As I stated earlier I was stationed at Clark AB from 1963 to 1965. I was quite familiar with the Red Cross and their primary function at that time. There were only two or three people in the Red Cross office and they were quite busy providing a conduit between family members in the CONUS and military members stationed at Clark on emergency matters. In fact, commanders would not approve a leave request for a member during their tour to go back to CONUS unless the Red Cross would verify it was an emergency situation. Given the size of the military force at Clark, the Red Cross was kept quite busy in this role and it is my opinion that they wouldn't have time punching holes in JIM and designing and preparing souvenir booklets. The booklets I have seen one came from Filipinos while I was there and the other from a US collection and I believe was prepared immediately after the War. Paul Garner in Gram 1443 has a more likely scenario on how/why holes were punched in JIM. *********************************************************** Championship Question Corner Question: US Naval officer Captain Miles arranged for counterfeit notes of what country? Answer: see below Comments from the field: Bill Myers wrote: Question 99: Since 1380 Faroe Islands were a posession of Denmark. They became a protectorate of Great Britain 4 APR 1941 and now are autonomous in local matters and represented in the Danish parliament. Question 100: Ukraine notes were printed by Reichsdruckerei, Berlin. [Bill threw me for a little look with the autonomous comment. Just what does it mean. I was looking for an answer like the Faroe Islands (future travel destination of Ski I think) are part of Denmark. Instead I get this autonomous comment and was not sure that I was up to date. Well, it seems that we are both right. This is what I found on the internet: Since 1948, the Faroe Islands have been a selfgoverning region of the Kingdom of Denmark. It has its own parliament and its own flag. It is not, however, a member of the European Union and all trade is governed by special treaties.--Ed] ========================================== Editorial ========================================== On Thursday the Boss and I made the long trek to Oak Harbor to visit the local coin shop. Harold and Faye Rice have a little shop in their converted garage. The three biggest towns in the in the county are (in order (from the top)) Port Clinton, Oak Harbor, and Elmore. As far as I know the only coin shops ever to operate in the county were in Oak Harbor. The one before the Rice shop was a nice place, but it did not last long. In many ways the shop is a throw back to the first shops that I visited in the 1960s. It does not have chairs and a coffee pot, but it does have plenty of circulated coins for collectors filling sets. It has a little paper money and even a few MPC! What it had yesterday that really surprised me was customers! Not only were there six customers in the shop (including Judy and me), but a few of them departed and were replaced by others so that in the 45 or so minutes that I was there, I think that eight or nine customers were there. Most of them bought a little something. I could not find anything to buy but but Judy bought two love tokens for her collection. Both of then are actually quite interesting. My statement that I could not find anything to buy is not quite correct. Harold has two Port Clinton national bank notes in his inventory for sale. He has had them for a long time. The problem is that he will not quote me a price. I believe that if others ask, he will give them a price--but not me. You see, I not only have a few Oak Harbor nationals that he wants (he has none!), but I even have a duplicate and he figures that the best way to get it from me releates to the two PCs that he has. Fortunately, I do not need either of them for my PC type collection (I do need them for my PC serial number collection). I have told him that if he can find me anything for my country type collection that we can trade, but that does not make him very happy. ========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Greetings Editor, Are your horizons open to adding "pogs" to mpcgramvillagers as we listed in our latest "Coins and Currency of the Mideast"????????? Cheers, Colin Dear Colin, I am not sure what your question is. Pogs are most certainly part of the military money story and are being hotly collected. My vision is that pogs likely will be listed in the next MPC book but not in the WWII book. Opinions are welcome.
