From: mpcgram-owner@papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Thursday, March 16, 2006 8:45 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1438 retrans with questions (the only changes) ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1438 Thursday March 16, 2006 Fest Report By Al Glaser Well another successful Fest has come and gone. Without a doubt the one numismatic event I look forward to and prepare for more than any other. Yes it is true I made it to the finals of the March madness tournament, no one was more surprised then me. I had faithfully copied the Fest questions throughout the year and printed copies of the tome which I tried to sell for 6MFC at the bourse on Friday. This was met with very limited support and sales were miserable. Since I was one of only a few to read the questions, I had a lot of success in the opening rounds. Once the finals began they decided to use questions fitting a final. I sat there like a deer in the headlights not being able to answer a single question. Some thought I was choking under the pressure, most knew it was they hadn't "dumbed up" the questions enough to give me a chance. As luck would have it, a couple of questions were asked on a subject I had a limited amount of knowledge and guessed a couple right to keep it interesting. However in the end Jim Downey prevailed and should be congratulated on his knowledge of military numismatics and that he is the first repeat champion. On to something I know a little more about, MFC. Saturday a new issue of MFC series 062 was introduced. 062? This was a first at Fest. What happened to 061? Since it is impossible to obtain any records or information on MFC production from headquarters, the most logical assumption is due to the recent passing of original fester May, production of series 061 was halted or destroyed and new designs for series 062 depicting Leo were produced. Also a first were combination denomination notes. Four combination notes were produced using the 062 series. A 5MFC combination note consisted of a 3MFC (long variety) & 2MFC. A 10MFC had the 7MFC & 3MFC values. A 15MFC had the 14MFC & 1MFC, and a 25MFC value combined a 21MFC with a 4MFC. Stand alone denominations were the 1/2MFC, 3MFC (short variety), 10MFC and 35MFC. Those of you who might have received any error notes or unusual anomalies, please make sure you get me the information for listing in the book. On aside note, do yourself a favor and do not get into a Texas hold-um game with the Fellers. Steve the father will tend to slow play you just a little bit giving you a false sense of security while his sweet little daughter Rachel drops the hammer on you. I want to congratulate both of them and thank them for the playing lesson. Thanks to Fred, his staff and the incredible employees at the Holiday Innternment camp I had another fabulous time. As I have said in the past. Any time...Anywhere. Post Fest Field Trips by Roger Urce This year's Sunday field trip was to Camp Perry, located just down the road from Headquarters. During WW2 the camp was used to house German and Italian prisoners. Those of us who made the trip saw the huts, most of which were falling into disrepair, used to house the prisoners and other areas of the camp which housed the guards and adminstrative staff. On display were a number of military vehcles including WW2 era tanks, Viet Nam era helicopters and a cold war missile. A featured display item was a forty and eight box car from France. The car's initial use was to carry either 40 soldiers or 8 horses, but during war it carried other war necessities and was also used to carry prisoners of war to the camps and civilians to concentration camps. The particular car on display was one which contained gifts from the French people presented each of the 48 states in appreciation of the gifts and assistance provided France during the war. On Monday, six of us made the three hour drive to Dayton to visit Wright-Patterson Air Force base and the Air Force museum. On display in three hugh hangers were aircraft from the Wright Brothers flyer to the B2 bomber and ballistic missiles. The aircraft were grouped chronologically and restored by the museum. A two and a half hour tour took us from the beginnings of military flight up to aircraft currently in use in the Middle East. The World War 2 B-17s, B24s and B29s were all there restored to the last detail as were the dive bombers and fighter aircraft from both the Allied and Axis countries. The many wall displays provided information about various conflicts and individuals, aces and medal of honor winners. Displays also included individual items used/worn by pilots including a couple of short snorters. One aircraft of particular note is the actual Cessna 01E "Bird Dog" used in Viet Nam by Larry Smulczenski. *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: How many fractional MPC in a full unit? Many of you know that I believe in this approach to life and leadership. An example that I have encouraged is awarding summer seminar scholarships to best of show winners at the annual ANA convention and other events. Several numismatic organizations do this and I had a part in at least one of them doing it (good for me, grin). I learned a new and good one today. A few of you know that Judy collects love tokens. In spite of generally claiming not to be a numismatist, she has worked on her collection for many years. (She is also a 25+ year ANA member.) Yesterday she talked to Sid Gale the president of the Love Token Society (by the way Sid is a former MPC collector and he had never even heard of MPC Fest, but that is a story for another time). Judy learned that because she exhibited love tokens at the ANA convention that here annual dues in the society are waived! Now that is reinforcing appropriate behavior. I love it. I guess for exhibiting MPC at ANY show or convention we can award a one year subscription to the MPCGram! Ok, that is not so great. Still, they have a wonderful idea there. I am sure that there are ways that we can copy it! ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I got #1434 and now #1437 missing #1435 and #1436?
