From: mpcgram-owner@mail.papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 15, 2006 8:22 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1437 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1437 Wednesday March 15, 2006 Fest report, part 2 by Roger Urce Another topic dealing with the Reichslotteries of 1939 through 1945 was presented by Wendel Wolka, Harold Kroll and Ski. Harold went on the explain that there were thirteen lotteries each consisting of five classes. Each of the five classes was represented by a lottery ticket and all tickets bore the same serial number and were differentiated by different prefix numbers. In order to advance to the next class, purchasers had to win the previous class. These lotteries were used to finance the war. There were two classes of notes that were not printed because of lack of paper and the fifth class of the eleventh lottery was not printed because the paper plant had been destroyed during an Allied bombing raid. The 13th lottery was started just two weeks before war's end in Europe. There is a lot more information yet to be learned and the research is ongoing. Wendell calculated that in order to obtain a complete set of tickets, by lottery, class and vendor over one quarter million tickets were needed. Harold said he would try to complete the set. Our final speaker was Robert Stevenson, an honored guest and new Fester. Bob served on the World War 2 battleship USS Indiana. He spoke in detail and with inredible memory of his experiences in the Pacific and brought with him a cruise book from the Indiana along with some photographs and letters he had sent home. The Indiana participated in many operations prior to the individual landings on a number of Pacific islands, most notably Iwo Jima. Bob, self described as a sailor surrounded by Army guys, was an instant hit and a delight to talk to. He promises to return for Fest VIII and bring additional items for show and tell. Saturday evening saw the final rounds of March madness with questions that proved to be more challenging. (Who knew Lady Laverly's first name was Hazel?) The final four came down to our own Master Sergeant, Howard Daniel against former champ Jim Downey and Al (what kind of animal is a Ba Maw?) Glaser versus current champion Jack Hunter. After some difficult questions and lead changes, it came down to Downey vs. Glaser. It was a tough battle, but Jim Downey prevailed and became the first Fester to repeat as champion. The final event of Saturday night was the annual Texas holdum poker tournament. With a $25 MFC buy in player could vie for the top prize of a $7000 Fest bond. After all the smoke had cleared, Rachael Feller outplayed all the boys and walked away with the bond. On Sunday, the Fest auction was held with over 150 lots offered. A number of lots were donations with proceeds going to the scholarship fund. Items such as savings bonds, OPA tokens, MPC replacement notes and other military items were offered. Two of the more unusual items included two cans of MRE's (Beef and Tuna) currenty in use by Japanese forces in the Middle East and a pair of socks and tee shirt featuring the well known poster likeness of Rosie the Riveter. Both were sold and we could ask Bill Yanchek if the Tuna was sushi grade. There were two AMC specimen books offered, on from Italy and one from Germany, both of which were sold and were the high ticket items in the auction. Overall total sales were $9700 with about $2600 going to the fund. *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: 90 Winston Churchill received the Order of Liberation from what country? Bonus points: who presented the medal? #90 difficulty 3. A vignette of Justice appears on an E A Wright note for what country and in what denomination? #91 difficulty 3. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== The past week really sneaked past. Thanks to Roger, I had it about done, but did not put the finishing touches on it and then a week had passed. We will try to get back on schedule(?). Indeed we have some surprises along that line to be announced later this week. Along with the praise for the Fest that continues to come in are some (anonomous) complaints received via the IG (inspector general). I need to comment on the three that were passed to me in a more or less serious way. You know that I like to do reenactments as part of the overall training plan. Both the MPCFest and summer seminar are full of reenactments--planned and otherwise. So, we have a new reenactment in action. As you can tell from the above comments the troops were grumbling. Great. We have another reenactment. The first two are real easy. Extra nights in the hotel are charged at a rate of $44 per night per room. If two people share the room it is $22 each. I believe this is stated in the Gram leading up to the Fest. The problem comes because it is difficult to predict exactly who will have a roommate and who will not. We try to figure it out but do make mistakes. So, if you were charged $44 for an extra night, you are due a refund. Speak up please. There was a complaint that Fest HQ was not living up to promises made about awards etc. Although I did not actually check on the only specific example, it was mentioned at the Fest. Specifically, we reported in the Gram (according to reports given to me at the Fest) that we had announced that the poker champion would recieve a braclet ala the World Series of Poker. I had indeed thought about that in addition to the generous bond awards ($7000MFC bond for first place). I did not remember reporting it in the Gram, but apparantly did. When I priced the bracelets, I was shocked at the prices and put off a decision until it was too late. When it was pointed out to me at the Fest (in a public forum), I responded that in that case we would indeed honor that (since I wanted to anyway, but had not solved the solvency issue) and will. Fest HQ owes Ray Feller a champion's bracelet. Ah, I have just figured out the solvency issue--if I win the poker tournament every year we can save the bucks! Apparantly some Festers were upset that the canteen officer and his charming assistant were making the Festers sign their chit books in order to purchase beverages. The booklet clearly states that it must be signed to be valid. OK, so that is sort of a bureaucratic answer. Folks, I have to admit that I do not really understand this one. Everyone had two chit books and the opportunity to purchase more. The book from which chits were being torn was being defaced by the removal. If I am missing something here, please tell me. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, Congratulations on the completion of another successful Fest. I hope to able to make it there some year before too long. We have some excellent World War II items in our current World Sale #7, which ends on March 20. Lots can be seen and bids made at the www.lkcaworldpapermoney.com website. The very first lot of the sale is an Austria Allied Military Currency booklet of nine pieces produced in Europe, clear because the booklet does not contain the American-made 25 Schilling. Denominations are the 50 Groschen; 1; 2; 5; 10; 20; 50; 100; and 1000 Schilling (#102b; 103b; 104b; 105; 106; 107; 109; 110a; 111). Such booklets are seldom offered. Other impressive pieces from World War II include LOTS 31 and 32: highly elusive and historic Camp Hay 6 Pence and 1 Shilling (#SB 551b/C 1212b; SB 552a/C 1213a). LOT 396, the Netherlands Ministerie van Oorlog complete three piece set (#M1-M3), including the very difficult 5 Gulden, is an important offering (also see LOT 397). Higher denominations from Denmark's Royal Danish Ministry of War in LOT 175 are not generally offered; we have the complete set. The Dachau 3 Mark in LOT 218 is rarely seen. Finally, LOTS 237-245 contain a splendid selection from Great Britain's British Military Authority and well underrated NAAFI lot (also see propaganda note at end of this section). French NAAFI tokens can be found in LOT 208. Here are still more items contained in World War II Remembered or that are military related: LOT 3, Albania scarce circulating checks; LOTS 44-48, Belgian Army pieces including the elusive 100 Francs; LOT 116, difficult Chinese Military Payment Certificates; LOT 165, Croatia St. Gradiska World War II meal card; LOT 202, attractive France 500 Francs with tricolor; LOT 219, German unlisted Litzmannstadt-Kasinobon 50 Pfennig used at a gambling casino by the Gestapo; LOT 282, tough India camp 1 Rupee from Bangalore; LOT 303, Iraq scarce 1/4 Dinar made in India; Italy, LOTS 318-320 two AMC replacements and a seldom offered set from Campo Concentramento P. G. 59; LOTS 342 and 343, two Libyan Tripolitania groups, now in demand; LOT 481, Surinam 5 Gulden in quality condition for type; LOTS 497-504, United States POW chits and MPC offerings; and LOT 517, mixed chits from Vietnam.
