended MPC Fest VII because, without all of those amazing people I would most likely have been lost and not enjoyed my time in Port Clinton. Just the time that I spent listening to their stories of past wars and conflicts, and being in the presence of many of the men who have given me the many freedoms that I now posess made all the difference. I had never dreamed that I would feel like family with a group of 60 strangers. You all have no idea how much all of your gifts to me mean. I have already placed all of the MPC and other items in albums, holders, and on my bedroom shelves. I plan to get more and more involved in this area of numismatics as long as my mom allows me to leave house more often (haha). My name is Miles Cole. I am sixteen years old and I am now adicted to MPC! Thank you all for everything. "Give it to Miles!!" That was the most fun that I have ever had in my entire life. Miles Dear Editor, I am not sure if other attendees were as disappointed as I was with Fest VII but thought I should speak out to offset all the praise I am sure will be flowing through the Gram. First, I was disappointed that no one challenged me when I arrived (I had my coin ready) and when I challenged a group of Festers, they all had theirs. This Fest was no different than the last one - I was disappointed in not having sufficient funds to buy out the Bourse. Hundreds (thousands) of great MPC and WWII related items for sale. I was disappointed with the "show & tell" and exhibits, since no one had extras for handouts. (Actually I was disappointed that I was not the one finding these treasures - some are one of only a few known, things you would not see anywhere else). I was disappointed that I do not know the right words to say when meeting someone like Valerie May . That was a great pleasure. I was disappointed with the food because I had to eat my pizza during the "Bomb Blast" presentation. (However, if I had not eaten so much, I would have been finished in time). I was disappointed that I did not go further in "March Madness." (However, I think I did answer more questions this time - there was just a lot of people entered, and some of these guys/gals just know too much - so losing is nothing to be ashamed of). The silver medal all participants receive is nice compensation. I was disappointed in being knocked out of the "Texas Hold-em" tournament early (but it was to the eventual runner-up, who hit a pair of Aces on the river card). I was disappointed that I could not win more of the auction lots. (However, the Prices Realized make the consignors (I am one) happy). But my major disappointment was that it did nott last long enough. I did not get to talk to everyone and I know I missed seeing some great items. Most Festers brought items and I saw some very nice Canadian War Saving certificates and related stamps and promotional items (Dan Freeland and Dick Dunn). I was able to talk extensively with a WWII Navy veteran ( Robert Stevenson) about his experiences and his great material on Naval operations. Larry Smulczenski always has great stuff to show and talk about. Jack Hunter had just found some previously unknown validation stickers for foreign bonds. I amm sure that if I knew what was there that I did not see, I would really be disappointed. If you have questions about MPC or WWII you can probably find the answer (and more) at the Fest. It amazes me when I hear comments like "we do not know everything about this" from guys like Fred, Joe, Larry, Harold, Neil, Jim, Carlson, David, just to name a few. I think they do. One thing I was not disappointed with was the accommodations (Camp Leo May Jr) and the service (Holiday Inn Express staff). I wasnot disappointed with all the "freebies" given out but was somewhat disappointed with the pay, in that they all weren’t #1, 2, 7 serial numbers. Regardless Fred, you and your volunteers did a great job. I guess you should sign me up for Fest VIII. To all of you who are staying and going to CPMX, have a great trip.
