From: mpcgram-owner@mail.papermoneyworld.net on behalf of MPCgram [mpcgram@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 22, 2006 7:49 PM To: mpcgram@papermoneyworld.net Subject: MPCGram 1442 ------------------------ / MPC Gram News Letter / ----------------------- =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Vol 7, no 1442 Tuesday March 21, 2006 Clarifications by Joe Boling We have a duke's mixture of items this week. In gram 1431 Ray Czahor says he does not believe the holed Philippine JIM are Red Cross products, then goes on to describe two souvenir booklets that have passed through his hands, but does not say why he does not believe the RC story, nor show any connection between his souvenir booklets and the Red Cross. Ray, tell us more - what's the connection between the booklets and the Red Cross story, and why don't you believe that the RC doughnut dollies were punching holes in JIM? In gram 1436 Roger Urce, in his fest report, talks of Steve Feller's peregrinations in the Channel Islands. Describing the Bank of England notes that were overprinted WITHDRAWN FROM CIRCULATION SEPTEMBER 18TH 1941, he says that "the notes, prior to being surrendered, were counterstamped to avoid their use after the war." Close - but the Germans wanted to use them immediately, and the Channel Islanders thwarted them by overprinting the notes so that they could not be used as foreign exchange DURING the war. (One of the uses of Operation Bernhard notes was to buy war material in the open market, where pounds were more usable than Reichsmarks). Here's a new quiz question - what is Len Buckley (designer of MPC series 692) doing today? He has left the BEP and, among other things, he is a member of the Artistic Infusion Program at the US Mint. He is the designer of the reverse of the Colorado state quarter scheduled for release later in 2006. (Coin World, 6 March 2006, page 2) Finally, I have a quibble with the answer to quiz question 96b in gram 1440 (there were two questions 96). The question was "What numismatic issue was a direct result of the overdraft?" The published reply was "the MPC system." The MPC system is not a numismatic issue. The issue that was directly stimulated by the overdraft was the use of AMC yen series 100-A as restricted-use currency in the Pacific theater. Had that experiment failed, we would not have had any MPC at all. However, the experiment having succeeded beyond expectations, the release of series 461 was accelerated in Europe and a couple of weeks later series 461 was extended to the Pacific, replacing the series 100-A yen notes. I told myself when the question was published that this point was going to be too subtle for MPC collectors - and I was right. [See editorial for editors comments.] The Master Sergeant Finally Attended a Fest! by The Master Sergeant Daniel I am not much of a winter person and usually head for warmer climates during that part of the year. The weather forecast had snow and sleet forecasted for my original travel day to Port Clinton, Ohio, so I departed a day earlier. Yes, I finally attended one of them. I drove from my wife's condo near the DC Beltway to I-270 to I-70 and then to I-76 and I-80/90. I stopped only for fuel and coffee and made it to Port Clinton in seven hours. When I got off the Interstate, I saw signs for Ottawa and thought I had gone too far and into Canada! And I swear I saw a sign for the Northwest Territories too. The Holiday Inn Express's manager, Kim, checked me in and I had a nice suite to myself. Kim and her staff really went overboard in taking care of us before, during and after the Fest!! I was going to share the suite with my wife but she decided to work instead of taking a trip with me to a meeting of mostly former military types. She always makes good decisions! There were some OLD festers already there and we ate dinner at the Jolly Roger that night. The next day, we went to a warehouse and stuffed our vehicles with whatever was needed for the Fest. It was not a lot of work, but I did feel the wind coming off of Lake Erie. Brrrrrrrr! And we were not paid for our work in MFC! I knew then things were not going to go well for me. There was a bourse the next day and I found a few pieces to buy. Amazing! And David Seeyle and Roger Urce gave me a bag/envelope of notes to give to the kids at the ANA Conventions in the name of the IBNS and Gramsters. Over the next couple of days were too many events to describe all of them, except that I finished in the Final Four in the March Madness! Another amazing event!!! And another significant event was my adding my $100 to the pot in an auction of Fred's beard being shaved off. Over $500 went into the scholarship fund. Excellent! I also flirted with The Boss a couple of times but she did not know I was flirting with her! I must be getting old! I stayed a day past the Fest and a bunch of us went to Mel's for dinner. Then I drove to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to visit an old VN War buddy, and an Uncle and Aunt on my way to Chicago. The Fest was a great time, and I even enjoyed being around Fred for a few days in a row. But what I did not realize was that I was going to live with him and Joe Boling at the Chicago CPMX too! If you want to see a picture of a nearly naked and hairy Fred sitting in a chair and working on his emails, send me an email. I am still trying to recover from that last experience! *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: What printer or printers produced Special Army Currency? Question 98, difficulty 3. Yesterday's Question: replacments were indicated by serial letter G and H for what issues? Answer: see comments below Comments from the field: Bill Myers Jack Hunter and Larry Gibbs all correctly answered that 1948 Special Army Currency uses the letter G (G-G) as replacements and that Allied military yen use H (H-A or is it A-H?--a bonus questio.) I a phone conversation on the matter (I was going to say issue), Joe and I agreed that probably the BEST answer was OMGUS coupons as described by Jim Downey on Monday. ========================================== Editorial ========================================== I liked Joe's comments on the question about the issue generated by the overdraft in Germany. Certainly the issue (or reissue, or issuance of A yen as military scrip) of A yen was generated by the overdraft. However the issue that was created as a result of the overdraft was MPC or more specifically and possibly more correctly Series 461 MPC. The curx of the difference of interpretation between Joe and me seems to be in the use of the word issue which is both a noun and a verb. Here is exactly how the question was stated: What numismatic issue was a direct result of the overdraft? To me this seems to be asking for a noun, but I would love to hear from some gramarians out there on this, er, issue. Of course, I suspect that any gramarians who might have subscribed to the Gram have probably departed screaming long before now. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, For those who are considering taking the week-long PM counterfeit detection seminar in CS in July, it's time to get your registrations in.
